I am looking to buy something under 20L all-inclusive. I am more or less sure that I am getting an AWD or 4x4 unit. The only 4x4 in this range is the Jimmy; the Thar 3-door does not work for me. In AWD, I also get ADAS, 360 example Victoris. I am not looking to go adventurous, but I am looking for a car to go through all sorts of roads. Is AWD capable enough, or do I have to compromise with Jimmy?

Go for the Marutu Suzuki Victoris AWD, not the Marutu Suzuki Jimny, for what you plan to do. You said no real off-roading, just “all sorts of roads” - broken village stretches, rain-soaked highways, mild slush. The Victoris’ AWD will send drive to the rear when it slips, so you keep moving without the drama, while giving you far better ride comfort, highway stability, space and boot than the Jimny. You also get a more modern cabin and features like a 360-degree camera, and in some trims, ADAS is available.

Jimny’s low-range 4x4 only really pays off in deep ruts, rock steps and deep mud. For daily use, it’s slower, bouncier, narrower, and the boot is smaller.

One honest catch with the Victoris: AWD won't be as fuel-efficient as the FWD model. If your routes are just rough and unpredictable rather than extreme, the Victoris AWD will suit you fine.

Thank you for the opinion, to add on on top of this. If snow is in the scene say Spiti kind of set up or untared roads with pebbles and all, I assume AWD is capable suited to it. Also AWD is as good as 4x4 when the mandate is 4x4 vehicles on some stretch?

I just love Elevate with its ground clearance, reliability, adas, fuel efficient, safety, etc but I also want a family suv which can also go off the road sometimes with awd. So much confused between Grand Vitara vs Elevate vs Victoris vs Thar Roxx mx5 4x4. I have a slight issue with Grand Vitara with its exhaust pipe over hang which can be seen evidently at the middle of the car from side view. Is it the same with Victoris??

Hi, I have been driving Maruti Suzuki Swift petrol for 17 years now and am planning to buy a new car. My yearly running would be around 5000kms with 50% driving on highway and 50% driving in Tier 1 and 2 cities. My budget is 20 lakh maximum (on-road) in Bengaluru and I plan to retain the car for 10-15 years. I am too confused on NA engine petrol car due to ethanol blending issue and am inclined towards Diesel. I have shortlisted Victoris MT, Grand Vitara MT, 3XO Diesel MT and Nexon Diesel MT. I require 360-degree car camera system and sufficient boot space. I am open to all suggestions please.

The Maruti Suzuki Victoris is a good upgrade from the Swift, and is backed by Maruti's widespread network. It is a well-rounded car, but do keep in mind, it's 1.5-petrol engine is efficient and feels adequately responsive in the city, but it can feel a bit lacklustre on the highway, especially while overtaking. You could consider a Honda Elevate. It is a practical, sensible SUV with a more powerful petrol engine. Both these vehicles should serve you well over your 10-15-year ownership period.

I am looking for a mid-size SUV in the Rs 15-16 lakh range. I have narrowed my list down to the new Duster 1.3 Turbo Techno+ and the Hyundai Creta 1.5 NA S(O). I really like the Creta's interior, but I am concerned that since Kia has already launched the new-generation Seltos, the new-generation Creta may not be far away. My daily running is approximately 80km, mostly on the highway, with some city driving. Please suggest which would be the better buy.

With an 80km daily run, mostly on the highway, the priority should be a car that is comfortable over long distances, stable at speed and easy to live with. The Duster 1.3 Turbo Techno+ is the better fit here. The Renault Duster’s ride quality is genuinely excellent, soaking up bad roads and undulations in a way few cars in this price range can. It also feels planted and confidence-inspiring at highway speeds, which makes long daily commutes far less tiring. The 1.3 turbo petrol engine is punchy and well-suited to highway driving, giving you strong overtaking performance when you need it. Moreover, the Techno+ variant represents excellent value in this price range, especially for your needs.The Hyundai Creta 1.5 NA S(O) is a very good car, but the naturally aspirated engine is not as strong on the highway, especially when fully loaded. I have a Tata Nexon Creative AMT that is only a year old, but I have already had to replace the spark plugs four times and the ignition coil once. I am still facing engine misfires and vibrations inside the car. I am honestly fed up with Tata's service, as they have been unable to resolve the issue. I currently drive a Grand i10 Manual petrol and am now planning to buy a new compact SUV that is comfortable, fuel efficient and has low maintenance. My usage is 35km of daily office commute in Delhi-NCR traffic. Please advice which option is best fit amongst Hyundai Venue HX 6T, SONET HTK+O and XUV 3XO.

Go for the Hyundai Venue. With your daily 35km commute in Delhi NCR traffic, comfort and low maintenance are key, and the Venue delivers on both. The 1.2 NA petrol is smooth, refined and easy to drive in stop-start conditions, while Hyundai’s service network and ownership experience are among the best in the segment. The HX6T variant also gives you a good balance of features without pushing the budget too far.The Sonet HTK+O is mechanically very similar, but the Venue is a newer model and offers a more spacious cabin. The XUV 3XO is also a good option, but its turbo petrol engine won't be as efficient as the Hyundai’s.Overall, the Venue is the most sensible upgrade from your Grand i10 for daily city use.
