Chery-JLR have revived the Freelander nameplate, which will now be a brand of its own, spawning multiple models. The first model under the Freelander family of SUVs was previewed by the Concept 97. The concept features an overall boxy silhouette that resembles the Defender. At the front, the bonnet, closed-off grille, and bumper get a dual-tone paint job. The grille also gets 'Freelander' branding, and the LED headlamps' design mirrors older Freelander models, with detailing from the original models' C-pillar glasshouse. The sides feature smooth and clean surfaces, protruding wheel arches finished in black, a side step, and dual-tone alloy wheel designs. The C-pillar's glasshouse design pays homage to the original Freelander. Like the front-end, the tailgate and rear bumper also get a two-tone finish and similar detailing for the LED tail-lamps as the headlights. There are also rear-hinged doors and roof rails. The interior adopts a blue and white colour scheme, and the dash gets an end-to-end display along with a free-floating infotainment screen. While there are wraparound seats at the back, the production version is expected to arrive as a six-seater with captain chairs for the second row. The first model from the Freelander lineup will launch in the latter half of this year, with six additional models to arrive in the next five years. Each model will offer EV, PHEV and range-extender hybrid powertrain options.
