The Tata Safari SUV is the reincarnation of the iconic Safari nameplate in India, which was relaunched in February 2021 in India. The Tata car is priced from ₹14.66 lakh for the entry-level Smart 7 seat 2.0 Diesel trim, ex-showroom. The fully-loaded Accomplished X + Stealth Dark 6 seat 2.0 Diesel AT variant is priced at ₹25.96 lakh, also ex-showroom.

Between the Tata Safari and the Mahindra XUV700, it’s the Mahindra car that we would recommend. It is more comfortable, has strong engines, offers a more refined driving experience and has better features.
The Safari scores well on design, feels a bit tougher over bad sections and has the more spacious third row, but all things considered, the Mahindra XUV700 is better. It might be worth waiting for a few months, however, as the XUV700 facelift is just around the corner.

The Tata Safari and Mahindra XUV700 are tough SUVs, and while both are well-equipped, the Tata car is more comfortable than the Mahindra car for passengers seated in the third row. Meanwhile, the XUV700 is a lot smoother and more refined than the Tata Safari. If you are picking between these two, we'd suggest waiting for the heavily updated XUV700, expected in the first quarter of 2026.

It is expected to retain its wide selection of variants, which includes 5-, 6- and 7-seat versions, petrol and diesel, manual and automatic, as well as 2WD and AWD.
In your budget, you should be able to find something in the middle of the range. This is a big reason why it is preferred over the Tata Safari, which currently only comes in 6- and 7-seat guises, and only with a diesel engine, and is a little more expensive than the Mahindra, spec for spec.
However, the Tata Safari petrol version is due for a launch in December 2025, with a 170hp, 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine, which should provide more choice to buyers, and could be worth considering. However, there will still be no AWD version.
