Volkswagen has decided not to introduce a petrol engine in the new Passat for the time being.

Unlike the outgoing model which was powered by a 1.8TSi motor, the new car gets only one engine, a 170bhp 2-litre TDI mated to either a 6-speed manual or DSG auto ‘box. VW fees that with the new diesel engine which has 30bhp more than previous 2-litre TDI there is no need for a petrol option at this moment. Also, VW wants to grow volumes for the 170bhp TDI which is likely to be the staple powerplant for the VW Group in India and shared across the Audi, Skoda and VW brands
