2024 saw a big change for the Suzuki Access in terms of its chassis, engine internals and features, and it's no secret that the company will be trickling these improvements to its other scooters, the Avenis and the Burgman Street duo, in the foreseeable future.

However, there's no confirmation on when these updated Suzuki scooters will launch, so if you are thinking of buying a Burgman Street, you should wait until it launches. Alternatively, you could go ahead and buy the Access, which is a sorted scooter, is less expensive to purchase compared to the Burgman and was also recently updated with single-channel ABS, making it a good purchase.

Hi, I currently own a Hero Duet BS3 model. My current weekly running is around 80 km, most of which is within the city. Due to the current petrol prices, my weekly fuel bill is around Rs 400. Would it be financially viable for me to switch to an electric scooter given my usage?

From what you have told us, it seems that your Hero Duet's engine is consuming an unusually large amount of fuel for the distance you are covering. Our first suggestion would be to get it serviced properly and see if this changes anything. If it doesn't, given your low weekly run, getting a new petrol scooter like a Jupiter, Access or Activa would make more sense than switching to a more expensive electric bike. The high initial cost you shell out for the e-scooter will take years to recoup with your limited use. Nevertheless, if your next vehicle must be an EV, then choose from proven brands like TVS, Bajaj, Ather and Hero.

We would like to buy a scooter for a female member of our family. She has been using an Activa for many years, and it is still running well. However, I’m not very happy with its safety and would like to upgrade to a better and safer scooter. I’m currently considering the Ather Apex, while she has a slight preference for the Vespa. However, I’m not sure about Vespa’s reliability. The nearest Vespa service centre is around 10 km away. Would it be possible to get a Vespa serviced and maintained by a local mechanic? Please advise which scooters we should consider. Our budget is around Rs 2-3 lakh.

Since the person you are shopping for prefers a neo-retro styled scooter, consider options like the Yamaha Fascino and Suzuki Access. Both have appealing designs and are frugal, reliable, comfortable and lightweight machines which should serve you well. The Fascino is one of the lightest ICE scooters on sale and if ease of use is a top priority, then the Yamaha edges ahead. We'd recommend you go take a test ride of both before making your decision. Coming to the Ather 450 Apex, it will surely offer a step up in terms of performance and features but in terms of practicality and comfort, you might be losing some ground here. Also, its sharp brakes are prone to locking up, which isn't ideal. And no, a roadside mechanic cannot repair a cutting-edge electric scooter, you have to go to the authorised service centres for that. Moving on to the Vespa, Piaggio's scooters are good to ride but their purchase and ownership costs are significantly higher than the mainstream brands. If you are okay with this, then you may go ahead with your purchase.

We'd advise you to choose between the TVS iQube and River Indie because both are trustworthy, practical and comfortable EVs. While both will feel quite adept at tackling city roads, on the highway, the Indie will offer better stability owing to its larger 14-in wheels and fatter tyres. There's not much wrong with the Yamaha EC-06 (unsurprisingly, since it is effectively a dressed-up and pricier River Indie) but it costs quite a bit more than the River. You also have a substantially smaller boot and a very slow 450W charger on the Yamaha, both of which will make their presence felt in day-to-day scenarios. Take a test ride of the iQube and Indie and depending on which one you like more, make your decision.

Hi, I have been riding TVS Jupiter since 2017 and my usage is around 20 km but now, when I took it for service, I came to know that the chassis of the bike has rusted and there are cracks in it. Since I am unable to find a spare, I want to change it. Should I go for electric or petrol scooter? If I choose the electric scooter, will the rusting problem still persist in the chassis. I’m confused between the Honda CB350 H’ness and the Royal Enfield Hunter 350. I liked the refined engine and comfortable riding position of the CB350, while I liked the Hunter’s looks, lightweight nature, and ease of manoeuvring. My daily travel is around 40 km, mostly in traffic, with speeds rarely crossing 80 kmph. I plan to use the bike primarily for daily commuting. Which one should I go for? Also, would using an inclined handlebar riser on the Hunter 350 improve its riding comfort?

The Honda CB350 would make more sense for your needs because you spend most of your time in city traffic where comfort and refinement are paramount. While this Honda bike is a slightly larger machine than the Royal Enfield Hunter (both weigh the same 181kg), after a brief acclimatization period, you will get used to it. While a set of handlebar risers can improve your seating posture on the Hunter, you will lose some feedback and control from the front end and you will also need to arrange for longer cables and hoses to accommodate this change.
