Renault and Nissan recently confirmed the launch of two new SUVs, which includes the all-new Duster and its Nissan counterpart for late 2025. Both models will also get seven-seater derivatives that is expected to go on sale by late 2026, with the alliance releasing a joint teaser for both models. Company sources have told us that the engine options for all four SUVs are likely to be limited to a pair of turbo-petrols.

Renault-Nissan to bank on turbo-petrol engines initially

The entry-spec turbo engine, the HR10, is a 1.0-litre unit that powers the Kiger and Magnite, though it's likely that it will get a bump up in power for the bigger SUVs. The second engine option – the HR13 – is a 156hp 1.3-litre turbo-petrol (offered on the Mercedes-Benz A-Class sedan) that debuted on the Nissan Kicks before making its way to the previous-gen Renault Duster. This is expected to make a comeback in the Renault and Nissan midsize SUVs, and both engines would likely get a 6-speed manual and CVT gearbox options.

Entry level variants could get 1.5-litre NA, no diesel

The new Renault Duster and its Nissan counterpart could also get a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol for the base variants, but there are no plans to bring back the legendary K9K diesel. A hybrid powertrain is also being explored, although the cost of its development has not been factored into the project.

These four SUVs will be based on the Renault-Nissan Alliance’s modular CMF-B platform that underpins a number of global models for both manufacturers, as well as Renault’s sister brand Dacia. This platform will be heavily localised for India in order to achieve competitive pricing.

The first-gen Renault Duster spearheaded the midsize segment in India, with its rugged looks, car-like dynamics and a mix of powertrain options including the popular K9K diesel in two states of tune. However, the upcoming SUVs will be petrol-only with petrol-hybrid powertrains not likely to come. Re-entering the crowded midsize SUV market won’t be easy for the alliance, but a clever mix of design, aggressive pricing and technology can help both Renault and Nissan develop a fan following.

Renault and Nissan’s Creta rival will likely be launched first, followed by the seven-seater versions. Renault and Nissan have together confirmed that both SUVs will be introduced in close succession, and this new product onslaught will kick off by late 2025 in India.
