I’m looking for a petrol hatchback with a low running cost. Which would you recommend, the new VW Polo 1.2 or the Maruti Swift?

AAA It depends on which 1.2 petrol engine you are opting for in the Polo. If you are looking at the base three-cylinder engine, you may be disappointed with the performance. This engine is not as powerful or refined as the class best. The Swift 1.2 petrol is a far nicer car to drive than the base Polo petrol and, crucially, will be less expensive to maintain in the long run. Also, the sales and service network of Maruti is the best. However, if you are opting for the Polo 1.2 GT TSI, then this car is a completely different animal. It’s the nicest hatchback to drive and quite efficient too, but is considerably more expensive than the Swift.
