I’m a first-time car buyer working in sales, so mileage and low maintenance are important. I drive ≈800 km/month (half city, half highway) and need space for weekend trips with a family of five. My budget is ₹15 lakh on-road and I prefer better ground clearance due to bad roads and potholes. Which automatic car should I buy?

You can consider a Maruti Brezza for its efficient engine and spacious cabin. Its suspension feels well-suited to tackle bad roads. The turbo petrol offerings at this price point are very sensitive to driving style, hence they might not be as fuel-efficient. Out of the turbo options, an XUV3XO 1.2 Turbo MPFI with a 6-speed torque converter automatic is a very good option.

We are a family of four, and my budget is up to Rs. 10 lakh. I am looking for a car that is safe, fun to drive, fuel-efficient, and stable on highways. It should also be comfortable for three passengers in the rear seat, have a good sound system, effective air conditioning, and sufficient boot space. The maintenance and service network should also be hassle-free. My running is usually at weekends, 60% city and 40% rural. I prefer a petrol manual only. Is there any ideal family car which fits into my requirements, or do I need to stretch my budget a bit, say by 1-2 lakhs, to get a car suiting my requirements? Please suggest. I am also open to used car options.

The Kia Syros HTK (base) Turbo-Petrol MT variant is an excellent family car that seems to meet your requirements of comfort, highway stability and good air-conditioning. Additionally, this car is surprisingly spacious despite being under four metres in length. Alternatively, you could consider the new Hyundai Venue HX2 Turbo-petrol MT or Mahindra XUV 3XO RevX M. Both of which are good options, and should be in the Rs 10 lakh on-road price. If you're keen to explore used options, we'd recommend getting the newest possible example covered by factory warranty for added peace of mind. You could consider a Honda City or Maruti Grand Vitara (or Toyota Hybrid), which are safe, sensible options that should be priced at around Rs 10 lakh.

We are a family of four, and my budget is a maximum of Rs 10 lakh. I am looking for a petrol manual car. My requirements are that the car should be fun to drive, comfortable for three passengers at the rear, have a good sound system, strong air conditioning, and sufficient boot space. Mileage and service network are also important. My usage will be around 60% city and 40% rural driving. Is there an ideal family car that meets all these requirements, or will I have to compromise because of my budget? Also, if I stretch my budget by Rs 1-2 lakh, would there be a better option? I am also open to second-hand cars.

With 60% city and 40% rougher rural runs, a petrol manual under Rs 10 lakh that covers space, comfort, AC and running costs best is the Maruti Suzuki Fronx 1.2 manual in a mid variant. It rides higher than a regular small car, so bad roads and speed breakers are easy. The back seat is wide enough for three for most trips, the AC is strong, the boot is decent for a family of four, and you get Maruti’s big service network and easy mileage. It is light and easy to drive in traffic, yet steady at highway speeds. The trade-offs: the engine is smooth but not very exciting when fully loaded, and the audio system in lower trims is just okay.If you can stretch by Rs 1-2 lakh, the Maruti Suzuki Brezza manual fits your brief even better with a roomier back seat, tougher ride for rural roads, and strong AC.In the used market, you should be able to find a 5-6 year old Hyundai Creta or Kia Seltos with the 1.5 NA petrol manual combo from a trusted source like Spinny. Overall, the Fronx meets your needs without big compromises; the Brezza is the nicer step-up if you stretch.
