Hi, I am facing a persistent gear-shifting issue with my Mahindra XUV 3XO manual transmission, specifically when shifting between 1st and 2nd gear. When shifting between 1st and 2nd, both while upshifting and downshifting, the gear lever feels momentarily stuck or hitched before moving into place. I can also feel a slight downward movement or pull from the base of the gear shifter inside the cabin when shifting from 1st to 2nd. All higher gears, from 3rd to 6th, shift smoothly without any resistance. During the first service, the service centre adjusted the shift cables under the bonnet, but the problem has persisted. I am now taking the car in for its 20,000km service. What could be causing this issue, and what should I specifically ask the service advisor to inspect?

The issue you are describing on your Mahindra XUV 3XO manual, a momentary hitch or resistance when shifting between 1st and 2nd, while other shifts are fine, does seem to indicate a cable issue, rather than a clutch or gearbox-wide issue. Since the problem has not gone away with the cable adjustment, ask the center to replace the cables and associated shift-gate mechanisms like the bushes. Only accept the car if the problem is entirely cured. Your car is under warranty, so you should get any issues resolved early; left unattended, they could worsen.Ask the service center to also check the gearbox mounting, and if the issue persists after all this, ask them to inspect the 1st-2nd gear synchroniser. But this would mean a larger job involving opening of the gearbox. The key though is to focus the diagnosis and cure the issue soon rather than just repeated cable adjustments.

Fevikwik is a cyanoacrylate adhesive, and once it bonds to plastic, it can be very difficult to remove without damaging the surface. The most important thing is to avoid using strong solvents like acetone or nail polish remover, as these can permanently damage the dashboard material.The safest approach is to try to soften the glue rather than dissolve it. Start by soaking a soft cloth in warm, soapy water and placing it over the stain for 10-15 minutes. This can sometimes help loosen the bond slightly. Then, very gently try to lift the edge of the glue with a fingernail or a plastic card. Do not scrape aggressively, as this will damage the dashboard.If that does not work, you can try a small amount of petroleum jelly (Vaseline) or a few drops of cooking oil on a cotton bud, gently rubbing the glue in a circular motion. Wipe clean with a damp cloth afterwards. This can sometimes help break down the glue without harming the plastic.If the stain is in a very visible area and none of these methods work, it may be worth consulting a professional detailer. They have access to specialist products and techniques that are safer for automotive plastics.The key is to be patient and gentle. Aggressive solvents or scraping will do more harm than good.

I am planning to buy a new car under 20-25 lakh for the next ten years. The Seltos DCT GTX+ and Kushaq 1.5 DSG Monte Carlo are both excellent cars, but their turbo-petrol engines and dual-clutch gearboxes are not the most efficient or the most stress-free choices for predominantly short city runs. The DCT/DSG gearboxes are at their best on open roads, and in stop-start city traffic they can feel a bit jerky and are not as smooth or as durable as a torque converter automatic over the long term.The Seltos hybrid is worth waiting for if you are not in a hurry. It is expected to be priced roughly Rs. 2-3 lakh above the equivalent petrol variant, and for your usage pattern it will make more sense than the turbo-petrol DCT. Hybrids deliver their biggest efficiency gains in city driving, and over a 10-year ownership period the fuel savings and smoother driving experience will more than justify the premium.If you want to buy now, the Kia Seltos IVT (naturally aspirated petrol with CVT) is the better choice for your usage. It is smooth, reliable and well suited to city driving, and you will not be paying a premium for performance you will rarely use. The Skoda Kushaq 1.0 TSI with the torque converter automatic is another good option if you prefer a more engaging driving experience, but the Seltos IVT is the more refined and hassle-free choice.EVs are not the right fit for you at the moment given your concerns about charging infrastructure and your low daily running. The savings are not significant enough to justify the compromises.

I’m planning to buy my first car and would appreciate some suggestions. My budget is around Rs. 13-15 lakh ex-showroom, and I’m planning to register the car under the BH series. Safety is my top priority, so I strongly prefer a car with a 5-star safety rating, preferably from Global NCAP. An automatic transmission is a must. The car will mainly be used for weekend family trips and highway drives rather than daily commuting. Since it will be a family car, I’d prefer something that looks classy and elegant while offering good comfort. A premium-looking interior would be a plus, and features such as leather/leatherette upholstery and ventilated seats would be nice to have, but they aren't deal-breakers. At the same time, I don’t want a car that is purely comfort-oriented. I enjoy driving, so I’d like something with a good engine, enjoyable handling, and a fun-to-drive character. Good rear-seat comfort and reasonable luggage space for family trips would also be appreciated.

Based on your requirements, the Skoda Kushaq 1.0 TSI automatic is the recommendation. It strikes the right balance between safety, driving enjoyment and family usability. The 1.0 TSI engine is strong, the handling is engaging, and the car feels solid and confidence-inspiring on the highway. If you prefer the look of the VW Taigun, it offers largely the same experience as the Kushaq.
