The Rumion is Toyota’s smallest MPV in India, sitting below the likes of the Innova Crysta and Innova Hycross. It is a badge-engineered version of the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. The Toyota Rumion price in India starts at ₹9.79 lakh and goes up ₹14.21 lakh, (ex-showroom). At this price point, it rivals its own siblings, the Maruti Ertiga and the XL6, as well as the Kia Carens and Carens Clavis. The Rumion is identical to its Maruti counterpart and that isn’t a bad thing at all, because the Ertiga is an extremely competent, practical and capable people mover.

The Toyota Rumion is available in 8 variants. The Toyota Rumion is available with a sole 1.5-litre, four-cylinder engine that can be had in both petrol and CNG spec. With petrol, this engine produces 103hp and 137Nm of torque, and is offered with either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. In CNG spec, the engine produces 88hp and 121Nm, and only comes with a manual gearbox.

On the equipment front, the Rumion 1.5 Petrol V AT comes equipped halogen projector headlamps, dual-tone interior, 2nd-row centre armrest, remote keyless entry, 12V power sockets in the first and second row, electrically adjustable wing mirrors with integrated indicators, bottle holders in all rows, paddle shifters (AT only), automatic AC, 7-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, wireless Android auto and Apple CarPlay, front fog lamps, connected car technology, 15-inch alloy wheels, engine push start/stop, cruise control and auto headlamps.

As standard, all variants of the Rumion MPV come with six airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), hill hold assist, TPMS, ISOFIX child seat mounts (second row), seat belt reminder (All seats), rear parking sensor and a rear camera.

Toyota Rumion highlights

-          The Rumion is the most affordable Toyota MPV in India, with prices starting from at ₹ 9.79 lakh for the 1.5 Petrol E.

-          The Toyota Rumion is only available in a 7-seater configuration unlike its sibling the Maruti Ertiga, which also gets a 6-seater version in the form of the XL6.

-          The Toyota Rumion has a claimed mileage of 20.11kpl for the petrol-MT and 20.51kpl for the petrol-AT. Meanwhile, the CNG variant returns a claimed mileage of 26.11km/kg.

-          The Toyota Rumion comes equipped with six airbags as standard, but it does not have a safety rating as it has not been tested by either Global NCAP or Bharat NCAP.

-          The Toyota Rumion has a boot space of 209 litres with all rows up, expandable to 550 litres with the third row folded.

-          All trims of the Toyota Rumion get both manual and automatic gearbox options, but only the base 1.5 Petrol E trim comes equipped with the factory-fitted CNG kit.

-          The main differentiating factor between the Rumion and the Ertiga is that Toyota offers a higher standard warranty compared to what Maruti offers, apart from a different brand experience.

-          Except for some minor differences to the soft plastic part and use of colours, the Rumion and Ertiga re virtually identical to each other.

Exterior Design And Engineering

7

The Rumion shares its body panels with the Ertiga, but Toyota gives it a signature front grille with chrome accents and a redesigned bumper. It also gets dual-tone 15-inch alloys, while the rear remains largely unchanged except for Toyota badges.

Interior Space And Comfort

9

The cabin layout is identical to the Ertiga, which means it’s spacious, comfortable, and practical. The second-row seats recline and slide, and access to the third row is easy. Even the last row is usable for adults, although headroom is limited. The airy cabin and dedicated rear AC vents add to the comfort.

Performance And Refinement

7

The 1.5-litre, 103hp petrol engine with mild-hybrid tech is refined and responsive at city speeds. The 6-speed torque converter automatic shifts smoothly but feels lazy to downshift. Paddle shifters help regain some control. On highways, performance is modest, and engine noise becomes more noticeable when pushed.

Mileage / Range And Efficiency

8

Real-world efficiency from this powertrain is decent. In similar cars, we've seen city mileage around 9.2kpl and highway efficiency up to 17kpl. An auto stop-start system helps save fuel in traffic. The CNG variant is only offered in the base S trim.

Ride Comfort And Handling

8

Ride quality is comfortable, especially at low and cruising speeds. Vertical movements are noticeable over undulations, especially with a full load. Still, the Rumion feels composed, and the steering has more natural return than many Heartect-based models.

Features And Safety

6

While safety is well covered with four airbags, ESP, and hill-start assist, feature content is basic. It gets halogen projector lamps, a 7-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and a rear AC blower. However, higher trims don’t offer many added conveniences.

Value For Money

9

The Rumion is priced between ₹10.67 lakh and ₹13.96 lakh (ex-showroom), making it ₹70,000–80,000 costlier than the Ertiga. However, it offers the same strong fundamentals: space, practicality, comfort, and reliability. If you value the Toyota badge and slightly better after-sales perception, the premium might be justifiable.

