At this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans, Toyota showed us the GR Super Sports, a hybrid hypercar expected to compete in the replacement for the LMP1 class from 2020 onwards. The car was previously teased by Toyota at the end of last year.

The GR boasts of some extremely impressive numbers. Using a 2.4-litre V6 and a hybrid system, the car manages 986hp. Mind you, the V6 has two turbos bolted onto it, and the hybrid system is based on Toyota’s TS050 LMP1 prototype.

The GR gets styling befitting a hypercar, with pronounced wheel arches and large air scoops giving it a silhouette similar to that of the TS050. A low spoiler is seen at the rear, and the overall stance of the car is low and sleek. Underneath the sculpted bodywork, the car uses a carbon fibre monocoque chassis. Suspension is comprised of double wishbones at all corners, with inboard mounted shock absorbers.

The Japanese manufacturer has also announced its intention to produce a road-going version of this striking concept, which would go up against current hypercars from Ferrari, McLaren and Porsche, as well as the yet-to-be-released models from Mercedes-Benz and Aston Martin.
