Questions you may find useful

Hi Autocar India, I’m planning to buy a new car under Rs 16 lakh for my family of five. My monthly usage is around 500km, mostly on highways. I’m currently considering: Hyundai i20 N Line, Hyundai Verna 1.5 MPI, Kia Seltos, Volkswagen Virtus, and Skoda Slavia. I personally prefer low-slung cars over SUVs. My priorities are long-term reliability, family comfort, highway stability, good safety, reasonable maintenance costs, and overall ownership experience. Which one would you recommend for my requirements, especially for long-term ownership? Also, which engine and variant would be the best choice within my Rs 16 lakh budget? Thanks! I’d love to hear your expert recommendation.

You can get the HX6+ variant of the Verna with the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol-manual powertrain, which is pleasant to drive, stable on highways, and paired with a comfortable, soft suspension setup. Being a Hyundai car, it also has reasonable maintenance costs. The Hyundai Verna has also scored a perfect 5-star rating in the Global NCAP crash tests, so you can rest assured about safety. The Skoda Slavia is due for an update very soon, but in this budget you will have to settle for entry-level variants that don't offer much equipment. The Verna, on the other hand, will get you LED headlamps, front ventilated seats, a single-pane sunroof and others. All things considered, the Hyundai Verna is the best choice for your requirements.

How do you rate Hyundai Verna in comparison with Virtus and Slavia

7w

I have a 2016 Hyundai i20 & I'm looking to upgrade to a Turbo DCT sedan. I test drove the 3 options and between the VW twins I prefer the exterior & interior of the Slavia. The interior of the Verna is much better than the Slavia and so far I've had a positive service experience with Hyundai, while Skoda does have a bad reputation for after-sales service. The Verna however felt less fun to drive. How likely is an N-line version of the Verna being launched? I'm finding it difficult to choose between the Verna & the Slavia.

I am planning to buy Honda City V CVT. Is it still worth buying the Honda City in 2026 from a long-term (7-10 years) ownership and reliability standpoint? Or should I consider other cars in the segment, such as the Virtus, Slavia, or Verna?

Verified
5w

Yes, the Honda City V CVT is still worth buying in 2026 from a long-term ownership and reliability perspective. The City remains one of the most dependable and well-rounded sedans in the segment, with a proven naturally aspirated petrol engine, smooth CVT gearbox and Honda's strong reputation for reliability and low maintenance costs. It is also a very comfortable and spacious family car, with a well-sorted ride and a premium ownership experience. The Volkswagen Virtus and Skoda Slavia are more driver-focused cars with stronger turbo petrol engines and a more engaging driving experience, but they do not have the same long-term reliability track record as the City. You can expect the Volkswagen Virtus mileage to be around 9 to 12 kpl in the city and 15 to 18 kpl on the highway. The Hyundai Verna is a strong all-rounder with a more feature-rich cabin and a more powerful turbo petrol option, and the Verna price starts at Rs 10.99 lakh (ex-showroom), but the City still feels more practical and better suited to long-term ownership. The Hyundai Verna Mileage is up to 13.5kpl in real-world driving. If your priority is a car that you can keep for 7-10 years with minimal fuss, the City remains the safest and most sensible choice in the segment. The only reason to look at the Virtus, Slavia or Verna would be if you specifically want a more powerful turbo petrol engine and good driving dynamics Otherwise, the City V CVT is still the benchmark for long-term ownership.

I need a sedan, I drive 80% in the city where roods are pretty poor. My priorities are efficiency and ability to handle bad roads. Which one should I pick among Slavia, city and Verna?
