Ford India has launched its iconic muscle car, the Mustang in India in its sixth-generation. Revealed internationally back in 2014, the sixth-gen car is larger and heavier than its predecessor and is the first Mustang to be developed as a right-hand drive making it eligible for many internationally markets including India.

Fastback GT hard-top

Internationally, the sixth-generation Mustang is available as a hard-top coupé or as a soft-top convertible though Ford has only chosen to launch the Mustang in India in its hard-top GT coupe spec.

Retro styling

The exterior of the Mustang features plenty of retro touches to the nose and rear, along with a bulging bonnet and brawny wheel arches. It also sports headlamps with LED tri-bar tail-lamps and dual exhaust pipes as standard. Design features such as the wide shoulders, lengthy bonnet, and raked roofline give the car a muscular look.

Aviation-inspired interior

The Mustang gets an aviation-inspired cabin complete with airplane-like toggle switches on the centre console. It also gets a leather-trimmed steering wheel with audio and speed controls, bucket seats, an 8.0-inch SYNC2 touchscreen infotainment system, and ambient lighting.

Equipped with a 5.0-litre V8

Internationally, the Mustang is available in three engine options – a 2.3-litre four-cylinder EcoBoost, a 3.5-litre V6 and the 5.0-litre V8. For India, Ford will launch the Mustang with the 5.0-litre V8 mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox with paddle shifters. While the motor is capable of developing up to 426hp, the engine for India has been tuned to develop 401hp. The India-spec Mustang will also come with a special performance pack as standard equipment which will include a limited-slip sports differential and four driving modes, namely Normal, Sport+, Track and Wet. The sixth-gen model is also the first to use an independent rear suspension in place of the older model’s live rear axle setup.

Price

The halo car for Ford in India, the Mustang is priced at Rs 65 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) with bookings for the car to initially open in Mumbai and Delhi.