Toyota Rumion Mileage

The Toyota Rumion has an ARAI-claimed average mileage of 20.51kpl with the manual gearbox and 20.11kpl with the automatic gearbox. Meanwhile, the CNG variant is claimed to return 26.11km/kg.

We haven’t tested the Toyota Rumion for its real-world mileage, yet. However, the Maruti Suzuki XL6 with the same powertrain and similar weight achieved 9.20kpl in the city and 17kpl on the highway in our fuel efficiency tests, thus giving you a fair idea of what you can expect from the Rumion in the real world.

Toyota Rumion Images

Check out the Toyota Rumion images in the gallery, which highlight its MPV design, spacious interior and a sizable boot.

The Toyota Rumion MPV shares most body panels with its Maruti cousin, hence you will have to look closely to spot the differences. Few cosmetic enhancements reflect Toyota’s design DNA, the most prominent being the front grille and bumper design. The familiarities continue inside with an interior design, layout and even colour scheme identical to the Maruti Ertiga; only the Toyota logo on the steering gives away its new identity.

The interior of the Rumion is finished in beige with a contrasting faux wood trim on the dashboard and a few black highlights for the top part. The seats also come with beige upholstery.

Toyota Rumion FAQs

Yes, the Rumion is a value-for-money MPV in India, thanks to its feature list, spacious cabin and frugal engines.

The Rumion can accommodate seven occupants, but the third row is best suited to children or shorter adults on longer journeys. For occasional use, however, the third row adds useful flexibility.

Yes, both models are built together by Maruti, and the Rumion is supplied to Toyota thanks to a joint venture agreement between the two brands.

The Rumion focuses on affordability, fuel efficiency, and low ownership costs. The Kia Carens offers more features, stronger engine options, and a more premium cabin, but it also comes at a higher price.

The Rumion delivers a comfortable ride quality at city and highway speeds, but vertical movements are noticeable over undulations, especially with a full load.

Both MPVs are exactly the same, save for minor styling differences. The decision comes down to which carmaker's aftersales experience you prefer, although it's worth noting that the Rumion is more expensive than the Ertiga. The Rumion also gets only one CNG variant, while the Ertiga is offered in two.

indly suggest whether I should choose a new Toyota Innova Crysta GX Plus, a pre-owned Toyota Innova Crysta from TUCO Toyota, a Toyota Rumion, or Maruti Suzuki Ertiga for tourism use, family travel, and long-term ownership? I am confused. Kindly guide.

Verified
18w

You haven't mentioned your budget, but since you're considering a brand new Toyota Innova Crysta GX Plus variant, it is safe to assume that you're comfortable spending close to Rs 25 lakhs (on-road). Since this vehicle will be used for commercial purposes, it would be better to buy a new car to start with. You will be able to claim tax refunds as well as benefit from asset depreciation in your company's books. Additionally, you get the peace of mind of a new vehicle, and the backing of a company warranty. To address the second part of your question, the Maruti Ertiga VXI MT or Toyota Rumion S MT costs half as much as an Innova Crysta GX Plus, resulting in a tremendous saving. In fact, you can even buy two cars for the price of one Innova. Both, Ertiga and Rumion are equally reliable. And even though these are petrol-powered, they're quite fuel efficient, and their maintenance costs will be lower than that of the diesel Crysta. Between the Ertiga and Rumion, even though they're the same, the Toyota is a bit more expensive, hence purely from a savings perspective, the Ertiga makes more sense.Overall, all three cars you've listed are reliable, dependable, and are backed by the widespread, strong network of Toyota and Maruti. It is up to you to decide whether you want to buy a new Crysta GX or if you're happy to buy one, or even examples of the Maruti Ertiga and Toyota Rumion.Whichever you pick, these are cars you can't go wrong with.

I need a 7-seater for 80% city driving. I really liked the Mahindra Bolero Neo during the test drive because of its tall seating position and bulky design, but it is available only with a diesel engine. Should I purchase it for city run, despite potential DPF issues, or should I go for the Maruti Ertiga or something else?

Verified
6d

Go with the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga for your 80% city use. You get petrol or CNG, so no DPF drama in short, stop-go runs, and there’s an easy automatic for traffic. It’s lighter to steer, rides more comfortably over broken roads, and its third row is actually usable for adults on short trips. The Bolero Neo certainly has its appeal with its commanding seating position and rugged character, but its diesel and ladder-frame make it a harder life in the city. Lots of short trips can trigger frequent DPF regens, and the last row is side-facing, cramped, and doesn't have seatbelts, so it's not great for family safety or comfort. It’s manual-only and heavier to drive, too.If you still want more style and space without diesel worries, the Kia Carens petrol is a nice middle path. Very easy in town, flexible 7-seat cabin, with an even roomier third row. The Toyota Rumion is basically an Ertiga with the Toyota badge and similar strengths, so buy whichever gives you the better deal or service comfort.

