I'm looking to buy an SUV (petrol or diesel) with strong road presence, good fuel mileage, and low maintenance. My budget is around โ‚น25 lakh. I'm also open to a quality used model (post-2023) with under 20,000 km. Can you recommend options?

The Mahindra XUV700 is a reliable and well-packaged SUV that is strong on road presence, has a good amount of equipment and a strong set of powertrains. Both, the petrol and diesel engines are strong, and while the diesel is more efficient, check if your annual mileage is above 15-20,000km. The Tata Harrier/Safari have a stronger road presence but are not as reliable or efficient as the Mahindra.

Asked by: Kiranon Nov 19, 2025

Should I choose a diesel or petrol engine if I select an SUV like the XUV700 or Safari automatic?

Currently, the Tata Safari does not offer a petrol engine; however, that will change next month. Regarding your query, it really depends on what you want out of your car.
A petrol automatic Mahindra XUV700 will be refined and very peppy to drive; however, the fuel efficiency will be very low, expect a single-digit figure in the city. This is where the diesel option is better. In our opinion, the diesel engine in the Mahindra SUVs is refined enough and in our opinion the better all rounder offering a good mix of performance, refinement and efficiency.

We are a family of six looking to upgrade from a 2015 Hyundai Grand i10 (petrol). Our budget is โ‚น23โ€“25 lakh. Iโ€™ve shortlisted the Mahindra Scorpio N, Mahindra XUV700 and Tata Safari but am confused about which to choose and which variant to pick. Please help with a recommendation and suggested variants.

The Mahindra XUV700 is the best option in this company. It has the most sorted cabin when it comes to ergonomics, features and quality. The powertrain is strong and refined, and it has a very good ride and a spacious cabin as well. The AX7 with an automatic gearbox will be a good choice as you get a refined petrol engine with a smooth-shifting automatic gearbox and a long list of features too.

Weโ€™re a family of four planning to buy a 7-seater automatic within a โ‚น20โ€“25 lakh budget. Our priorities are a 5-star safety rating, essential safety features and possibly ADAS (though weโ€™re unsure how relevant ADAS is on Indian roads). Usage will be city driving, weekly ~200 km runs, and 5โ€“10 long trips a year. Weโ€™re confused between the Mahindra XUV700, Toyota Rumion and Kia Carens because of concerns about XUV700โ€™s service, Carensโ€™ safety rating, and Rumion being similar to the Ertiga. Which should we pick?

Given your requirements, you should choose between the Mahindra XUV700 and the Tata Safari. Both three-row SUVs come with a full, 5-star safety rating from Global NCAP, both come featured-packed, and both get ADAS tech as well.

Both SUVs will also be comfy for your family on highway trips, but the Mahindra car will be a bit easier to drive in the city thanks to its lighter controls. And unlike the Tata Safari, the Mahindra XUV700 can also be had with a petrol engine, and it comes with an AWD option.

Hi, I have had a Ford Ecosport 1.5l petrol for 12 years and have been waiting to change it for the last 4-5 years to one step higher segment, but I have yet to find a better replacement. Basically, I am looking for a 5-seater (which can actually seat 5 adults) Petrol or Diesel car/SUV, with good road presence and minimum body roll. I drive 50 km a day in Bengaluru and go outstation once every six months. I have shortlisted Scorpio, Harrier, XUV700, Slavia, and the upcoming Seirra. I can wait for 3 months max. What do you recommend?

The upcoming Tata Sierra seems promising, and it could be worth waiting for. That said, the Mahindra XUV700 is among the most sophisticated SUV options in terms of driving comfort, space for 5 adults, and performance.
Furthermore, this Mahindra car is easy to drive in the city and is also very comfortable on highways. Hence, we'd recommend narrowing down your options between the upcoming Sierra and XUV700.

Hello, I have owned a Nexa XL6 for the past five years, and it has been very comfortable. Now itโ€™s time to change the car. Iโ€™m looking for a 7-seater and have shortlisted the Scorpio N, XUV700, and Tata Safari. Please share your expert recommendation. Thanks.

