It's a road you have seen in the movies and possibly experienced a rendition of when playing a Grand Theft Auto video game – California's Highway 1 (popularly known as the Pacific Coast Highway) is an iconic route. The arched bridge, stunning cliffs and ocean scenery make it one of the most beautiful roads to drive on.

After 18 months of road works, Highway 1 is finally open to the public once again. A 'Dream Drive' rally was organised to mark the reopening of this highway – and what a rally it was! The idea was to have a car from every year of the road's history – a history that dates back to 1934. The event witnessed over 80 cars from completely different eras. All-electric vehicles rubbed shoulders with gas-guzzling, big-block V8s and made for quite a sight as the rally began with a lap of the Laguna Seca raceway, proceeded to join Highway 1 and finally concluded in the coastal town of Morro Bay.

Speaking at the reopening of the highway, Caroline Beteta, Visit California President & CEO, said "Driving Highway 1 is a bucket-list experience many travellers dream about and its closure made headlines around the world. Many communities along this stretch have suffered while the road has been closed. We’re proud to announce to the world today that Highway 1 is open and better than ever, and the Central Coast is ready to welcome travellers looking for the ultimate California road trip."

Stretching for 665 miles (1,070km), Highway 1 is the longest state route in California.

If you could pick any car in the world to drive on Highway 1, which would it be? Let us know in the comments.