I currently own a Maruti Baleno Delta (2020) manual. I have been planning to upgrade for quite some time. My main requirements include an automatic transmission car under 25 lakh (on-road) for Hyderabad. Since this car will also be driven by my wife, who is not well versed with manual transmission and hence, am looking to upgrade to an automatic. I drive for pleasure and comfort in both city and on highway. We are 6 members in our family and 6+ seater SUV would be perfect to go on trips together without losing on comfort. My daily running involves office commute, few highway runs to airport with once a month outstation trip. These together contribute to about 2000 km monthly running. I am also confused between fuel options as I am currently using petrol manual which gives around a satisfactory 15kpl mileage. I can consider diesel, but since I don’t have frequent highway trips, I am not confident of going through the hassle of higher maintenance as well as def and filter maintenance. I am more inclined towards hybrid and EV, however only concern with EV is range anxiety during outstation trips. Since Hybrid does not give mileage advantage due to ethanol blending in petrol, it also seems concerning. Please help me make a decision considering above factors.

Pick the Kia Carens petrol automatic with captain seats. It is the easiest way to get a true 6-seater that your wife will find simple to drive, yet it feels calmer and stronger than your Baleno when you load all six and head out on the highway. A well-specced mid variant sits within Rs. 25 lakh on-road Hyderabad, gives you a smooth auto, light controls, a genuinely usable third row, and still some boot for airport runs.Choose petrol and stop worrying about DEF and regen cycles. With your mix of city and a monthly trip, expect low-teens in the city and mid-teens on the highway if you drive gently. Strong-hybrids and EVs that make sense as 6 or 7 seaters simply do not exist in this budget right now; mild-hybrid MPVs like XL6 or Rumion save a little fuel, not a lot, and feel weaker with six on board. One point to keep in mind, the Carens’ dual-clutch can feel a bit hesitant in bumper-to-bumper and prefers smooth throttle. If most of your commute is crawling traffic, the Maruti XL6 6AT is simpler and silkier, just slower on the highway with a full family and less plush inside.

I’m currently driving a 2017 Maruti Baleno and looking to upgrade to an MPV for more space and comfort. The XL6 Automatic is on top of my list because of Maruti’s low running costs, reliability, and servicing. Which variant is suited for Bangalore usage at a reasonable price? I want the best balance of features vs value. What are other options - I’m specifically looking for an AT MPV/7-seater with low maintenance, good cabin quality, and strong after-sales. Does anything beat Maruti here, or is XL6 still the best bet? What is your opinion on second-hand? My budget is 15 lakhs. What is also your take on a second hand?

Verified

Go for a lightly used 2022-on Maruti XL6 Zeta Automatic, and you’ll get the best mix of comfort, features and Maruti peace-of-mind while staying near your Rs. 15 lakh cap in Bengaluru. The 6-speed auto is smooth in traffic, captain seats make second-row comfort a big step up from your Baleno, and running costs stay friendly. New-for-new, the Zeta is the value pick; the Alpha mainly adds nice-to-haves. The catch is that the XL6 is a 6-seater, and with all rows up, the boot is small. Also, with a full load it feels just okay on highways, not brisk. If you want seven seats, look at the Maruti Ertiga Automatic or Toyota Rumion Automatic. Same proven hardware, low upkeep, wide service network, and better third-row access. Cabin quality is simpler than XL6, but perfectly usable. In Bengaluru, both autos usually creep over Rs. 15 lakh on-road, so used makes sense here too.If you must buy a new car under Rs. 15 lakh, the Renault Triber automatic is the only realistic seven-seater, but it feels a size smaller, and the engine feels weak with seven onboard. After-sales is also patchy and not as strong as Maruti-Toyota.So yes, XL6 still fits your brief best. Buy a good used, low km, 2022-on Zeta AT, and you’re sorted.

I currently own a 2012 Hyundai i20, which I mainly use for office commuting and city driving of around 70 km per day. We are a family of six, and I am now planning to upgrade to a more spacious and comfortable car with a budget of around ₹14.5 lakh on-road. My primary requirements are: Comfortable ride quality and good suspension Spacious cabin with enough room for family use Powerful and effective air conditioning Better engine performance than my current i20 Good overall comfort for both city and highway driving Some modern features and convenience equipment would also be appreciated

Daily 70 km in the city, and a family of six, point you to a 3-row people mover within your budget. The Kia Carens Clavis 1.5 petrol HTE EX. It rides comfortably on rough city roads, so you and your parents won’t feel tossed around. The second row can be slid forward and backwards to balance room for passengers, and even the third row is usable for adults on short trips. The air-con is powerful, with roof vents helping with cooling. The engine is smooth and quiet in town, and the light controls make stop-and-go driving easy. You also get useful features even in the lower trims, but sadly, essentials like a rear wiper and defogger are only on higher-spec models. Two trade-offs to note: with all three rows up, the boot is small, and with six or seven on board, you will need a lower gear for quick moves. If you prefer a simpler, easier-to-own choice, the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga VXi/ZXi is a close second, with a strong AC and easy-to-use nature. Toyota Rumion offers the same package with Toyota service support. Overall, the Carens Clavis lines up best for comfort, space and cooling at this price.

