Maruti Suzuki becomes the latest car manufacturer to recall its product over faulty mechanism. The company has recalled its A-star models for the replacement of faulty fuel pump gasket and O ring. The move comes on the heels of Honda and Toyota recalling its cars over faulty power window switches and sticky accelerator pedals respectively.

Following reports of irregularities in the fuel tank, Maruti Suzuki has decided to recall close to 1 lakh A-star units manufactured till August 22, 2009. This is a proactive step taken by the company following outcome of an internal analysis in November 2009 where anomalies in the fuel tank of some of the vehicles were found.

Although no complaints have been reported by the customers, Maruti Suzuki has already started contacting the customers and necessary changes are being carried out.

“In November 2009, we came across an anomaly reported in the fuel tank in some of the vehicles and by December 2009 we started contacting the customers through letters. These vehicles belonged to lot made till 22nd August ’09 only,” the company spokesperson said.

“As a proactive step, we decided to check all vehicles from the lot, around 1 lakh units including those exported overseas. We are changing fuel pump gasket and O ring at no cost to customer.”

The problem arises when fuel is filled up to the brim – beyond the fuel auto cut off position – a possible fuel leakage from fuel pump mounting area may take place.

Replacing the gasket and the O ring means that the rubber part is defective, leading to leakages or likelihood of a leakage. The company is midway through the checking activity and it hopes to complete it soon.
