As part of its renewed electric vehicle push, Ford plans to introduce the Mustang with a hybrid powertrain by 2020.

The carmaker has not yet specified which engine the hybrid Mustang will be powered by. However, it has revealed that the car will offer “V8 power and even more low-end torque”, suggesting that a smaller engine – perhaps the 2.3-litre Ecoboost – will be bolstered by electric power.

Ford has also confirmed that the car will be built at the company’s Flat Rock assembly plant in Michigan. It will go on sale in other markets soon after its introduction in 2020.

The hybrid Mustang is part of the main thrust of Ford’s $4.5 billion (approximately Rs 30,664 crore) investment in electrified powertrains, which has now been extended by $700 million (approximately Rs 4,770 crore). Hybrid versions of the Transit and F-150, along with an all-electric small SUV, and two new hybrid police cars also feature in the plans. Additionally, the company is also developing a wireless charging method.

The other prong of Ford’s electrification strategy is a hybrid, fully autonomous car to be used for mobility schemes. The car will not have a steering wheel or pedals, reflecting the level of control given to the car. This car, based on the Ford Fusion, is heading to the Consumer Electronics Show in prototype form.

Ford launched the Mustang in India in July last year in its hard-top GT Fastback body style. Unlike the choice of engines available internationally, the India-spec car is available only with the 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8 paired with a six-speed automatic gearbox. The Mustang is priced at Rs 65 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
