6 Skoda cars in India

Skoda Auto was one of the first brands from the Volkswagen Group to officially sell cars in India. The Skoda Octavia was the first product from the brand that was introduced back in early 2000s. Skoda India sold cars like the Superb, Yeti, Rapid, Fabia, Karoq and the Yeti in India.

The Skoda Kylaq is the brand’s newest launch in India, and it rivals the Kia Syros, Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue and the Maruti Brezza. Skoda also sells the Kushaq SUV, which shares its platform with the VW Taigun, and rivals the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and the Maruti Grand Vitara in India. The Slavia sedan, a sister product to the Volkswagen Virtus, rivals the Hyundai Verna and Honda City. Skoda India currently only sells petrol cars, but the brand has plans to launch petrol-hybrid, diesel and EVs in the future.

Upcoming Skoda car launches this year include the Elroq EV, next-gen Superb and the Skoda Octavia RS.

My budget is 15 lakhs and i want to buy an automatic mid size SUV which i can use in the city and for inter-state travels on the highway. My expectations are good acceleration, comfortable seats and good fuel mileage.

The Honda Elevate V CVT is a good option with very comfortable seats and strong acceleration, but its fuel efficiency isn't its strong suit. You can also consider the VW Taigun or Skoda Kushaq, both with a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine and 6-speed automatic transmission. Do keep in mind, though, that Turbocharged petrol engines are very sensitive to driving style and ambient conditions. If you drive sedately (gently) with less traffic, you will get impressive fuel efficiency. On the other hand, if you drive aggressively or in heavy traffic, the fuel efficiency could drop to single digits.

What are the options to a Jeep Compass as a replacement purchase? I have a budget of 35-40 lacs but wondering if there is any product other than Jeep Compass/Meridian facelift that I should consider

The Jeep Compass is known for its fantastic ride and handling balance. However, replacing it with the Meridian or the new Compass may make little sense, as both feel dated and less refined compared to rivals. A better alternative could be the Mahindra XUV700, a more refined and polished SUV that offers excellent driving dynamics at a lower price. Other worthy ICE upgrades include the Skoda Kodiaq or a heavily discounted VW Tiguan R-Line, though these require a higher budget.

I want to buy a new car in Delhi. My budget is under 20 lakhs. Want a safe and super fun-to-drive, reliable vehicle. My daily drive is 20 km per day in the city with a monthly highway drive to my home in Bareilly. Total max run is 1500 km. As I'm a doctor studying and working in Delhi, after two years, I will return to my hometown, and my commute on the city's highway will be reduced to half.

With a budget of around Rs 20 lakh on-road, you could look at the VW Virtus GT Plus 1.5 with a manual gearbox or the Skoda Slavia Sportline 1.5 DSG (automatic). Both are equally fun to drive.

If you are open to the hatchback body style, you could even consider a Hyundai i20 N Line either with a manual or DCT (auto). Not only is the i20 fun-to-drive, but you'll also end up with tidy savings, as this hatchback is well within your budget.

Hello Autocar, I am an avid follower of your team, especially the senior editors. I need your guidance in choosing a new car. I have shortlisted a few options, but am confused about which one to finalise. I live in Delhi, and about 70% of my travel is within Delhi NCR and Gurgaon, often during heavy traffic. Parking spaces are tight due to the population density. I am looking for a car that is highly safe, fuel-efficient, and comes with automatic AT or DCT. Please suggest.

Thank you for your patronage; we appreciate it. While many options fit the bill, considering your intra-city usage and focus on safety, we’d recommend the Skoda Kushaq. It’s compact and comes equipped with a smooth 6-speed AT gearbox. Skoda Kushaq has also received safety 5-star safety rating from Bharat NCAP. The 1.0 TSI engine’s fuel economy is quite sensitive depending on driving style, but with careful driving, you can achieve decent mileage.

I’m planning to buy a new car and I live in Chennai, with a budget of 15 to 19 lakhs. I have shortlisted the Kia Sonet HTX and the Skoda Slavia R 1.0. I like the Slavia, but I’m a bit concerned about its mileage. Could you provide me with the expected mileage for the Slavia 1.0 in both automatic and manual versions? Additionally, I’d like to know the mileage for both petrol and diesel versions of the Kia Sonet, including the automatic and manual options. My monthly usage is between 1000 and 1500 km. Thank you!

In Autocar India’s real-world tests, the Skoda Slavia 1.0-litre petrol manual delivers an overall mileage of 13kpl (combined city and highway), while the automatic returns 11.95kpl. The manual is more efficient because it has a direct mechanical connection between the engine and the wheels, whereas the automatic uses a torque converter, which, by nature, has some energy losses due to fluid coupling, especially in stop-start urban conditions.

The Kia Sonet 1.0-litre turbo-petrol delivers 13.5kpl in manual form and 14.05kpl with the DCT (dual-clutch automatic). The 1.5-litre diesel is more efficient, giving 17.1kpl for the manual and 16.3kpl for the automatic. The diesel Sonet is not only frugal but also surprisingly enjoyable to drive. It has a smooth and refined 6-speed torque converter automatic, which complements the diesel engine’s strong torque delivery well.

