Hello, I have shortlisted the Creta for purchase. Could you please help me understand if I can confidently buy the DCT gearbox, since there were many issues reported back in 2019? Has Hyundai updated the latest DCT mechanism, as we are not hearing about failures recently? Please suggest.

DCTs do have a reputation, largely because of the older Volkswagen units, which had quite a few failures in India. The Hyundai Creta DCT is generally more reliable. While Hyundai has not changed the gearbox itself, with the switch from the older 1.4-litre engine to the 1.5-litre unit, there have been calibration changes that have improved creep behaviour and thus the longevity of the gearbox.
However, if you are still concerned about the DCT and your drive is mostly in the city in traffic, opt for the Creta 1.5 petrol with the CVT gearbox. It does not make as much power as the turbocharged unit, but for most scenarios, it does just fine and is a very smooth gearbox to drive.

I have a 2015 manual diesel Creta SX(O) model for the past 10 years. Planning to buy an automatic car. Family of two, and I am 65. Only Bangalore city driving, averaging 100 km per month. What car similar to the Creta do you suggest? I do not mind waiting for six months.

For your mostly city driving in Bangalore and an easy-to-live-with automatic, the Kia Seltos is a very good choice. It feels familiar but is larger, more spacious and better equipped than your old Creta, with a bigger boot as well.We recommend the 1.5 litre petrol with the IVT automatic. The gearbox is smooth and seamless, and the refined engine makes everyday driving effortless. The Hyundai Creta is also a good option, but the Seltos feels slightly more spacious and is a better value at a similar price. Plus, the Hyundai Creta is expected to be replaced early next year, and since you are willing to wait, this is something you can keep in mind before making a final decision.

We already have two cars in our family - a Tiago EV for regular commute and office use, and a Tata Altroz AMT for my wife. We want to purchase another vehicle, mostly an SUV, for outstation rides and office use. Our yearly run would be around 30,000 km. Since we are already using an EV and are quite happy with the running and maintenance costs, would you suggest another EV with a longer range, or something else?

Since you are already using an EV for your daily commute, it makes sense to look at a combustion-engine SUV for your outstation runs. The low running costs of an EV are very tempting. But if the primary use is highway and long-distance travel, a conventional SUV is simply more practical. Also, it is easier to refuel without having to plan around charging infrastructure. With an annual running of around 30,000km, a diesel SUV makes very good sense. There are quite a few strong options in the market. The safest bet is the Hyundai Creta 1.5 diesel automatic. It’s efficient, smooth, proven, affordable to maintain and has good resale value.A better alternative in the same space is the Kia Seltos 1.5 diesel automatic. It shares its mechanics with the Creta but feels a bit more spacious and has fresher-looking interiors. If your driving is predominantly outstation and you value high-speed stability, the Mahindra XUV 7XO with the strong 2.2 diesel is an excellent highway car. It feels solid and planted at speed, though it’s not as manoeuvrable in the city as the Creta and Seltos, nor is it quite as fuel efficient

I am 61 and wish to buy a new car. My wife and I, sometimes along with friends, plan to travel extensively within India. Please advise a good, comfortable, and reliable vehicle with service centres all over India in case of issues. The same vehicle will be used for daily use in Mumbai and surrounding areas.

You have not specified your budget, but since you currently own a Maruti S-Cross, we assume you want nothing less than a mid-size SUV. Our default choice is the Hyundai Creta, which has been a tried-and-tested product for over a decade. It can be easily serviced across the country, giving you confidence for the many road trips you are planning. Besides, the Hyundai Creta is a comfortable, spacious and feature-packed vehicle and is easy to spend long hours in. If you plan to do a lot of road trips, consider the 1.5 diesel variant. It is efficient and smooth when paired with a 6-speed auto. You can also consider the Kia Seltos, which doesn’t have as good a sales network as Hyundai. But the Seltos, in its new avatar, is better than the Creta as a product. However, given your concern for a good service network, we would still advise you to go for the Creta.
