Exterior Design And Engineering

8

With a compact yet upright stance, the Jimny looks every bit the rugged SUV. Its cheerful boxy design, round LED headlamps, clamshell bonnet, and tailgate-mounted spare wheel give it immense character. At 3,985mm long and 1,645mm wide, it’s smaller than rivals but cleverly proportioned. While it isn’t imposing like the Thar, it stands out in its own quirky way.

Interior Space And Comfort

6

The cabin is functional with upright glass areas and retro-themed design. However, narrow width, limited storage, and minimal seat/steering adjustment hurt practicality. Rear access is tight and taller passengers will find space lacking. On the upside, visibility is excellent and there's decent boot space with the rear seats up or folded.

Performance And Refinement

6

Powered by the older 105hp K15B petrol engine, the Jimny feels best at low speeds. It’s refined for city use but lacks punch for highway overtakes. The 5-speed manual feels clunky, while the 4-speed auto is smoother and better suited to its nature. Suzuki’s AllGrip Pro system with low-range makes it a genuine off-roader.

Mileage / Range And Efficiency

6

Claimed figures stand at 16.94kpl (manual) and 16.39kpl (auto). In real-world use, the manual returned 12.8kpl and the automatic 11.8kpl overall—acceptable for a 4x4 but not impressive compared to crossovers.

Ride Comfort And Handling

7

Despite being a ladder-frame SUV, the Jimny rides surprisingly well at city speeds. Off-road, its compact size, low weight, and strong 4x4 credentials shine. Highway manners are decent, but steering is slow and heavy, and it’s not ideal for spirited on-road driving. Brake performance is solid, and off-road angles (36° approach, 47° departure) are impressive.

Features And Safety

7

The Alpha variant includes a 9-inch touchscreen, wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, cruise control, LED headlamps, and reversing camera. Safety features include six airbags, ESP, hill-hold and descent control, and brake-limited slip differential. But off-road gauges like a compass or inclinometer are missing.

Value For Money

6

Priced at ₹12.74–15.05 lakh (ex-showroom), the Jimny is expensive for what it offers in terms of performance, space, and features. However, as a capable, compact off-roader with real charm and utility, it delivers where it matters most—off the road. It’s not for everyone, but it’s a unique and lovable niche SUV.

Every festival season the parking situation near my society turns into a genuine puzzle. Anyone else's Jimny or similar sized car struggling to find spots this time of year.

Been eyeing the Jimny for almost 2 years and finally signed the papers today. Never owned a proper 4x4 before, still feels a bit surreal.

3w

My monthly running is approximately 1,200 km, mostly within the Delhi-NCR region. My family includes my wife, my 11-year-old son, and my mother. I had to sell my beautifully maintained third-generation Honda City V MT because of the 15-year NGT rule in Delhi. In October 2024, I bought a Tata Punch EV S Long Range, which has proven to be tech-loaded, extremely economical to run, comfortable, and very convenient for navigating Delhi's congested roads. However, I still miss having an all-rounder with the character of the third-generation City, especially on highway drives. I have shortlisted two options: the Maruti Suzuki Swift MT and the Maruti Suzuki Jimny AT. I enjoy driving briskly, while staying within legal limits, on highways, which is why the Swift appeals to me. At the same time, my heart is set on Jimny for its classic looks and abilities. I plan to undertake long road trips to destinations such as Keran in Kashmir, Leh-Ladakh, Goa, Arunachal Pradesh, and other parts of the country. Considering my current usage, I may keep just one car in the garage, although I am also open to owning both an EV for city driving and an ICE car for highway trips. With this in mind, I would appreciate your expert advice on the best long-term choice.

Given your usage and aspirations, the Maruti Suzuki Jimny AT is the better fit. Your monthly running of 1,200 km in Delhi-NCR is well within petrol territory, and your intent to do long road trips to places like Leh and Arunachal points towards a car with capability rather than outright speed. The Swift is a fantastic highway car, but it is ultimately a hatchback and will not give you the sense of adventure or the ability to tackle rough terrain that the Jimny offers. The Jimny, on the other hand, is a purpose-built off-roader with a classic appeal, and it will allow you to explore the kind of destinations you have in mind with confidence. It is not the fastest car on the highway, nor is it spacious, but it is comfortable enough and excels when the going gets tough. Since you already have the Tata Punch EV for city duties, the Jimny can be your dedicated adventure vehicle, and you do not need to compromise by keeping only one car. This combination gives you the best of both worlds: an efficient city runabout and a characterful, capable highway explorer.

Hi, I am planning to purchase a Jimny this year. I love to travel to the mountains and visit offbeat locations. I am from Uttarakhand. Also, I have really liked the Mahindra Vision S in the spy shots. Will the Vision S be available with 4x4? Should I wait for it or go with the Jimny? Thank you.

Go for the Maruti Suzuki Jimny. Your usage is exactly what the Jimny is designed for: mountain travel, offbeat locations and challenging terrain. It is a proven, purpose-built 4x4 with a low-range transfer case, compact dimensions and excellent off-road capability. That makes it ideal for Uttarakhand’s narrow mountain roads, broken tracks and unpredictable conditions. The Jimny is also reliable, easy to maintain and backed by Maruti’s strong service network, which is important in remote areas. The Mahindra Vision S is an interesting upcoming product, but it is not a direct rival to the Jimny. It is expected to be a larger, more premium SUV and is unlikely to be offered with a proper 4x4 system with low range. It will be more of a lifestyle SUV rather than a hardcore off-roader. If your priority is genuine off-road capability and mountain travel, the Jimny is the clear choice. If you want a larger, more comfortable SUV for family use with occasional soft-roading, then the Vision S could be worth waiting for. But for your specific use case, the Maruti car mentioned above is the right tool for the job.

Hi team, I am considering buying the Maruti Suzuki Jimny because of its compact dimensions, good looks, and SUV feel, mainly for city driving and short road trips. However, I am concerned about its low sales and resale value. The Mahindra Thar Roxx seems too large for city use, while the Mahindra Thar feels cramped in the second row. Please suggest whether I should consider buying the Jimny. Is a facelift expected soon? Should I wait for the 4x2 variant if it is going to be launched?

Verified

The Jimny is a genuinely likeable car with its compact dimensions, rugged looks and proper SUV feel, and it is well suited to city use and small road trips. However, your concerns about low sales and resale value are valid. The Jimny has not found a large audience, and that does have an impact on long-term ownership confidence. The Thar Roxx is indeed much larger and less city-friendly, while the standard Thar remains cramped in the second row, so neither is an ideal alternative for your usage. You can expect the Mahindra Thar Mileage to be around 9 to 11 kpl in the city and 13 to 15 kpl on the highway. The Thar Roxx price starts at 12.52 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). As for a facelift, there is no confirmed timeline for a major update, and waiting for a 4x2 variant is not advisable unless you are specifically looking for a more affordable, less capable version. The Jimny’s appeal lies in its 4x4 capability, and a 4x2 version would dilute much of what makes it special. If you love the Jimny for what it is, you can still go ahead and buy it, but do so with the understanding that resale value may not be its strongest suit. If that is a major concern, you may want to consider more mainstream alternatives like the Brezza or the Kylaq, which offer better ownership confidence without the same level of off-road character.
