The calendar for the 2024 F1 season has been announced, featuring a total of 24 races. The season kicks off in Bahrain on March 2 and wraps up in Abu Dhabi on December 8, with F1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali saying it “strikes the right balance between traditional races and new and existing venues.”

A number of races have been moved to different slots as the championship looks to make its freight transport more efficient.

  2. Season starts in Bahrain, ends in Abu Dhabi
  3. Japan moved to earlier slot

Three Saturday races

The season starts with two back-to-back Saturday races, with Bahrain on March 2 and Saudi Arabia on March 9. While F1 traditionally races on Sunday, these changes have been made to ensure these races can completed before Ramadan commences on March 10.

The Las Vegas GP is another race that will be held on a Saturday - just like this year – since Saturday is a primetime slot for the US audience.

Just how sustainable is the 2024 F1 calendar?

In a bid to reduce logistical burdens and make the season for sustainable, a handful of races have been shuffled. Japan has been moved from its traditional end-season slot to April 7. This will be followed by the Chinese GP, which is set to return for the first time since 2019.

Azerbaijan has also been moved to a September slot, placing it right between the Italian GP and Singapore GP. And finally, Qatar has been moved back-to-back with the Abu Dhabi finale. The season will feature a total of three triple-headers – Spain/Austria/Britain, USA/Mexico/Brazil and Vegas/Qatar/Abu Dhabi.

Of course, not all the races are grouped regionally; the Canadian GP, for example, falls right between a set of European races due to weather constraints. F1 admits that work on streamlining future calendars “will continue while being realistic to the fact that as a world championship, with climatic and contractual constraints, there will always be travel required that cannot be completely regionalised.”
