After Skoda, the German brand Volkswagen is the second mainstream car from the VW Group to launch its cars and SUVs in India. Over the years, Volkswagen cars sold in the country have included the Polo, Vento, Touareg, Phaeton, Passat, and Jetta.

Volkswagen new car launch includes the Tayron and ID 4, which are expected to launch in late 2025. The upcoming Volkswagen electric car, the ID 4, will rival the BYD Sealion 7. At present, there are no Volkswagen 7 seater cars on sale in India.

I need to buy my second car purely for driving pleasure. Budget is within ₹25 lakh, and I definitely want an ICE petrol vehicle. Sedan, SUV, or MUV, anything works. Please advise.

Since driving pleasure is your main priority, you’ll appreciate the dynamics of a sedan. Consider the Volkswagen Virtus or the Skoda Slavia, both powered by a punchy 150hp, 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine.
The Volkswagen does have the advantage of being available with a 6-speed manual gearbox, which will be more engaging to drive. Alternatively, you could consider the Hyundai Verna, which gets a slightly more powerful engine (160hp, 1.5 turbo petrol), but it isn't as dynamically sorted as the VW or Skoda.

I want to upgrade my Swift ZXI. Which automatic car is the best option within a budget of ₹20 lakh?

There are plenty of options in your budget. If you want a sedan, your options include the Honda City, which comes with a CVT automatic. Other good options include the Hyundai Verna, Volkswagen Virtus, and Skoda Slavia, all offering two automatic gearbox choices.

Go for the City or the Verna with the CVT gearbox, as they’ll be more efficient than the others.

As for SUVs, you'll get most midsize SUVs in your budget. However, you can choose between the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, or Maruti Suzuki Victoris; all three offer a good blend of a refined driving experience, features, and fuel efficiency.

My family has grown since I bought my first car, a Hyundai Elite i20 Asta CVT. Now we’re six members: me, my wife, two kids, and two elders. We need two cars: one primarily driven by me and one for my wife. Our daily commute totals about 50 km across both vehicles, mostly within the city on highway-like routes. We also take 4-5 trips a year with the whole family. The combined budget for both cars is ₹50–55 lakh. I’m currently considering the Volkswagen Virtus GT Plus and waiting for the Mahindra XEV 7e (electric for experience & cost).

The Volkswagen Virtus GT is a fun choice, but being a sedan, getting in and out might not be the most convenient for the elderly. The Volkswagen Taigun GT offers a similar driving experience with the added advantage of higher seating.
As for the Mahindra XEV 7e, we’re yet to drive it, but if it’s similar to the XEV 9e, it should be a compelling package. We’ll be driving the XEV 7e soon, so stay tuned for our full review.

Virtus 1.0 AT (Top-End) vs Elevate ZX CVT — Which One to Pick? 🚗💭 After months of research, I’m torn between the Volkswagen Virtus 1.0L AT (top trim) and the Honda Elevate ZX CVT. I live in Bangalore, mostly drive on weekends, and do 3–4 highway trips a year to Kerala. I love driving, and I’m upgrading from a Grand i10 petrol. Family of three (two adults + one kid). Looking for advice on: Which feels better to drive on city roads and highways Ride comfort, refinement, and family practicali

Between the two, if you enjoy driving, the Volkswagen Virtus is the better choice. It’s more engaging to drive, and its turbo-petrol engine offers stronger performance. It’s also spacious, with comfortable seating for four and a large boot. The only drawback, based on your priorities, is refinement; the Virtus’s 1.0-litre engine is a three-cylinder unit compared to the Honda Elevate’s four-cylinder. However, refinement isn’t bad on its own and isn’t really a deal-breaker.

I’m planning to upgrade to a sedan with a good seating height and without a clutch. My monthly usage is about 500 km in the city, which has heavy traffic and many potholes. My priorities are mileage and driving comfort. I’m not sure if an EV would be a good choice. I considered the Tata Harrier EV, but dropped the idea after learning about multiple issues. My budget is around ₹25 lakh.

