I currently own a first-generation Toyota Innova that has been with me since 2008 and has clocked around 2.75 lakh kilometres. Since it has served my family extremely well, I am now looking for an upgrade. Naturally, I am inclined towards the Toyota Innova Hycross because my priorities continue to be: Excellent space and family comfort Good ride quality and highway stability Reliability and long-term peace of mind A vehicle that is also enjoyable to drive personally My monthly running is quite high at around 9,000 km, with nearly 70% usage in Mumbai city traffic and 30% highway driving, mainly on the Mumbai–Satara route. My budget is around ₹26 lakh, which unfortunately does not comfortably accommodate the Hycross Hybrid variants. I have therefore also considered the non-hybrid Innova Hycross GX(O), but I am concerned about its fuel efficiency given my predominantly city usage. Would the non-hybrid Hycross still make sense for my usage pattern, or should I consider other SUVs or MPVs instead? I am open to both body styles, but I am not particularly inclined towards the Maruti Ertiga or Kia Carens since I want this purchase to feel like a genuine upgrade from my current Innova. Could you please suggest the best options considering comfort, fuel efficiency, reliability, driving experience, long-term ownership, and overall value?

Since your monthly usage is very high, we'd advise you to avoid the Toyota Innova Hycross NA petrol, as this MPV isn't very fuel-efficient. You could consider the Maruti Invicto Zeta Plus hybrid. Maruti is offering substantial discounts on the car, and if you're lucky, it could even fall within your Rs 26 lakh budget. Being a badge-engineered version of the Toyota Innova Hycross, the Invicto is just as spacious, comfortable and efficient, and as a family car that'll be used for long distances, it is certainly one you must consider.

The Tata Safari Diesel is another capable, comfortable seven-seater to cover long distances with family. Compared to a Mahindra XUV 7XO, the Tata Sierra is more comfortable for the third row occupants, while still having slightly better boot space, hence it gets our vote.

Alternatively, have you considered an electric vehicle? The Mahindra XEV 9S is a great option, and will be very economical to run. Also, unlike the XUV 7XO, which gets a fixed middle row, the XEV 9S has an adjustable (sliding) middle bench to free up space for third row occupants. As far as power, range and charging times go, the XEV 9S is a very capable option. If you can arrange for home charging, this is one car you must seriously consider.

Following my previous question about replacing my Tata Hexa, which has covered 1.25 lakh km, with a new SUV or MPV within a budget of Rs. 35 lakh and for a daily commute of around 85 km, I test-drove both the Tata Safari and the Toyota Hycross. However, I found both to be lacking in power. Could you suggest some other suitable options? I am also open to considering 5-seater SUVs, although a diesel remains my preference. Additionally, would the Mahindra XUV 7XO Diesel be a good choice for my requirements? If so, which variant would you recommend?

Given your daily 85 km commute and the fact that you're coming from a Tata Hexa, a diesel car still makes the most sense. The Toyota Innova Hycross is a petrol-hybrid MPV, so it was never going to feel as powerful as a diesel. The Tata Safari, while offering good torque, isn't the most responsive diesel SUV in its segment.The Mahindra XUV 7XO Diesel is the option we would recommend. It is one of the most powerful diesel SUVs in its segment, with strong mid-range performance and a genuinely engaging driving experience. It also strikes a good balance between comfort, space, and features, making it a well-rounded replacement for the Hexa. As for the XUV 7XO variants, the AX7 is the sweet spot, offering most of the key features without pushing the price too close to your Rs. 35 lakh budget.

I currently drive a Suzuki Dzire diesel, and it gives good mileage. My daily driving is around 80-100 km, and my total monthly running is about 2,000-2,500 km. I am planning to buy the Mahindra XUV 7XO diesel. Is this a good decision, and how much diesel will the 7XO consume?

