Sir, I've been driving a Skoda Rapid Diesel for 13 years. I'm planning to buy a new car with a strong build and good fuel efficiency, either a sedan or an SUV, within a budget of ₹30 lakh. Could you please suggest some options? Thank you in advance.

The Mahindra XUV700 could be a great fit for you. It is well built, and the diesel engine is both powerful and refined, while still being reasonably efficient. The manual gearbox is good, but the engine works really well with the automatic transmission. XUV700 on-road price in (Kochi) Kerala starts with Rs. 17.92 lakh for the diesel manual and Rs. 23.53 lakh for the automatic transmission.

I want to get a car with a budget of 20 lakhs. Don't want it tobbe as big as my current Honda CR-V 2013. Should be comfortable for 5 people and give decent mileage for a city like Mumbai. What would be a good option for me amongst options like Tata Sierra, Mahindra Xuv700, Skoda Kylaq/Kushaq, Toyota Hyryder, Kia Seltos 2026 etc. Quite confused as to what will be a good balance of drivability and tech features and safety.

The best 5-seaters within a compact footprint are the Tata Sierra and the all-new Kia Seltos, mainly because of their spacious back seats which are good for three passengers. The Sierra is a good mix of a city and highway car. But in your case, since you are mainly going to be commuting in Mumbai, the Seltos with the 1.5 petrol and CVT gearbox will be the best. The Seltos is superbly equipped and a bit bigger than before, which makes it a very comfortable car.

I am loving the Harley X440 and want to buy it. Can you suggest if it is worth buying in terms of maintenance and resale value? If it’s not worth it, please suggest another similar option. I also like the RE Classic, but it is very common these days, so I want to consider another option similar to the Harley X440.

The Harley-Davidson X440 is built by Hero and is a simple motorcycle without too many complex parts or features. As such, it should largely be a decently affordable machine to live with by and large. Resale value is very subjective and is sensitive to the area you reside in, as well as a multitude of other factors. If you want something similar, bikes like the Honda CB350 models, Royal Enfield Meteor 350 and Triumph Speed 400 make for promising alternatives.Take a test ride before you decide to see which one fits you best.

Hi team, I’m planning on getting the BMW 450 GS when it is launched, but am worried about the maintenance cost. Can you share an estimate of how much I can expect to spend on maintenance over the years if I have a running of about 8,000 km a year? I’m an aggressive rider and mostly use it for weekday work commutes and occasional breakfast rides on weekends. Regards, Mohnish

There's no way to accurately portray how much the maintainance cost of the BMW F 450 GS will be, as it is yet to be launched. However, BMW bikes have a reputation for being a little pricey to live with, even the smaller 310s. You shouldn't expect the F 450 GS to be as easy on the wallet as its peers, like the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450, KTM 390 Adventure models or even the Honda NX500. We recommend you wait a while before you buy the F 450 GS so that you can see thorough reviews of the bike. Also, you can speak to actual owners of the machine, and then make an informed decision.

I am planning to buy a Mahindra XEV 9E or 9S in the next 5-6 months. The car will be used as my primary vehicle for city driving (30-40 km a day) and for 2-3 long cross-country trips per year across India. My questions are: Is the charging network reliable on Indian highways? Has Mahindra resolved the software issues related to the new platform? Is an AWD variant expected in either car in the next year? Thank you for answering my questions.

As a city car, the Mahindra XEV 9E/9S offers a good range and will work well. You’ll typically only need to charge it every couple of days, depending on your usage. In fact, if you have home charging, an EV is even more convenient than an ICE car. On the highways, it's a different story altogether. A road trip in an EV can be an adventure, as the public fast-charging network can be hit-or-miss. With some proper planning and back-ups (for charging) built into your itinerary, it is possible to travel across India except for very remote locations. The good thing is that the XEV 9E/9S has a good range, and you can comfortably get 400+ km on one charge with some careful driving. The software issues are largely resolved, as Mahindra is constantly updating the software on its EVs to iron out bugs. We have also seen a dramatic reduction in customer complaints. Though the XEV’s INGLO platform is designed to take AWD, the cost of an AWD variant is too high. Therefore, Mahindra doesn’t feel that there is an immediate market for it. Hence, an AWD variant is unlikely to be launched in the coming year.
