Should safety rating a major consideration for buying a car? I drive a 5 star rated car and I feel safe knowing the car I drive is sturdy and well built. Is it really safe or 5 star rating keeps my mind at peace. I feel it is not emphasized enough. Let's take Creta for example. It is the single most dominant mid size SUVs for a decade now but safety is not there as compared to seltos, Victoris, Elevate, Kushaq or Taigun. Creta still dominates. I understand it is going through a major facelift next year but why wait a decade and still do not have a 5 star rating, not even 4. Low safety rating is then but never tested is not an option. Shouldnt it be made mandatory? What are your thoughts? Thanks in advance.

While safety rating should be a consideration, whether it is major or not, depends... Safety rating is a measure of passive safety measures of the car. There are also active safety measures in the equipment. For example - Windshield defogger & wiper is an active safety feature, but a 5-star rated car can have a highly affordable variant that misses out on these features and consumers are drawn to it, since it is more affordable. Similarly, the number of parking sensors in the car or adjustable headrests. Also, one of my pet peeves is that a 5-star rated car is good, but it is of no use, if you do not use seat belts or drive on the wrong side.

@navalk24 I agree with you on following the rules and active safety. Safety is a wide topic and the safety aspects you mentioned is not available on the entry, mid variants. End of the day we need value for money. Everyone cannot afford top end models. At least build quality do not vary across variants. So we have to compromise/ forego the features enabling safety.

@kochkarun I agree that safety rating should be an important part of the buying decision. A 5-star rating doesn't mean the car is accident-proof - it means it has shown good occupant protection in crash tests. So when choosing between similar cars, I would definitely prefer one with a proven crash-test rating over one where the safety performance is still untested.

The Creta diesel uses a passive DPF system that regenerates naturally at highway speeds, and your usage pattern already includes the kind of driving that keeps the system healthy. The idea that a diesel needs to be driven daily is a myth; what matters is that the car gets regular runs at steady speeds, which your highway usage already provides. Diesel maintenance is not inherently difficult, but it is slightly more expensive than petrol. The key is to follow the service schedule and use good quality fuel. The petrol turbo is a good engine, but for your running and usage pattern, the diesel makes more sense. The only reason to avoid diesel would be if your usage was predominantly short city runs, which is not the case here. The Creta diesel is a solid upgrade from the Aura and will serve you well on Bangalore highways.

I am 34 years old and I currently own a Honda Amaze. I am planning to get a new car. My annual running is around 7000 km and 85% of the running is out of Mumbai. I wanted a sedan but that is not mandatory. I want to buy a car that I plan to keep for the next 10 years. I need a safe automatic car that has front ventilated seats with good after sales support. I currently own a Jeep Compass and want to get an additional car for my father, with good reliability, unlike the Jeep. The Skoda Slavia and Volkswagen Virtus are both excellent to drive, but the 1.0 TSI engine can feel a bit laggy at low speeds, and the 1.5 TSI is overkill for this kind of usage. The Nissan Tekton is a good value proposition, but engines are not responsive at low speeds and Nissan's service network is not as strong as Honda's, which matters more for a low-running, long-term ownership scenario. The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder is a solid option if you specifically want an SUV, but the hybrid premium does not make financial sense at this running, and the naturally aspirated petrol is not as refined as the City's engine. Go for the Kia Seltos HTX(A) DCT. At 15,000 km a year with a mix of city and highway driving, the Seltos is the more sensible choice. This Kia car is easier to drive in the city, more efficient and still comfortable on long trips. The DCT gearbox is quick but a bit jerky in traffic, but the car feels premium inside, which you already like. The Tata Safari has great road presence and more space, but this Tata car is a much bigger car to live with every day and does not feel as well-finished inside. The Seltos is the better all-rounder for your usage.