Purely as a seven-seater, the Tata Safari is the comfier option, with good space for adults in all three rows. The Mahindra XUV700 comes second in terms of space, but it feels smoother and more refined than the Safari.
The Scorpio N is the least spacious, especially for adults in the third row.

I currently own a 4x4 Thar petrol AT. Iโ€™m confused between the Thar Roxx and the Tata Sierra. The Sierra looks premium, but the Tharโ€™s ruggedness gives me peace of mind in traffic, water-logging, and bad roads. The Sierra has many screens and touch panels, and Iโ€™m unsure how they will age over time. Which one should I pick?

On the question of Tata Sierra reliability, only time will tell. That said, the Sierra appears to be one of Tataโ€™s best-finished products yet and is appealing not just in its exterior design but also in its fit and finish, interior quality, space, practicality, and features.
As for choosing between the Tata Sierra and the Mahindra Thar Roxx, you are right that the Roxx is more rugged and will handle waterlogging better. However, in most other areas, the Sierra will be the stronger choice. Its monocoque construction will give it a more comfortable ride, and it will be easier to drive in traffic and park, too.
If you are considering a more comfortable and practical Mahindra, the XUV700 is also a strong option, and a facelift is around the corner, which may be worth waiting for.

Asked by: Rishabh Tiwarion Nov 12, 2025

I want a powerful, well-equipped car with advanced ADAS. Iโ€™m considering the Sierra or the Mahindra XUV700 facelift as an upgrade from my Nissan Terrano (85 PS, rugged). I do 500โ€“1,000 km/month on highways and 10โ€“15 km daily in the city. I donโ€™t want to spend above โ‚น30 lakh (I already own a second car and will receive another in 5 years from my job). Please differentiate the two and advise which suits my needs.

The Tata Sierra and Mahindra XUV700 belong to completely different segments in terms of size, engines and price. We have yet to drive the Sierra, but based on confirmed details, it is a Creta-sized SUV at about 4.3 metres. It will offer three engines: a 1.5 litre turbo petrol, a 1.5 litre turbo diesel from the Curvv, and a 1.5 litre naturally aspirated petrol, which is likely to be the volume seller. Tata Sierra prices are expected to start around โ‚น11 lakh for the base variant and go up to about โ‚น20 lakh for the top trims.

The XUV700, on the other hand, is a segment above and rivals the Tata Harrier and Safari. It is much larger, gets more powerful 2.0 litre turbo petrol and 2.2 litre turbo diesel engines and also offers a seven-seat layout. Naturally, it will be significantly more expensive than the Sierra, especially in the higher variants.

Given that most of your driving will be on the highway and you want something powerful, the XUV700 will suit your needs far better.

I am 68 and drive about 500 km per month. I need a 5-seater petrol SUV within a โ‚น25 lakh budget, with a large boot, reasonable maintenance, good features, and strong safety.

The Mahindra XUV700 would be a great choice. It has a strong petrol engine with good performance, a large boot once you fold down the third row, and a comprehensive set of features.
This Mahindra car has also scored 5 stars for adult occupant protection in GNCAP testing and is a fantastic package in your budget.

Asked by: Bharat Agarwalon Nov 6, 2025

Which SUV should I buy within a โ‚น20 lakh budget? Iโ€™m looking for a powerful SUV thatโ€™s safe, fuel-efficient, and suitable for a family of five.

If youโ€™re looking for a top variant with all the premium features, consider the Mahindra XUV 3XO, the AX7 Luxury 1.2 Petrol GDI AT variant. This Mahindra car has a wide cabin that comfortably accommodates five occupants, a powerful 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine, and a full 5-star Bharat NCAP safety rating. The only drawback is its relatively small boots.
If you want something larger, the Mahindra XUV700, the AX5 Select diesel variant, is a great option. Itโ€™s very spacious with the option of two extra seats, has a full 5-star Global NCAP rating, and its 2.0-litre diesel engine is powerful and efficient.
