•7wHello. My present car is a petrol Ritz. I want to buy a new car, preferably the Hyundai Venue. I want a lot of information regarding the DCT, how it performs in bumper-to-bumper traffic, and what the do’s and dont’s are while driving a DCT. I am a bit confused and even scared after seeing a few videos on YouTube where they mention that DCTs get heated up and may even lead to gearbox failure in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

A DCT gearbox, or Dual Clutch Transmission, as the name suggests, has two clutches, one for odd gears and one for even gears. The benefit of this setup is very fast gearshifts because one of the two clutches is always engaged. DCTs also have good fuel efficiency, as, unlike torque converter or CVT automatics, transmission losses are lower.
However, while DCTs are great for enthusiasts and sporty driving thanks to their quick shifts, they struggle in stop-and-go, bumper-to-bumper traffic, where they feel a bit jerky at low speeds and hesitant when crawling slowly.
As far as reliability goes, because DCTs are prone to overheating, there is sufficient thermal protection built in. If the DCT gets too hot, the ECU will adjust the shift logic or limit performance until the gearbox cools down. Nowadays, complete gearbox failure is rare in modern cars such as the Venue. So don’t worry, the problems that are out there on social media are more anecdotal than widespread in real-world ownership.
Some tips for getting the best life out of a DCT are;
- Stay in D mode for normal driving.
- Shift to neutral (N) if you’re stationary for a long, long time (like waiting at a crossing for minutes), which reduces heat.
- Maintain service intervals.
- Be gentle with the throttle in slow-moving traffic.
- Always use factory-recommended gearbox oil and have periodic transmission checks.