If fuel efficiency is a top priority, the Sonet diesel is the better option. It’s also well-equipped and has a good-quality interior. However, the Slavia is in a different league when it comes to space, comfort, and overall driving experience. It rides better, feels more planted at high speeds, and offers a more premium feel with strong performance and good safety credentials. That said, turbo-petrol engines like the Slavia’s are sensitive to driving style—drive it hard, and the fuel economy can drop quickly.

Based on your monthly running of 1,000 to 1,500km, a diesel Sonet makes a lot of practical sense. But if you’re looking for a bigger, more comfortable car with a more engaging driving experience, the Slavia is still a compelling option—just be ready for slightly higher fuel bills.

Hope this helps you make an informed choice.

I've been a Maruti user for three decades: Maruti 800, Zen (old jellybean), Swift, and S-Cross Alpha (Diesel). Now, I am looking for a replacement for the S-Cross. I need the car to be compact (sub-4m), powerful, and convenient to maintain. Diesel or petrol, no EV. Price is not an issue, up to INR 40L. Can you suggest something?

Unfortunately, there aren't any 'premium' sub-4-metre cars on sale, despite your healthy ₹40 lakh budget. You could consider the VW Taigun 1.5 DSG or Skoda Kushaq 1.5 DSG, which are as compact as your S-Cross (though not under 4 metres in length). Both vehicles offer strong performance and are fun to drive.

However, if you want something strictly smaller, the Skoda Kylaq is your best bet.

I own a 2014 Skoda Rapid Petrol AT, which has done 73,000 km. I’m considering selling it due to multiple issues and switching to a petrol automatic SUV. We are a family of four, and usage will mostly be within Bangalore, with one or two highway trips a month. My budget is ₹15 lakh (on-road). Here are my options: Brezza AT – Sensible choice, but performance and safety are concerns Honda Elevate – Cabin noise is a downside Kiger – Concerned about maintenance Venue – Lacks space I’m not interested in the Nexon or 3XO. Please advise.

You can go for the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, and there’s no reason to be concerned about its safety or structural integrity. The only drawback is that it might feel a bit dull to drive. On the upside, it’s a well-rounded and sensible choice in this segment.

If you're looking for something that feels as solid as your Skoda Rapid, the Skoda Kylaq is also a good option, though it doesn’t feel as spacious as the Brezza, particularly at the rear.

The Maruti Suzuki Brezza price in Bangalore for the petrol automatic variant ranges from Rs 13.81 lakh to Rs 17.28 lakh. Meanwhile, the Skoda Kylaq price in Bangalore for the petrol automatic variant ranges from Rs 13.57 lakh to Rs 17.29 lakh.

Please suggest a good tyre upgrade for my Skoda Rapid. The stock tyres are Goodyear Assurance 195/55 R16. My priorities are ride comfort, low NVH, and long tyre life, in that order. My driving is primarily on cemented highways, up to 120 km/h. Also, is upgrading to a 205/55 section tyre for a wider stance advisable?

Upsizing to a 205/55 R16 profile will not only marginally increase your car’s ground clearance, but also improve braking and handling thanks to the wider contact patch. But, doing so may negatively impact your car’s fuel efficiency.

You will find multiple tyre brands depending on your budget. Michelin and Pirelli are the most expensive options. Domestic brands are more affordable, while mid-range choices include Yokohama, Bridgestone, Goodyear, Vredestein, and Continental, among others.

To make an informed decision, you can refer to our guide on how to choose the right tyre for your car.

When will the new Octavia RS launch? How does it compare with the new Golf GTI?

The new Skoda Octavia RS is expected to launch in India later this year, likely before the festive season. It feels very similar to the Volkswagen Golf GTI, as both cars are built on the same platform and share mechanical components, including the 265hp 2.0 TSI engine and 7-speed DSG gearbox.

The Skoda Octavia RS holds an edge in practicality, offering a more spacious rear seat and a 600-litre boot that's much larger than the Golf's 380 litres. However, it is also 66kg heavier than the VW, which could have a minor impact on performance. You can read our 2025 Skoda Octavia RS review, where we drove the facelifted fourth-gen model in Croatia to find out if it really can be all the car you’ll ever want.

I want to switch from my current car to a small SUV like the Kushaq, Taigun, or Nexon. I’m not a fan of Mahindra, Kia, or Hyundai, so their cars are not under consideration. Among the options mentioned, which one is better suited to current Indian road conditions and also offers good after-sales service, resale value, reliability, and a hassle-free ownership experience? I prefer an automatic, so which gearbox is more reliable from a maintenance perspective?

Of the three you’ve mentioned, we would rule out the Tata Nexon, as the after-sales experience can vary significantly from dealer to dealer, and in some cases, it can be quite poor.

Skoda and Volkswagen may not offer the absolute best after-sales service, but among the listed options, they are a more dependable choice.

Since you prefer an automatic, it’s worth noting that the 1.0-litre engines in both the Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun come paired with a torque-converter (planetary) gearbox. This is a very smooth and reliable gearbox to have.