My current vehicle is a Hyundai Xcent, and I want to sell it and buy a 6 or 7-seater car. My budget is Rs 10-15 lakh. Which car would you suggest?

Verified
8w

Within Rs 10-15 lakh, the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga is the best all rounder. It gives the most usable third row at this price, so adults can sit there for short to medium drives, and the ride stays comfortable over broken roads. The light steering and good all-round visibility make it easy to handle in traffic, and when you fold the last row you get a big boot for airport runs or luggage-heavy trips. Its got excellent fuel economy, and in your budget, you should be able to get a top spec version and even an automatic gearbox if you like. You could also try Toyota's version of the Ertiga - the Rumion - or if you want captain's chairs in the middle row, there is the Maruti Suzuki XL6.Some things to note: with seven on board the petrol will need a few more gear changes on hills, and you only get the option of a single petrol engine or a CNG version. Another great option is the Kia Carens Clavis, which is big on space, practicality, comfort and quality. However, at your budget, you will only get lower variants and the basic 1.5-litre petrol engine, and will have to spend more to get the turbo petrol or diesel versions. If you're able to up your budget by a few lakhs, it is definitely worth considering.

Which is the best seven-seater car in the ₹15 lakh bracket? My usage is occasional long drives and limited city usage.

Verified
12w

With occasional highway trips, limited city use, and a cap of around ₹15 lakh, the Kia Carens Clavis HTE EX 1.5 NA manual fits your needs best. It is a true seven-seater that is easy to live with and stays within budget. Why it works for you: the petrol engine is smooth and quiet, and the light steering makes it simple to handle in the city. The middle row is roomy and comfortable, and roof vents help keep the cabin cool for everyone on hot days. Even the third row of this Kia car is surprisingly comfortable for adults.Know the trade-off: With all seven occupants on board and luggage, you will need to plan overtakes on the highway. Also, the boot space with all three rows up is just 216 litres, so for longer trips, you may need to fold the last row.If you don’t plan on using the third row often, then the Maruti Ertiga or Toyota Rumion are reliable picks. Maruti also has the largest dealer network if that is a concern for you.Overall, for your use and budget, the Carens Clavis lines up best.

My yearly running is 15,000 km, mainly on highways. I am searching for a car that provides good safety and very comfortable rear seats for long journeys, as I have elders who travel with me. There are quite a few options within your budget, but we'll trim the list down to the Mahindra XUV 3XO, Maruti Suzuki Brezza and Maruti Suzuki Ertiga (and its twin, the Toyota Rumion). The Mahindra XUV 3XO is a tough compact SUV with a 5-star Bharat NCAP safety rating. It is quite roomy for its size with ample space at the back. Good ride comfort is also a plus. Punchy engines also make it well-suited to highway drives. The Maruti Suzuki Brezza isn't as punchy as the Mahindra XUV 3XO, but it has very comfortable rear seats, good ride comfort, and is very easy to get into and out of, which your parents will appreciate. If you are open to a larger vehicle, the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga VXi (or higher spec) ZXi is an option. The large rear doors and elevated seating position make getting in and out very comfortable. The large rear windows, backrest adjust, and soft seat cushioning are other aspects your parents will like. Performance isn't great, but power is enough for relaxed highway drives.

Verified

There are quite a few 7-seater options under Rs 15 lakh, and it's hard to pinpoint one without knowing your specific requirements. Thus, we would recommend the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga or its sister car, the Toyota Rumion, as they are very good all-rounders. The third row is quite spacious, and moreover at your budget you will get a decently equipped one too.

Respected members, we are a family of five, and I want to buy an SUV. My driving will be about 70% city and 30% highway. I am looking for a car with good fuel economy and an automatic transmission. Which one should I buy, considering both 5-seater and 7-seater options?

Verified
25w

Since you are a family of 5 and open to the idea of a 7-seater, we would recommend opting for a 7-seater, as every member of your family can sit in comfort. We would suggest you look at the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga or its sister car, the Toyota Rumion, as they offer a fairly spacious third row of seats and are powered by an efficient 1.5-litre petrol engine. The ride is also very good, and at highway speeds, it's stable. Though over undulating roads, it does have some vertical movement at the rear, but it's never excessive.
