We were planning to upgrade from a hatchback (2008 Hyundai i10) to a sedan within a budget of Rs 12 lakh. We have considered the VW Vento 1.6 MPI MT (Highline) and the Skoda Rapid 1.6 L MPI (Ambition), as they were of same platform and have similar features. I personally like the Skoda, and have recommended to my uncle and a friend, to buy an Octavia and Rapid last year. However, having compared the features of the Vento with the Rapid, and hearing reviews from my friends about the former, I’ve been contemplating between these two. In the transition to BS6, the 1.6-litre MPI engine will be phased out and the 1.0-litre TSI engine will be available. We drive within the city and rarely go driving on trips, which comes to a usage of around 4,000km every six months. Should I go with the 1.0-litre TSI engine or explore other options?

The 1.6 MPI engine is a very old unit and as you said, it has been phased out as it does not meet BS6 emission norms. The Octavia is a much better option but it’s also a much more expensive model. The 1.0 TSI is a new engine and develops sufficient power. It will be available in both, the Rapid and the Vento, and they are essentially the same car under the skin. If you are inclined to the Rapid then you can go for it, the 1.0 TSI engine is pretty fuel efficient too.
