Maruti Suzuki's Grand Vitara, launched on September 26, 2022, crossed the 2 lakh unit sales in just 22 months. By the end of June 2024, it had sold 199,550 units (see table below). The 450 units needed to hit the 2,00,000 domestic sales mark were likely achieved in early July 2024. This makes the Grand Vitara the fastest midsize SUV to reach this figure, beating the Hyundai Creta's record of achieving the milestone in 25 months.

  1. Maruti Grand Vitara accounts for 17 percent of Maruti’s UV sales
  2. Contributed 19 percent to total Nexa sales from launch till date
  3. Has been recalled thrice since launch on September 26, 2022

On September 19, 2023, we broke the news about the Maruti Grand Vitara clocking 1 lakh sales in just 12 months, setting a record as the fastest midsize SUV to achieve this milestone. Since then, the pace of sales has clearly increased, with the next 1,00,000 units sold in just 10 months.

Grand Vitara helps increase Maruti Suzuki’s market share

Despite entering a highly competitive and growing midsize SUV market bristling with well-entrenched rivals such as the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda Kushaq, MG Astor and cousin Toyota Hyryder, the Maruti Grand Vitara has carved a niche for itself. In FY2024, its inaugural full year of sales, it was the second best-selling midsize SUV (1,21,169 units, up 136 percent) after the Hyundai Creta (1,62,773 units, up 8.2 percent).

In the April-June 2024 quarter, Maruti Suzuki sold 1,63,130 UVs (SUVs and MPVs), securing a 25 percent market share, surpassing Mahindra (1,24,248 units/19 percent market share), Hyundai (1,00,745 units/15.6 percent market share), and Tata (1,00,526 units/15.5 percent market share). The Grand Vitara accounted for 27,066 units, representing 17 percent of Maruti's SUV and MPV sales in the first three months of FY2025. Clearly, this midsize SUV is rapidly expanding its sales footprint.

Maruti Grand Vitara contributes 19 percent to Nexa sales

The Grand Vitara continues to be a key contributor to Maruti Suzuki's premium Nexa channel, and has been one of the models that helped it achieve the 25 lakh unit milestone. Of the total 27,11,895 Nexa cars and SUVs the company sold by the end of June 2024, the Grand Vitara has contributed 1,99,550 units (7.35 percent) and is currently ranked third after long-established  Baleno and Ignis models. Of the total 10,56,038 Nexa cars and SUVs sold since FY2023 (when the SUV entered the market) till 2024 June end, the Grand Vitara’s share is a strong 19 percent.

Maruti Grand Vitara: CNG, export details, recalls

In January 2023, Maruti Suzuki, India’s CNG market leader, introduced the Grand Vitara CNG, expanding its CNG portfolio to 14 models. From January to June 2024, the company recorded retail sales of 159,031 units, marking a 34 percent increase from H1 2023 (1,18,903 units) and accounting for 57 percent of its total sales in CY2023. Currently, Maruti Suzuki holds a strong 66 percent share of the CNG PV market, with the Grand Vitara playing a key role among its contributing models.

In January 2023 only, the first batch of Made-in-India Grand Vitara was exported to Latin America from the Kamarajar Port, making it the brand's 17th export model. The Maruti Suzuki models with the highest export demand are the Dzire sedan, Swift, S Presso, Baleno hatchbacks and the Brezza SUV.

Since its launch, the Grand Vitara has seen three recalls. The largest was on January 24, 2023, for 11,177 units manufactured between August 8 and November 15, 2022 to inspect the rear seatbelt mounting brackets. The Grand Vitara’s first recall was on December 6, 2022, as part of a five-model inspection exercise to check the shoulder height adjuster assembly of the front row seat belts. The second one was on January 17, 2023, as part of a six-model, 17,000-unit recall to inspect and replace the airbag controller.
