I'm a new driver on the road. Been driving a Celerio (second-hand) for the last 2 years in Bangalore. Looking for an automatic petrol car within a budget of โ‚น9.5 lakh. My priority is safety and ease of adapting to the new car. I am thinking of a Punch. Looking for your suggestion.

Yes, the Tata Punch Adventure AMT is an excellent option, given your requirements. It's tall with a high seating position, which gives you a commanding view out - great for a new driver, yet it's compact enough not to be intimidating around town. It will also feel like a good upgrade from your old Celerio.
Since safety is also a consideration for you, the Punch has been given a 5-star Bharat NCAP crash test rating and gets 6 airbags as standard, plus a good amount of standard safety equipment. If there's a potential drawback, it's that the Punch's 1.2 petrol engine and AMT gearbox aren't the smoothest combination, and as a new driver, the jerkiness at low speeds is something you will have to learn to drive around.
Also consider the Hyundai Exter SX Smart AMT and the Nissan Magnite Kuro AMT as well, as both have smoother powertrains than the Punch.

I want to buy a 7-seater car for my family, but the budget is โ‚น10 lakh. Most of the run is in the city, sometimes on the highway. I want space, but the interior should not feel cheap or compromised.

The closely related Renault Triber and new Nissan Gravite are the best options for you. Both compact MPVs are well within your budget and will surprise you with the versatility and practicality they offer within a small footprint. There's plenty of seating flexibility with middle row slide and recline functions, making it easy to balance space for the third row of passengers. You also have the option to remove the third row seats when not in use to create space for luggage.
The interiors are also well designed with enough new-age features like a touchscreen, digital dials, wireless charging, auto climate control and AC vents at the back. The 1-litre engine isn't big on power but is fine for city use. It does feel underpowered on highway drives, though. While you can get fully-loaded AMT auto versions within your budget, we'd recommend opting for the manual gearbox.
The differences between the Renault Triber and Nissan Gravite are merely cosmetic. You could base your buying decision based on proximity to a dealer and service support. In case you want something larger, there is the option of the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. However, only the base LXI trim is available under Rs 10 lakh.

I am new to car driving and have a budget of under โ‚น10 lakh. My priorities are good mileage, safety, low maintenance, comfort, and an automatic transmission. My usage will be 50% city and 50% highway, with a monthly running of around 1,000-1,400 km. Kindly suggest a suitable car.

We would recommend you look at the Nissan Magnite. Since you are new to driving, the higher seating would offer you a good view outside and a slightly more secure feel compared to hatchbacks or a sedan. The interiors are comfy and spacious enough for a family of four, and since your driving is on highways and city roads, the ride and handling balance of the Magnite will benefit you.

Highway stability is good, and while the city ride can be firm, it does not feel uncomfortable at any point. Opt for the 1.0 litre non-turbo engine as it offers sufficient performance for a relaxed driving style and would be more fuel efficient than the turbo engine.

Within your budget, you would also get a decently equipped variant. The Magnite is also a safe car well-equipped with safety features, and it also scored a 5-star rating in the GNCAP tests.

Reliability is also good, Nissan's dealer network is not widespread, thus make sure you have a dealer in your area who has a good reputation too. If not, consider the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, as a sedan, you will not get that higher seating, but it will meet your other requirements of safety, low maintenance and comfort.

Hello Autocar Team, I have been driving a Tata Altroz DCT petrol since 2022, but I now want to replace it after being involved in an accident while driving. Additionally, the fuel efficiency has also been a concern for me. I am now interested in buying a compact SUV within a budget of โ‚น10-12 lakh. My driving is mostly in crowded city areas, and my monthly usage is around 600 km. Could you please suggest the best compact SUV options in this budget for city driving, keeping in mind good mileage, comfort, and ease of driving?

Moving up from a hatchback to an SUV in a budget of Rs 10-12 lakh, you should check out the Nissan Magnite. Its 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine is punchy and comes with a smooth CVT auto gearbox, which should be handy for driving through crowded city traffic.

Moreover, this engine is fuel-efficient, and the auto gearbox doesn't lower the mileage too much, which is something you will appreciate. At around Rs 12 lakh, you will get a fully loaded Nissan Magnite with most modern features included, making this one of the best value for money SUVs out there. And to top it all off, the Magnite has a 5-star crash test rating from Global NCAP, which should give you a bit more peace of mind.

I currently own a Hyundai Xcent, which I purchased in 2015, and it has covered around 42,000 km so far. My driving is almost entirely in bumper-to-bumper city traffic (about 95%). I am now planning to buy an automatic car, preferably a sub-4 metre SUV, to make daily driving easier. My daily usage will be around 40โ€“50 km in heavy city traffic. Considering these requirements, which automatic sub-4 metre SUV would you recommend?

For bumper-to-bumper traffic, the Maruti Brezza 1.5 Petrol 6AT is ideal. The engine-gearbox combination is smooth, and it feels peppy within urban confines.

Also, the 6-speed torque converter is more suited for the constant stop-go usage than other transmission types like AMT or DCT. If you need something even smaller than the Brezza, you can consider the Nissan Magnite 1.0 Turbo CVT, which is another great option for you.

