Hi, I’m from Bengaluru and this will be my first car. I commute about 70 km round trip to office three times a week, and I estimate that I will drive around 1,000 km per month, mostly in the city. I am planning to buy an SUV with rear seating comfortable enough for three people. I was thinking of booking the Maruti Grand Vitara Delta Automatic, as my budget is around ₹15 lakh on-road. Please suggest whether this is a good buy or if I should consider other options. I value good features, efficiency, and low maintenance in the long run.

The Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara would not really suit your needs. Within your budget, you would not get the strong hybrid, which is the one that would meet your needs for efficiency.

Moreover, seating three at the rear is a big consideration for you; you would find that rear space, especially headroom and the width would be tight. For you, we would thus rather recommend the Tata Sierra, it offers very good rear space and is high on features too.

However, if you can wait a few months, we would recommend that you do so. This is to make sure that the car is trouble-free. If you need to buy a car soon, we would suggest you look at the Mahindra XUV3XO

The car is shorter in length than the earlier-mentioned SUVs, but you will only find the boot space tight. Rear space, especially the cabin width for 3 people, would in fact be very good. It's also a well-equipped car that is reliable, but opt for the diesel as this would be more efficient than the petrol units.

I am planning to buy a new petrol car with a manual gearbox. My budget is around ₹13 lakh. My usage will be 70% city and 30% highway. Could you please suggest SUV options within this budget?

With a daily running of around 50 to 60 km, a diesel automatic makes good sense as your monthly usage will easily justify the better fuel efficiency and relaxed nature of a diesel engine.Between the two options, the Kia Seltos diesel automatic is the better choice overall. The diesel engine is refined, and the 6-speed torque converter automatic is smooth and well-suited for normal city traffic as well as highway drives. The Tata Sierra is also a strong Midsize SUV with more cabin space. But its diesel engine is noticeably noisier and less refined than the Hyundai-Kia diesel. It is also over a lakh more expensive in comparable automatic variants. For your usage and preference for an automatic, the Seltos diesel automatic is the more balanced and sensible option thanks to its refinement, smooth gearbox and lower price.

The Mahindra XUV 3XO REVX A 1.2 Petrol GDI with the manual gearbox would be a good option to consider. It gets a 1.2-litre 131hp turbo-petrol engine that is the most powerful in the segment. It is a light and brisk 6-speed manual gearbox that is easy to use in the city. It is spacious on the inside with comfy, broad seats up front and a good amount of room at the rear. Bootspace isn't the best at 364 litres, but if you're primarily going to drive in the city, this shouldn't be a big problem. The performance is very good, the ride comfort is excellent, and you get a good amount of kit as well. A panoramic sunroof, LED headlamps, keyless entry with push button start, dual-zone climate control and more.

I am confused between the Mahindra XUV 7XO AX5 and Mahindra XUV 7XO AX7 variants, as I prefer practicality over extra features. Alternatively, should I consider waiting for the Tata Sierra?

If you don't mind the additional spend, we'd recommend the Mahindra XUV 7XO in AX7 trim. Elements like its larger 18-inch alloy wheels and leatherette upholstery add greatly to the look and feel of things. While auto climate control, a 540-degree camera and front parking sensors are features you will appreciate every day. The Tata Sierra is not a like-for-like alternative to the Mahindra 7XO. The 7XO is larger, more powerful and also offers three rows of seating.Further, the 7XO is slightly pricier, too. Within Tata's range, the Tata Safari is an alternative to the 7XO.
