I am looking to buy a petrol automatic car with a budget of up to ₹8 lakh. I travel about 90 km daily in heavy city traffic (Gurgaon–Noida). Is the Hyundai Exter a good option, or can you suggest a better alternative, as mileage is a priority? I’m not interested in cars as small as the Celerio.

The Hyundai Exter is a good all-rounder and will be a nice upgrade from your existing Maruti Wagon R. However, considering you drive a lot in peak traffic, an automatic would be ideal, so you could consider stretching your budget for the automatic version of the Exter.

However, if you want to stick closer to your 8 lakh budget, consider the Renault Kiger 1.0-litre naturally aspirated engine. The automatic version would be only slightly above the 8 lakh mark, but you will get a car that is compact enough for the city, spacious inside, and has a good ride.

In both cases, the gearbox will be an automated manual (AMT), so there will not be a significant mileage difference compared to the manual versions.

The Dzire is also one of the most comfortable and most efficient cars in this price range, with a compliant ride and a well-sorted suspension setup that makes it easy to live with on a daily basis. Maruti's service network and low maintenance costs further strengthen its case as a long-term ownership proposition.The Hyundai Exter CNG is a good value alternative, but it does not offer the same level of space or comfort as the Dzire. On the positive side, due to its twin-cylinder setup, you still get a reasonable boot with the Exter.Overall, the Dzire CNG strikes the best balance between price, space, comfort, efficiency and long-term ownership peace of mind.

The 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine is strong and refined, making this Mahindra car well suited to both city and highway driving, while the manual gearbox is smooth and easy to use.The Tata Safari is still a good car, with a comfortable ride and a spacious cabin, but the XUV 7XO feels more modern and premium inside.

We would strongly advise against installing aftermarket CNG on any of these SUVs. All three – the Tata Safari, Mahindra XUV 7XO and Scorpio N - are large, heavy vehicles with powerful turbocharged petrol engines. Fitting CNG to such engines is not recommended, as it can lead to drivability issues, increased wear and potential reliability concerns over time. More importantly, these SUVs are not designed with CNG in mind, and the installation can compromise safety and performance.If fuel economy is a top priority, opt for their diesel versions instead. The Mahindra and Tata offer strong torque, excellent highway efficiency and are well-suited to long-distance touring. If you are set on CNG, it is better to look at smaller, naturally aspirated petrol cars that are either factory-fitted or specifically designed for CNG use.Between the three, the XUV 7XO diesel would be our recommendation. It offers a more modern package, better ride comfort and a more premium cabin than the Scorpio N, while the Safari diesel is also a strong contender if you prefer Tata's design and feature set. But CNG should not be the deciding factor here.
