Without knowing your budget, it's hard to know what to recommend, but strictly speaking, for your family of six, the best car around is the Toyota Innova Hycross Hybrid. It's the most spacious car this side of Rs. 50 lakh and comes with one of the most efficient hybrid powertrains. The interior is flexible, so you can reconfigure it to suit your specific needs, and being an MPV, getting in and out will not be too difficult for your parents further down the line. It's a Toyota, so reliability is a given, and maintenance costs are reasonable too. In the city, the hybrid powertrain will run mostly on electric power, giving you a refined and relaxing experience, and on the highway, there's enough punch, even with a full load of passengers. If this is outside your budget, however, consider the Kia Carens Clavis, which offers a great mix of features, space and flexibility for the money. Plus, with a wide choice of engines and gearboxes, you should find something that suits you.

While hybrids are a great option and do deliver maximum mileage, in your budget of Rs 20 lakh, you will only get a base model variant of the three hybrids in this price range, namely the Maruti Suzuki Victoris and Grand Vitara, and the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder. Hence, we would recommend going with a diesel, of which there are many options within your budget.If you want a larger vehicle, we would recommend the Kia Seltos diesel, which you will get in the mid-spec HTK (O) and HTX variants within your budget. It's a modern SUV with great space and comfort, and a lot of the latest features and tech. Its diesel engine is not the strongest, but it is very smooth and efficient, and can be had with a stutter-free torque converter automatic gearbox.If you don't mind a smaller car, go for the Mahindra XUV 3XO, whose diesel engine is even more powerful than the one in the Seltos. It will feel stronger out on the highway, helped by its smaller size and lighter weight. It's got a spacious cabin and a comfortable and stable ride that feels like an SUV from a segment above. Do note, however, that its boot is not that large, in case you travel with luggage frequently, and it uses an AMT-type automatic, which isn't very smooth. Best of all, however, you can get a fully loaded version within your budget.

There is no reason to cancel your booking and wait for a potential flex-fuel version. For your usage pattern, the Toyota Innova HyCross Hybrid ZX (O) already makes a lot of sense. It will primarily be used for weekend trips and long-distance family travel, while the Glanza continues to handle city duties.More importantly, there is no certainty that a flex-fuel Hycross will launch within the next 6-12 months. Even if Toyota does introduce one, the current strong hybrid is likely to remain the more efficient and refined option, especially in mixed driving conditions. The hybrid system is already proven, offers excellent fuel efficiency for a vehicle of this size and should continue to be highly desirable in the used car market.

Go for the Tata Safari petrol automatic. It comes closest to your Hexa’s big-car feel without falling foul of the 10-year diesel rule, and it keeps you well within Rs. 35 lakh budget for a well-equipped variant. You get proper 7-seat space, a calm ride, quiet cabin and that easy, long-legged highway feel your Hexa was good at. For an 80 km daily grind, the smooth petrol and light controls make the commute less tiring, and the active safety tech is a real bonus on those two big trips each year.If you’re in NCR, skipping diesel is the right call. Just be ready for higher fuel costs than your Hexa or a hybrid - that is the one real trade-off. If you want to rein in running costs, consider the strong hybrid versions of the Toyota Innova HyCross which may not have that strong SUV feel you are looking for, but is a very competent, well built and reliable 7 seater.

The Kia Seltos 1.5 Petrol IVT would be the recommendation here. Since this will be your wife's first automatic car and you'll both be sharing it for some time, ease of driving should be a key consideration. The Seltos' naturally aspirated petrol engine and IVT automatic combination is exceptionally smooth in city traffic, making it very beginner-friendly. It is also spacious, comfortable on long drives, comes with ISOFIX mounts and feels premium enough that you won't feel the need to upgrade immediately.The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder Mild Hybrid Automatic is another strong option. Its naturally aspirated petrol engine and torque-converter automatic are smooth and dependable, while Toyota's ownership experience is among the best in the business. The turbo-petrol engine offers strong performance, effortless overtaking ability and makes long highway commutes far more enjoyable than most naturally aspirated rivals.However, your usage pattern is quite demanding. Pick the BMW M2 Coupe. As a pure weekend toy around Bengaluru, it feels special every single drive - compact size for tight roads, rear-drive agility for the Nandi Hills twisties, and an engine-gearbox combo that rewards good drivers. You already have the Fortuner and the Windsor for space and chores, so the M2’s two-door body style should not be a problem. That said, the ride is firm, and the ground clearance is low, so tall speed breakers and steep ramps need care, and the rear seats are for short hops only.The 3 Series M340i is the easier car to live with and quicker in low-grip situations thanks to its all-wheel traction, and it rides a bit more comfortably over broken patches. The Skoda Kylaq Signature AT would be the recommendation here. Among the cars you've shortlisted, it offers the best balance of comfort, performance and long-distance ability. The rear seat is spacious enough for five adults on shorter journeys, the torque-converter automatic is smooth in city traffic, and the turbo-petrol engine feels effortless on highways. It also rides well and feels more substantial than the hatchbacks in your list.If rear-seat space is the absolute priority, then the Hyundai i20 Sportz IVT deserves consideration. It has one of the widest rear benches in the segment, a smooth CVT automatic and a very easy-going nature in Delhi traffic. However, it doesn't feel as robust or versatile as the Kylaq on longer highway drives.The Toyota Glanza V AMT is the efficiency champion and will likely be the cheapest to run, but the AMT gearbox is not as polished as the automatics in the Hyundai or Skoda. There aren't too many sedans left in the Rs 45-50 lakh price bracket, but the one that does remain represents superb value for money and fits most of your criteria. This is, of course, the Toyota Camry and will feel like an ideal upgrade from your Honda City. It's built around the same Japanese sensibilities of reliability, functionality, build quality and efficiency. It's incredibly well built, has a luxurious and comfortable interior with a spacious back seat, and being a strong hybrid, it's way more efficient than any other car of its size. Plus, with Toyota's famously reliable reputation, it will go on flawlessly for ages with minimal maintenance required. Its only shortcoming is that it isn't particularly fun to drive or tidy in its dynamics. For that, you'll have to stretch your budget by a few lakhs and get an Audi A4. If you want an SUV instead, there are plenty of great options like the Skoda Kodiaq and Volkswagen Tayron, or again, for a small stretch of the budget, the Audi Q3.
