I currently drive a Hyundai Xcent petrol and travel about 400-500 km every week. My budget is ₹25-30 lakh. Should I go for the Tata Sierra EV or wait for the Tata Avinya?

With a usage of 400-500km a week, we would recommend sticking with a petrol, diesel or hybrid vehicle for the moment.

The Tata Avinya range of EVs is still at least two years away, so there's plenty of time to consider a new car in between. Moreover, Tata is positioning the Avinya brand as a premium offering, so prices for its models will likely be north of Rs 30 lakh when it is launched.

In the meantime, the Tata Sierra is a good option, with loads of space and comfort, and a strong features list. Its engines are not the strongest or most exciting, and neither is the handling, but its standout design is sure to turn heads.

I travel 40 km per day in Hyderabad city traffic. I want to buy an SUV within my budget. I currently drive a Tata Harrier manual and now want an automatic SUV with good fuel efficiency.

With 40km a day in Hyderabad traffic, your priority should be a comfortable automatic with good fuel efficiency and low running costs. Since you are coming from a Harrier manual, you are already used to a large SUV, but in city traffic, a smaller, more efficient automatic will make a bigger difference to your daily experience. The best option for your usage is the Maruti Suzuki Victoris Hybrid automatic. The hybrid system delivers excellent fuel efficiency in stop-start traffic, and the automatic gearbox is smooth and stress-free. It is also a reliable, low-maintenance car with a strong service network, which is important for long-term ownership. The only drawback is that it is not as big as the Harrier, but for city use, it is the more sensible choice. The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara also offer the same powertrain if you prefer the look of those. If you want something a bit more premium and are willing to compromise slightly on fuel efficiency, the Kia Seltos IVT automatic is a good alternative. It is more spacious and feels more upmarket, but it will not match the Maruti Suzuki Victoris Hybrid on fuel economy in city traffic.Overall, the Victoris Hybrid automatic is the best fit for your usage and budget. It will make your daily commute easier, cheaper and more comfortable.

We are a family of two, and 95% of the time, the car will be used by just the two of us. We take trips with our extended family of 7 once or twice a year. My driving is split 50:50 between city and highway, and I also do leisure tours of at least 800 km every month as I enjoy driving and travelling. My overall monthly usage is between 2,500 and 3,000 km. My priorities are a car that is fun to drive, loaded with features, has low maintenance costs, makes a statement, is comfortable, and is practical for daily use. My budget is Rs. 27 lakh, and I have shortlisted the Sierra EV AWD and the XEV 9S Pack Two with the 79 kWh battery. Which one would you recommend?

Given your usage pattern of 2,500-3,000 km per month, with a 50:50 city-highway split and a strong touring habit, the Mahindra XEV 9S Pack 2 is the better fit. The larger 79kWh battery gives you a more comfortable real-world range buffer for your 800 km leisure trips, reducing charging anxiety. This Mahindra car also offers a third-row seat, which will come in handy when you travel with your extended family. The Tata Sierra EV AWD is more stylish and eye-catching, and it is thrillingly quick too. The AWD system adds an extra level of safety in poor weather and also gives the Sierra a better off-road capability. This Tata car also packs in plenty of cool features and has a strong wow factor. However, its two-row seating layout will not work for you when you have seven passengers.Go for the XEV 9S, as it is the more practical and well-rounded choice for your requirements.
