I have just learned to drive and am buying my first car. My usage will be about 30 km daily in the city and one 500 km (one-way) trip each quarter, mostly on the highway. My priorities are safety, then cabin comfort (good seats, rear AC vents), and then mileage. Diesel is not an option. I’m deciding between the Mahindra 3XO and the Tata Nexon and am leaning toward the Nexon Pure+ S CNG. Please advise.

If you've got your heart set on the Tata Nexon iCNG, go for it. It is a very practical car, and the variant that you've selected spells good value for money.

The turbo-petrol-CNG combination is quite smooth, and performance is respectable too. Do keep in mind that if your daily commute includes frequent stop-and-go traffic, city efficiency could be on the lower side - around 13.4km/kg; however, on the open road, you could easily achieve around 24km/kg.

I am a police officer and want to buy an SUV with a budget of around ₹11/12 lakh. My job involves some rough driving, and about 80 percent of my driving is on the highway. I plan to keep the vehicle for at least 5-7 years without selling it. I want a diesel car with good mileage, and my daily running is 50/60 km.

Given your requirements for rugged and tough suspension, the Mahindra Bolero Neo will be a good option to consider. It has a torquey diesel engine that has good power delivery, and thanks to the rear-wheel drive layout, it is a bit better in hilly areas as well. The N10 (O) variant will fit in your budget and gets a decent kit like a reversing camera, cruise control and a 9-inch infotainment touchscreen.
The other option that is good over rough roads and highways is the Tata Nexon diesel in the Pure Plus variant. It has more power and is more modern-looking, but it isn't as tough as the Bolero, and in this price range, you won't get many features. Also, its front-wheel drive layout puts it at a disadvantage when it comes to driving uphill and in challenging terrain.

My budget is up to 13 lakh. I am looking for an SUV with comfort, safety, and mileage as priorities. Can you please suggest something?

Since your requirements are safety, comfort and efficiency, a diesel compact SUV would be the best bet. The Tata Nexon is a good option as it offers a very comfortable ride, is high on safety, and the diesel engine with the manual gearbox offers good efficiency as well.
The Creative variant is our pick, which gets you decent levels of features at a reasonable price.

Hi. I own a 2017 TUV300 T6 Plus (9-seater), and I’m looking to upgrade. My requirements are- solid safety, ample space for 4-5 passengers with luggage (a roof carrier is an option), good driving ergonomics on bad roads and rough terrain (not necessarily 4x4), reasonable running and maintenance costs, and a relatively smaller vehicle. The T6 Plus is a beast and becomes difficult to manage on narrow rural roads, so I want something more practical.

Considering all your requirements, the Tata Nexon would be a good option to consider. It has strong safety with a 5-star crash test rating, a roomy cabin for 5 passengers and a big boot as well.

The driving ergonomics are good too, with a light steering and smooth powertrains and should you opt for the diesel, you can expect low running costs as well. The Nexon is a sub-four-meter SUV, so it has a small footprint, but the ride and suspension cope very well over bad and broken roads.

Hi team, I purchased a Tata Nexon Creative+S (manual) 2023 model in December 2024 due to discounts. I recently drove the AMT variant of the Nexon (top-end) from Ooty to Masinagudi and back, and completely fell in love with the ease of driving it. Now I only want an automatic. I want to upgrade my vehicle and, with the advent of the Sierra, new Seltos, new 7XO, and the petrol Adventure+ Safari, what should I choose? Mostly the city use and highway once a month.

Since you are familiar and happy with your Tata Nexon, it's probably a good idea to stick with Tata Motors and check out the new Tata Sierra, which is launching tomorrow. It is a size and segment up on the Nexon, so it should feel like a considerable upgrade. This Tata car is also expected to come with larger 1.5-litre petrol engines, naturally aspirated and turbocharged, although the 1.5-litre diesel engine is expected to be the same.
The Mahindra XUV700 or XUV 7XO facelift is expected to gain a lot of tech from the XEV 9e and 9s, including a triple-screen infotainment system, but that aside, it should largely be the same.
Similarly, the Tata Safari petrol will gain the same 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine as the Sierra, but should otherwise be the same.
The new Kia Seltos is, for now, an unknown quantity, but it is expected to grow in size, as well as tech, which also likely means a jump in price. Hence, given most of your usage is in the city, we recommend going with the Sierra, as it will be a big enough upgrade without having to get an overly large SUV.

