BMW showcased its new 6-series Gran Turismo at the 2017 Frankfurt motor show. The model replaces the 5-series GT and will arrive in India next year after being displayed at the 2018 Auto Expo.

The five-door, five-seat liftback model is built on the same lightweight Cluster Architecture (CLAR) underpinnings as the new 5-series and weighs 150kg less than the previous 5-series GT. The car is meant to be a more practical version of the 5-series, offering more space on the inside, thanks to its larger dimensions.

With a length of 5,091mm, 1,902mm width, 1,538mm height and 3,070mm wheelbase, the 6-series GT is 155mm longer, 34mm wider, 59mm taller and has a wheelbase that is 95mm longer than the 5-series. The boot can take up to 610 litres of luggage, expanding to 1,800 litres with the 40:20:40 split rear seats.

The engine options for the 6-series GT are expected to be shared with the recently launched 5-series, which means a set of 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engines, along with a 3.0-litre, inline-six diesel motor.

Unlike the 5-series, the 6-series GT has a greater focus on comfort indicated by the standard air-suspension with self-levelling, a ‘Comfort Plus’ drive mode for a softer ride and a reclining rear bench.

The model will feature equipment and technology on par with the 5-series, including the active air flaps in the kidney grille for improved aerodynamics, an active rear spoiler that pops up to maximise downforce at speeds above 120kph, remote parking, gesture control for the 10.25-inch touchscreen and a Bowers and Wilkins audio system.

As BMW will bring the 6-series Gran Turismo to India via the completely knocked-down (CKD) kit route and assemble it at its Chennai facility, it will help keep prices competitive.

The 6-series GT will rival the Mercedes-Benz E-class LWB when launched at the beginning of 2018.