With your current Dzire diesel returning good mileage and a monthly running of 2,000-2,500 km, a diesel SUV like the Mahindra XUV 7XO is a sensible upgrade. The 7XO diesel is a strong highway performer with a comfortable ride and a spacious cabin, making it well suited to your high-mileage usage.In terms of fuel efficiency, you can realistically expect around 14-15kpl on the highway and 10-11kpl in the city, depending on driving style and traffic conditions. I own a 2017 Ciaz Alpha Automatic and want to upgrade to either an electric or a hybrid car. The car will be chauffeur-driven and used only for city driving of about 40-50 km per day in Noida, with no major traffic. My budget is Rs 20-25 lakh. For your usage, a hybrid car makes more sense. With 40-50 km daily of city driving in Noida and no major traffic, an electric car would not deliver a meaningful cost advantage over a hybrid, and you would be taking on charging infrastructure and range planning for no real benefit. The Maruti Suzuki Victoris Hybrid is the best fit for your requirements. It is a full hybrid, so it offers excellent fuel efficiency in city driving and is also comfortable to be chauffeur-driven. The rear seat is spacious, the ride is comfortable, and the car is easy to live with. Headroom is a bit tight if you are on the taller side. Avoid the sunroof if that is the case for you.The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder Hybrid is mechanically identical, but the Victoris gets a more premium interior and a better feature set at a similar price.If you can charge at home and still want to go electric, the Tata Sierra EV is the best option for your needs, but given your usage, the hybrid is the more sensible choice.

For your usage, the Skoda Kylaq is a good upgrade. Your 65 km daily expressway run means you need a car that is stable at speed and comfortable over long distances. The Kylaq delivers that very well. At your budget, you could get a lower-spec automatic, which would make it easy to drive in city traffic, which matters for your twice-a-month urban runs. The automatic gearbox is a torque converter, so its shifts are very smooth and it is very reliable too. The only possible downside is that fuel efficiency is not going to be very high, and given your high daily running, this is something that might bother you. If so, opt for the Maruti Suzuki Fronx 1.2L, which is also good at higher speeds and would be more fuel efficient. The auto box in this case is an AMT, which would not be as smooth, but this would only be a bit of a bother in city traffic and not on steady highway cruising.

I have been using Honda City manual for the last 21 years. Now, I want a car with automatic transmission for city running mostly. My average running is around 1000km a month. Can you suggest whether I should buy Seltos, Creta, Kushaq or Elevate?

Given your usage of around 1,000 km a month, mostly in the city, the priority should be a smooth and reliable automatic transmission, good ride comfort and ease of ownership. The Kia Seltos IVT is the most natural recommendation here. The IVT gearbox is also very smooth, and the Seltos feels more premium and feature-rich than the competition. Alternatively, consider the Honda Elevate. The CVT is exceptionally smooth in stop-start traffic, Honda’s ownership experience is proven, and the car is simple, reliable and easy to live with.The Skoda Kushaq is the driver’s choice, with a more engaging driving experience, but in city running, that doesn't matter much. The Hyundai Creta is a good all-rounder, but it is due for a full model change in 2027, which makes the Seltos and Elevate stronger recommendations at this point.

Hey, We are planning to buy a sub-4-metre SUV, and our main requirement is good suspension for Bengaluru’s pothole-filled roads, especially as my wife is pregnant. We have shortlisted the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Mahindra XUV 3XO, and Tata Nexon. Which one would you recommend for our requirements? I was also considering a larger SUV like the Honda Elevate, but a well-equipped variant costs around Rs. 18 lakh on-road, which is beyond my budget. Could you suggest some good options in both categories? I can stretch my budget up to around Rs. 15 lakh on-road if required.

Given your priorities, the Mahindra XUV 3XO is the best fit. It has the most comfortable ride in the segment, with a suspension that deals with broken roads and potholes better than the Brezza or Nexon. The wide rear seat and good cabin space will also make a difference for your wife and family. The Brezza is the more reliable long-term ownership proposition, but its ride is not as plush as the 3XO. The Nexon is a good all-rounder, but the 3XO has the edge on ride comfort and rear seat space.On the Honda Elevate, it is a solid, reliable SUV with a comfortable ride, but at Rs 18 lakh on-road for the well-equipped variants, it is not worth stretching your budget for. The 3XO gives you a better ride and more features for less money.Overall, the 3XO is the best balance of ride comfort, space and value for your requirements. Go for the petrol automatic variant for the smoothest city driving experience.