My monthly running is around 1,600 km, and I’m torn between getting a Victoris CNG or a Tata Nexon EV. Which one is a better buy considering running cost, maintenance, and long-term value?

Choosing between a CNG and an EV is largely dependent on your driving environment. If you are driving predominantly in the city, an EV would be a lot more affordable and convenient.

However, if your driving includes highways and out-of-station trips, an EV presents several challenges, such as charging time, waiting, and uncertainty about charger functionality.

A CNG would be a better buy if you frequently drive out of the city, where chargers are not frequent. If so, the Tata Nexon CNG would be a better option.

While the Maruti Victoris is larger in size, the Nexon has more features and equipment for a lesser price. The dual-cylinder design on the Nexon results in just as much boot space as the Victoris, and the CNG tank capacity is more too.

What also helps the Nexon is the more powerful engine, a 6-speed manual gearbox and a better-equipped cabin with panoramic sunroof, 360-degree camera, a larger touchscreen and better audio.

The Fearless Plus variant will offer a well-rounded package

Hi, I am a regular reader of your page. Your suggestions are excellent. I want to buy a 5-seater diesel car. My running is around 1,500 km per month, and my budget is Rs 12-15 lakh. Is the Tata Nexon diesel AMT a good option?

While the Tata Nexon AMT is a good choice, the Kia Sonet would be a better buy. It has a nicer, well-finished interior, the infotainment and touchscreen interface is a lot better, and the overall quality is nicer.
The diesel engine, too, is more refined, and the torque converter automatic gearbox is smoother than the AMT. You also get more equipment and kit, and Kia's aftersales is better than what Tata offers.
The downsides are space in the rear is not as much as the Nexon, but if that is not a high priority for you, the Kia Sonet diesel is a very strong option worth considering. The HTX variant in particular.

Hi Autocar team, need your expert suggestion. I have a 5-year-old petrol Nexon Automatic (XZA+). I'm fed up with the regular mechanical faults (one or another) and am now looking to change my car to another automatic. My preferences are safety, low maintenance, reliability, fuel economy, good interior, and comfort . I have a stretched budget of 12-13 lakhs for the automatic gearbox. Which car should I buy?

Since you are coming from a Tata Nexon, we'd recommend you narrow down your choices to the VXI AT variant of the Maruti Suzuki Brezza and the G Turbo AT variant of the Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor.
Both options are fuel efficient, pack in all the safety features, and come with the peace of mind associated with their respective brands. The Brezza is a bit more spacious, while the Taisor offers stronger performance.

My budget is ₹11 lakh on-road in Delhi. I need a reliable petrol car for long-term use, suitable for highways and hilly terrain. It should seat five adults comfortably, have good boot space, low NVH levels, and feel solid and robust. I’d prefer the engine to stay under 2,500 rpm at 100–110 kmph. I’m open to hatchbacks or sub-compact SUVs. Please advise.

The Tata Nexon fits your requirements for its space for 5 adults, decent boot, strong turbo-petrol engine, and six gears; however, engine revs while cruising will be quite low.
A Mahindra XUV 3XO is also a good option, although the Nexon's boot is larger.

I don’t understand what to choose while looking for a new car that will be used in the city as well as on the highway (the home to office is 90 km both ways). I am confused between the Tata Nexon and the Curvv. I find the Curvv stylish, but it doesn’t come with a CNG model, which is the main difference causing the confusion. I’m also not sure why I don’t see the Curvv on the road as much as the Nexon.

As you’ve correctly pointed out, the Tata Nexon is your only real option if you want a CNG version, unlike the Tata Curvv. Considering your running and requirements, choosing a CNG variant makes a lot of sense. While the Curvv is stylish and stands out on the road, the main reason it hasn’t done as well as the Nexon is its pricing and positioning.
Since the Tata Curvv is over 4 metres long, it misses out on the tax benefits the Nexon enjoys, making it around Rs 3 to 4 lakh more expensive. Apart from the distinctive exterior and larger boot, it does not feel like a step up in terms of driving experience, rear seat comfort, cabin quality or practicality.
The Curvv also faces strong competition from cars like the Hyundai Creta, which offer better engine and gearbox options and feel more premium.
If you are looking for a CNG car in the Curvv’s price bracket, we strongly suggest considering the Maruti Suzuki Victoris CNG. It is well priced, the CNG tank is neatly placed under the boot floor, so boot space is less compromised, and it has also scored a 5 star rating in Bharat NCAP.
