Maharashtra RTO: All 50 Offices, Code List and Road Tax

Maharashtra has 50 RTO offices, coded MH-01 to MH-50, run by the state transport department. Which one is yours is set by your address, so an office a few kilometres away may still not be the one that can register your car. The full code list, the road tax slabs and what each service costs are below. Every plate issued in the state starts with MH.

What the Letters and Numbers Mean

MH is the state. The next two digits are the office that registered the vehicle, then a letter series, then the four-digit number.

Maharashtra issues MH-01 to MH-50 across 50 offices. Low numbers are the oldest offices, so the code is a rough age and origin check on any used car.

Jurisdiction goes by your address, not by distance, so the closest office is not always yours.

Road Tax in Maharashtra

Maharashtra charges a one-time lifetime tax on private vehicles, calculated as a percentage of the ex-showroom price and currently running 11% to 13%. It is the largest single line item between the ex-showroom price and what you actually pay.

Road tax on a petrol vehicle
Ex-showroom price bandLifetime tax rate
Under Rs. 10 lakh11%
Rs. 10 lakh to Rs. 20 lakh12%
Above Rs. 20 lakh13%

How to pay Maharashtra road tax and get the receipt

  1. 1

New vehicles: your dealer pays it

For a new vehicle the dealer collects the tax at registration and it appears as a line on your invoice. Check that it does, and keep the receipt.

  2. 2

    Everything else: pay on Parivahan

Re-registration, a vehicle brought in from another state, or a missed payment is paid online on Parivahan against the registration number.

  3. 3

Download the receipt the same day

The tax receipt is generated immediately and is the document you will be asked for at transfer or at a check post. Download it while the transaction reference is still on screen.

  4. 4

    Late payment carries a penalty

Interest accrues from the due date, and an unpaid tax will block a transfer or an NOC until it is cleared.

Services at Maharashtra RTOs and How to Apply

What each visit is actually for, and how much of it is online.

Your dealer files this in Maharashtra, but the RC is issued in your name by the office that covers your address. Form 20, with Form 21 and Form 22 from the dealer and manufacturer.

Both sides have to file, which is why used-car deals stall here. Form 29 is the seller's intimation, Form 30 the buyer's application, filed at the office covering the buyer's address.

You need an NOC when the vehicle moves to a different RTO, inside Maharashtra or out of it. Form 28 at the office that registered it, which then confirms no dues or cases are pending.

Once the loan is repaid the lender's name stays on the RC until you remove it. Form 35 plus the lender's no-dues letter clears it.

The learner test is online. The permanent licence needs a driving test, so it has to be booked at an office with a test track.

High security plates are mandatory. Book through the state portal or the manufacturer's site and have them fitted at an approved centre.

Fancy and Choice Number Plates in Maharashtra

You can pick your own registration number instead of taking the next one in the series. Maharashtra runs this as an auction: the transport portal publishes which numbers in the current series are free, each category carries a reserve price, and you bid.

Fancy and choice number plates in Maharashtra
Number typeExamplesReserve price
Single digit0001 to 0009Highest reserve in the series
Round hundreds and thousands0100, 1000, 5000High reserve
Popular repeats0786, 1111, 7777, 9999High reserve
Semi-fancy pairs1122, 2200, 3300Mid reserve
Any other choice numberAnything free in the current seriesBase reserve

Reserve prices are set per category by Maharashtra and are highest in the metro series. The reserve is a bid, not a fee, so the final price can be higher. Check the state transport portal for the current schedule.

How the Booking Works

  1. 1

    Check what is free

Log in to the state transport portal, pick your office and series, and see which numbers in it are unallotted.

  2. 2

    Pay the reserve amount

This is a bid, not a fee, so it counts towards the final price if you win and is refunded if you do not.

  3. 3

    Wait out the bidding window

If nobody else wants the number it is allotted at the reserve price. If someone does, it goes to the higher bid.

  4. 4

    Use it within the deadline

An allotted number comes with a booking letter and a validity period. Register a vehicle against it in time or the allotment lapses.

Maharashtra RTO Documents Checklist 2026

Anything missing from this list is what will send you home for a second visit.

What to carry:

  • Proof of identity

Aadhaar, passport or PAN card. Original plus a photocopy, because the counter keeps the copy.

  • Proof of address in Maharashtra

This decides which office is yours. A utility bill, rent agreement or Aadhaar with the current address.

  • Form 20, filled and signed

The registration application. Your dealer usually supplies it pre-filled for a new vehicle.

  • Sale certificate, Form 21

From the dealer. It has to match the invoice exactly, including the chassis number.

  • Roadworthiness certificate, Form 22

From the manufacturer. Missing this is a common reason a new registration is returned.

  • Valid insurance policy

At least third-party cover, active from the date of registration.

  • Pollution certificate

Not needed for a brand-new vehicle in its first year. Needed for everything else.

  • Road tax payment receipt

Paid by the dealer for a new vehicle. Carry it anyway.

  • Passport-size photographs

Two, recent. Some offices still ask at the counter.

  • Loan documents, if you are financing

Form 34 and the lender's letter, so the hypothecation is recorded at registration rather than later.

Maharashtra Transport Department: Official Portals

Three sources, in the order you should try them:

Parivahan Sewa

The central portal. Registration services, NOC, ownership transfer, tax payment and appointment booking for Maharashtra.

Sarathi

The driving licence side of Parivahan. Learner licence applications, test slot booking, renewals and duplicate licences.

Maharashtra Transport Department

The state site. Fancy number auctions, fee notifications, office contact lists and the tax slab circulars this page is built from.

Looking for a Traffic Challan?

Challans are issued by the traffic police, not by the RTO, and they are paid on a separate portal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Maharashtra has 50 RTO offices, issuing codes MH-01 to MH-50. The full list, with the city each one covers, is in the code table on this page.

Maharashtra charges a one-time lifetime tax of 11% to 13% of the ex-showroom price on a private car, depending on the price band and fuel type. The slab table on this page has the current rates.

MH-01 is the lowest and therefore the oldest code in the state. Codes were allotted in order as offices opened, so a low number means an older office and a car registered there cannot be newer than the series it carries.

Sign in to Parivahan, open the tax payment section and search by your registration number. The receipt for any completed payment can be re-downloaded there at any time, which is what you will be asked for at transfer.

For up to twelve months, yes, with no paperwork. Beyond that you need an NOC from your Maharashtra RTO, then have to re-register in the new state and pay its road tax, with a partial refund claimable here.

MH identifies Maharashtra, and the two digits after it identify the office that registered the vehicle. The code table on this page maps every number to its office.

Reserve prices are set per category by the state, from a few thousand rupees for an ordinary choice number to several lakh for a single digit or a popular repeat in a metro series. The reserve is a bid, so the final price can be higher.

Most offices are closed on the second and fourth Saturday and open on the others, on shorter hours and mainly for payments and collections rather than tests. Sundays and state government holidays are closed.

Fees and tax rates checked against Maharashtra transport department notifications and the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989.
