The TVS Motor Company has resumed operations at its factories in Hosur, Mysuru and Nalagarh. The company took this step after the government allowed resumption of industrial activities, albeit partially. What this means is that factories cannot operate at full capacity and will rely on rotational shifts with adequate gaps between shift changes.
According to TVS, all employees have been handed a manual with details about the health and safety measures in place at all three factories. These include high hygiene standards and adequate social distancing between employees. The company has also encouraged the use of digital means to work from home, ensuring that only those who are critical for the functioning of the factories will be present.
The fact that a number of manufacturers, including TVS, have begun opening factories after the government relaxed the national lockdown to some extent, is good news for the auto sector. This was a crucial step in order to revive the economy and ensure money begins to flow across the manufacturing chain.
While the resumption of production takes care of the supply side of the coin, it's equally important that the demand picks up steam. With many companies, including TVS reporting zero sales in April 2020, manufacturers and dealers are hit pretty hard.
However, there's hope that the demand for personal mobility, especially two-wheelers will pick up as people are likely to not rely on public transport once the lockdown lifts.
