Cagiva was founded back in 1950 in Varese, Italy. In its history, the motorcycle company has won races in Dakar and Motocross competitions, as well as in Grand Prix motorcycle racing. The famed Italian motorcycle company is now set to make a comeback as an e-bike brand in 2021 with a line-up of electric offerings that will be “easy to ride” and “below 4kW”.

These electric motorcycles are also expected to help MV Agusta (the brand that now owns Cagiva) reach its sales target of 25,000 units. Timur Sardarov, CEO, MV Agusta has been quoted saying that “Cagiva production will resume next year, at the latest in early 2021, and will be dedicated to electric urban mobility.” Sardarov also added “We will not make scooters, they will be motorcycles. Easy to ride and below 4kW; because at the moment no one who produces beyond this threshold can generate profits.”

Rumours suggest that these models will be affordable and we don’t have trouble believing this, based on Sardarov’s statement. 4kW motors aren’t the most powerful and we’ve seen similar figures from the Ather 450X and Bajaj Chetak e-scooters. There’s also the fact that the company is targeting high sales numbers – which the bike maker would find difficult to achieve with expensive, high-performance electric motorcycles.

This isn’t the first time Cagiva’s electric future has come to light; the company was expected to showcase the first of its line-up back in 2018. However, that didn’t go as planned and we’re hoping 2021 will be more fruitful for the famous Italian motorcycle manufacturer.
