I am planning to buy a new SUV. My daily commute is around 50km in Mumbai city with occasional intercity trips on the highway. Should I go with a diesel or a petrol engine? I have shortlisted the Mahindra XUV 7XO 7L Automatic Diesel. Which is the other option in a similar range?

Go for the Mahindra XUV 7XO diesel automatic. With your 50 km daily running and occasional highway trips, diesel makes good sense, as you will benefit from better efficiency over time and strong low-speed torque, which helps in city traffic. The automatic is smooth enough for everyday use, and the car feels stable and comfortable on the highway, with ample space for family and luggage. Mahindra’s service network in Mumbai is also well established, which adds to peace of mind.
Do keep in mind that modern diesels use a DPF system, which can require occasional cleaning runs if the car is driven only in slow traffic. Your highway trips should naturally take care of this, but if a regeneration message appears, a steady 15-20 minute drive will clear it. Also, the third row is best suited for occasional use, so it is worth checking comfort if you plan to use all seven seats regularly.
If you want a close alternative, the Tata Safari diesel automatic offers a more comfortable and spacious third row, making it more suitable for frequent family use. If you prefer to avoid diesel altogether and want the smoothest city experience, a strong hybrid like the Toyota Innova HyCross is worth considering, though it comes at a higher price.

Is the Toyota Innova Crysta worth considering for my requirements? I will mainly use the car only for highway drives. Also, are there any better options available in the same price range?

The Innova Crysta is a good choice for purely highway use. It shines on long runs: the diesel pulls strongly without effort, it stays steady at speed, and the ride keeps bad patches in check so your family stays comfortable. The seats are wide and supportive, and Toyota’s track record and service reach make cross-country trips worry-free.Know the trade-offs. The cabin feels a bit old next to newer rivals, and an automatic is no longer on offer, which can become tiring on longer drives. If you want an easy automatic, look at the Mahindra XUV 7XO. It rides better and feels smoother and more powerful, though the third row is a bit tight for adults. If you are open to petrol power, then the Innova Hycross is a better choice than the Crysta in terms of comfort, safety and ease of use.For pure highway runs, the Innova Crysta is still a solid choice.

I am looking for a quick-accelerating car in the Rs 25-35 lakh range, preferably a diesel automatic. What should I buy?

For strong acceleration with a diesel automatic in this budget, the Mahindra XUV 7XO diesel automatic is the best match. It fits your brief because its diesel engine has strong pull right from low speeds, so gaps open up fast, and highway overtakes need just a light press of the throttle. The automatic is smooth in slow traffic and settles into low revs on the highway, which keeps the drive easy. It also gives you the most shove among diesel automatics in this price range, so it feels quicker than rivals when you need it.Know the trade-offs: it is a big, tall car, so tight city lanes and small parking spots need extra care. Overall, for your requirement of quick pickup with a diesel automatic, the XUV 7XO stands out as the strongest option in this segment.

Hi, currently I am using XUV500 W10 2015 model. Now I have booked Innova Crysta for my future of 10 to 12 years, so please suggest whether I should take the Innova Crysta or try the 7XO. Kindly advise.

The Toyota Innova Crysta is a solid choice if your priority is keeping the car for 10 to 12 years, because long-term durability and reliability are exactly where it continues to make a strong case. If your ownership lens is pure peace of mind and dependable family transport, few cars have the Crysta’s reputation. That said, if you are coming from an XUV500 W10, the XUV 7XO will feel far more familiar and also like a much more meaningful upgrade. It will feel easier to drive than the Crysta, especially in the city, offers far more modern tech and features, stronger performance, and a noticeably more premium cabin experience. The ride and handling are also a clear step up from your old XUV500, while still retaining that big SUV feel you are used to. The availability of an automatic is another big plus, something the Crysta simply does not offer. The Crysta’s downside is that while it remains dependable, it is already an ageing product and does not feel nearly as modern or effortless to live with day to day, particularly because of the heavier steering and more old-school driving experience.

Is it worth considering buying an Audi in India at the moment over rivals like Mercedes-Benz or BMW? Could you please explain whether there are any risks associated with purchasing an Audi currently?

From a pure product perspective, Audi’s cars like the A4, Q3 and the Q7 remain genuinely strong. Cabin quality is excellent, refinement is top-notch, quattro-equipped models are hugely capable, and the overall ownership experience can be perfectly satisfying. Where Mercedes and BMW currently have the edge is brand momentum, product freshness and showroom pull. Mercedes has the broadest luxury portfolio, while BMW arguably has the more engaging cars to drive in several segments. Audi, by comparison, has felt quieter in recent years, with fewer headline launches and slightly less buzz.Audi India remains committed, and service support for existing owners is not a concern in the way people sometimes fear.

My wife and I earn around ₹4.5 lakh per month. We are planning to buy our first car, and we prefer the EMI to be around ₹15,000-₹20,000. What car would you suggest we should buy?

It really depends on how much down payment you are comfortable putting in, because your EMI target of Rs 15,000 to 20,000 can get you very different cars depending on the loan tenure and upfront payment. That said, for a first car that is easy to drive, safe, comfortable and still feels special, one of the strongest picks today is the Skoda Kylaq Signature automatic. Skoda’s official pricing puts the Signature automatic in a range where, with roughly Rs 2.3 down payment and a 7 year loan, your EMI can sit broadly in your target bracket. The turbo petrol engine feels punchy without being intimidating, the torque converter automatic is smooth and fuss free, and the size is just right for a first time buyer. If you want to spend less and prioritise maximum ease of use, the Hyundai i20 IVT is another excellent first car. It is easier to drive than most SUVs, the IVT automatic is extremely smooth in traffic, and ownership is straightforward. You give up the higher seating position of an SUV, but for urban use, it is arguably an even easier first car.

I currently drive a petrol Baleno that is about 8 years old. My monthly running has increased to around 2,500-3,000km. Should I install a CNG kit or look for a used BS6 diesel car? My maximum budget is Rs 6 lakh.

At your kind of running, moving away from petrol does make financial sense, but we would first look at how that 2,500 to 3,000 km a month is split between city and highway use.If a large chunk of it is on a highway, a well-maintained used BS6 diesel can make sense because the fuel savings will be meaningful, and the usage pattern suits modern diesel engines far better. If, however, this mileage is mostly city traffic, we would avoid a BS6 diesel because DPF-related issues can become a headache with repeated stop-and-go use.Installing an authorised aftermarket CNG kit on your Maruti Baleno is absolutely legal, provided it is a government-approved kit, fitted by an authorised installer and the RC and insurance are updated accordingly. Financially, this is the lower-risk route if your Baleno is otherwise mechanically healthy, because you will recover the conversion cost relatively quickly with your kind of running. The trade-off is some loss of boot space and a drop in performance.