The top-spec Honda City petrol-automatic is the only sedan that's comfortable and will also return decent fuel efficiency for city use. With a monthly usage of just 500 km, opting for the Honda City hybrid doesn't make much sense, and there are currently no EV sedans available for ₹25 lakh.
The turbo sedans like the Hyundai Verna, Skoda Slavia, and Volkswagen Virtus, will be more engaging to drive, but expect single digit fuel efficiency in heavy traffic.

I’m planning to buy a third car but torn between the Mercedes GLA (luxury) and the Škoda Kodiaq (premium and larger). I already have a Honda City 5th Gen and a Toyota Hycross Hybrid. Which one makes more sense to buy?

A Skoda Kodiaq is better equipped, more spacious, and it is more powerful than the Mercedes GLA petrol. A Volkswagen Tiguan R Line is also something you can consider, which is a bit sportier to drive than the Kodiaq, and now with huge discounts, is a tempting option.

Hello Team, I need advice on my next car purchase. My budget is around ₹18 lakh, and we are a family of five. Most driving will be in the city, with occasional highway trips once every six months. I prefer an SUV, not a sedan. I have test-driven the VW Taigun and Honda Elevate, both automatics, as I need an automatic. The Elevate offers more features, while the Taigun 1.5 offers more power. Please guide me on which would be the better buy.

The Taigun 1.5 TSI DSG might not fit into your ₹18 lakh (on-road) budget. The Honda Elevate, price ranges between ₹13.08 lakh and ₹19.19 lakh (on-road in Mumbai), which falls within your range.

If you liked the drive experience, you should definitely go for it. The Elevate is a very comfortable car with good driving manners. Its engine delivers strong performance, so you will never feel short of power, even when traveling with five people on the highway.

I am planning to buy a car in the ₹12 lakh range and was considering the Kylaq. However, I realized it’s a bit smaller, so I can stretch my budget up to ₹16 lakh and am considering the Kushaq or Taigun if a decent variant fits in that range. We are a family of four (husband, wife, and two kids) and prefer an automatic.

Within your budget, you can go for the Volkswagen Taigun 1.0 AT Highline variant. Unfortunately, within the same budget, the Skoda Kushaq Onyx variant is your only option, and it isn’t as well-equipped as the Taigun. You would miss features like a reversing camera, automatic headlamps, and a larger touchscreen.

I have shortlisted three compact SUVs: Honda Elevate Automatic, Taigun GT Automatic, and Hyryder. My car will mostly be used in city conditions in Delhi, with two or three long-distance highway trips (about 1,000 km each) in a year. City commuting will average around 50 km daily. I want a good combination of safety, performance, and mileage. Which of these three cars should I choose? Please also suggest if there are any better options available.

Out of your listed options, the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder strong hybrid best fits your requirements. Since you drive mainly in the city, its efficiency of over 20 kmpl will appeal to you.
Note that its boot space is slightly compromised due to the battery under the floor, which could matter on highway trips. If you prioritize safety and performance over efficiency, the Volkswagen Taigun GT offers more value.

Which is the best car in terms of safety, reliability, driveability, and fuel efficiency? The options I am considering are the Thar, Taigun, and Kushaq. Also, is it okay to go for a diesel car?

The Mahindra Thar is a bit of an outlier among these three options. It’s the only 3-door model, the only one built on a tough body-on-frame chassis, and the only one that comes with a diesel engine. Going for a diesel SUV is absolutely fine, in fact, the lack of diesel options in the Taigun and Kushaq petrol variants can be a disadvantage if you value fuel efficiency and torque for highway or off-road driving.

If the Thar is going to be your second or third car that will be used occasionally for off-road trips or wilderness drives, then it’s a compelling choice, and the 1.5-litre diesel is significantly cheaper too.

However, in terms of refinement, comfort, driveability, and on-road sophistication, the Volkswagen Taigun and Skoda Kushaq are far superior. They are smoother, more comfortable, and easier to drive daily, making them better all-rounders for city and highway use.