I drive around 30-35 km daily to work within the city, with varying traffic conditions. Iโ€™m planning to buy a new automatic car, preferably a hatchback or a compact SUV, with a budget of โ‚น10-12 lakh. The car should be comfortable enough for a family of five, especially for occasional weekend getaways. Second-row comfort is very important, as my current Toyota Etios Liva offers good rear-seat space, and I would prefer something similar or better. I am also looking for a car with a good safety rating. Currently, I am confused between the Tata Altroz, Hyundai i20, and Hyundai Venue. Which of these would be the better choice considering my requirements?

While a premium hatchback is the logical update for your budget, the simple fact is that even the largest of them, like the Hyundai i20 and Tata Altroz, can't provide quite as much space as a compact SUV in the second row, and three passengers here will be a squeeze.

Conversely, getting an automatic in most compact SUVs with a decent level of creature comforts would push them outside your budget. The exception here, and the car we would recommend, is the Nissan Magnite. You'll get the fully loaded turbo-petrol CVT version in your budget and it has all the features you need, plus a spacious back seat and comfortable suspension.

Its 100hp turbo petrol engine will also have enough pep for your weekend getaways with 5 on board. Moreover, it has received a 5-star crash test rating from Global NCAP, which should give you peace of mind.

I really like the Skoda Kylaq 1.0 TSI AT, but I am unable to finalize my decision because of the rear seat space and a few other compromises. My other options within a โ‚น14 lakh budget are the Mahindra XUV 3XO RevX and the Nissan Magnite CVT. Considering these choices, which would be the best option overall? Also, what should I prioritise more in this segment - space and practicality or driving performance?

It's a shame that the Skoda Kylaq's rear seat space is not quite up to the best in the segment, because otherwise it is a superb compact SUV that scores highly on most other counts. Of the other options, the Nissan Magnite, while capable and a great value for money, feels like a sub-segment lower in terms of quality, space and performance.

The Mahindra XUV 3XO RevX should be your best bet because it offers both - performance and rear-seat space. In fact, it has one of the most spacious cabins in the segment, although the boot is a bit smaller than others.

The RevX offers a good feature set as well, along with a few unique styling embellishments, and overall, we feel this is the one you should pick.

I want a small city car with AT or CVT. How is Nissan Magnite's performance and maintenance cost?

The Nissan Magnite is a good option for a small city car. It offers a spacious cabin, a comfortable ride, and a refined 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine. The CVT automatic gearbox is smooth and responsive, making it easy to drive in the city.
The Magnite has a good safety rating, and the maintenance costs are reasonable. However, Nissan's after-sales service network is not as widespread as some other manufacturers', so check if there is a service center near you before making a decision.

Hi Autocar Team, I am a first-time car buyer and am considering the Citroen C3. My daily running is less than 50 km and I will use the car for both daily driving and occasional long trips. However, I am confused between the Citroen C3 and the Nissan Magnite and am also unsure about the Citroen brand in India. Is Citroen a reliable brand, and how does the C3 perform in terms of maintenance and mileage? Which car would you recommend?

As a first-time buyer, itโ€™s good that youโ€™re looking at both sides carefully.

The Citroen C3 is a solid and very likeable car. Its biggest strength is ride comfort, it handles bad roads better than most cars in this segment and feels mature for its size. The 1.2-litre turbo petrol, in particular, is a gem. Itโ€™s strong, smooth and easily one of the nicest small-capacity turbo-petrol engines around today. If you enjoy driving and want something that feels a bit different from the usual crowd, the C3 stands out. For your daily run of under 50km and occasional long drives, it will be perfectly comfortable. Mileage is reasonable, especially with the naturally aspirated engine, though the turbo will be slightly lower.

The Nissan Magnite has other strengths. It has better road presence with its SUV styling, a more practical cabin, a bigger boot and a feature list that feels more complete. Nissan, as a brand, has built a reputation for reliability, and its dealership and service network is currently more established than Citroenโ€™s in most cities. That adds peace of mind, especially for a first-time buyer.

So if you like to drive and value comfort and engine performance, the C3 is the more enjoyable car. But if you want a safer, more practical and lower-risk ownership experience, the Magnite is the wiser choice.

First time buying a car, budget is a maximum of โ‚น8.5 lakh. I have shortlisted a few: Nissan Magnite, Fronx, Baleno, Glanza, Skoda Kylaq, and Kia Sonet. Please tell me which one I should buy. I recently learned how to drive, so Iโ€™m looking for a manual with good features. Mileage isnโ€™t an issue.

The best option within your budget is the Nissan Magnite, which represents near-unbeatable value for money at this price point. While the Maruti Baleno and Toyota Glanza are good options too, for the price, the Magnite will offer more space, more features and the all-important SUV-like road presence. The Skoda Kylaq and Kia Sonet are, sadly, out of your budget of Rs 8.5 lakh.
The Magnite's 72hp, 1.0-litre petrol engine and 5-speed manual gearbox make for an easy driving experience, and though mileage isnโ€™t a huge concern for you, it is fuel-efficient as well. Itโ€™s also known to be relatively low on maintenance, which adds to its appeal as a great first car.
