I’m confused between the Tata Safari and the Mahindra XUV700 - which should I choose?

Between the Tata Safari and the Mahindra XUV700, it’s the Mahindra car that we would recommend. It is more comfortable, has strong engines, offers a more refined driving experience and has better features.

The Safari scores well on design, feels a bit tougher over bad sections and has the more spacious third row, but all things considered, the Mahindra XUV700 is better. It might be worth waiting for a few months, however, as the XUV700 facelift is just around the corner.

I plan to upgrade my car. My monthly running is around 1,000–1,500 km. I’ve shortlisted the Innova HyCross (petrol, non-hybrid) and the Mahindra XUV700 (petrol). Which one should I buy? My budget is up to ₹25 lakh.

The Mahindra XUV700 would be a better choice in this comparison. The Toyota car, while more spacious, is quite thirsty in its non-hybrid guise, with an efficiency of around 7kpl in the city and around 9kpl on the highway.

Considering your monthly running, a petrol SUV would be the right choice and here, the XUV700 is the better product. It has better features than the Toyota Innova HyCross. The ride and handling are nicer, and the engine performs a lot better, too. It is the better overall package and our recommendation.

I want to buy a new SUV that offers the fuel efficiency and ownership experience of a hybrid like the Hyryder, the safety and road presence of the Scorpio N, and the comfort of a 6-seater automatic petrol like the XUV700. I also want to keep this new car for around 10-12 years. Please suggest a model that can meet most of these requirements.

While there isn't exactly a car that's as efficient as the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, the road presence of a Mahindra Scorpio N, and has the comfort of an XUV700, a vehicle which could come close is the Mahindra XEV 9S.

Being an electric car, running costs will be very low, and comfort and road presence are similar to an XUV700. The Toyota Innova HyCross will be efficient and comfortable, although it won't offer the Scorpio-like road presence that you're looking for.

Hi, I have a 2017 Ford EcoSport Diesel Titanium, which served me well with hardly any issues. Now, I want to upgrade to a new or used car (open to both) with a budget of 12-20 lakh. I’m confused between the new or used Toyota Hyryder Hybrid, Tata Sierra, new Seltos, Thar Roxx petrol auto, or new/used Honda Elevate ZX CVT. I recently test-drove a used 2023 Jeep Compass S petrol auto, which I liked, but petrol is discontinued, and it’s only E10 compliant. What do you suggest, wait or buy now?

With a budget of Rs 20 lakh, your options in the used car market are endless - get the newest possible car you can find, preferably still in warranty. Being an EcoSport owner, it is natural to gravitate towards the Jeep Compass for its toughness and brilliant ride-handling balance.

You can look for a less-driven Mahindra XUV700 automatic for its well-roundedness. Out of the new options, the Tata Sierra seems promising and is worth waiting for before you finalize.

I am about to buy an automatic, petrol, 7-seater car, keeping the next 12 years in mind. Based on my budget, I have shortlisted the XUV700 AX5 and the Hyundai Alcazar Prestige (DCT). I am a moderate user; my current car has done only around 35,000 km in the last 12 years. My usage is a mix of highway and city driving. If I choose mileage, I feel the Alcazar is better, but in terms of build size and looks, I prefer the XUV700 AX5. I am a bit puzzled between these two. Any suggestions?

The Mahindra XUV700 is more spacious and has a punchier engine. Since you plan to hold on to your cars for a long time, we'd recommend you wait till the first quarter of 2026, when Mahindra brings in the updated XUV700 with the latest in terms of tech and features.

Another option which you may consider is the upcoming Tata Safari petrol AT - as a seven-seater, it is likely to be comfier than the XUV700 and Hyundai Alcazar.

The Toyota Innova HyCross hybrid is a no-nonsense MPV that delivers on all aspects - comfort, space, fuel efficiency, and with Toyota's backing, promises a trouble-free ownership experience. Since you like to keep your cars for a long time, the Innova Hycross hybrid is the safest bet.

The Tata Safari and Mahindra XUV700 are tough SUVs, and while both are well-equipped, the Tata car is more comfortable than the Mahindra car for passengers seated in the third row. Meanwhile, the XUV700 is a lot smoother and more refined than the Tata Safari. If you are picking between these two, we'd suggest waiting for the heavily updated XUV700, expected in the first quarter of 2026.

Hi team, I am planning to buy a new car next year. I currently own a Kia Sonet GTX Plus and now want to move to a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder engine option. My budget is around ₹30 to 35 lakh maximum. I want strong performance, a good suspension setup, good handling and, most importantly, comfort for rear passengers and long drives. Kindly suggest which SUVs fit my budget. I have shortlisted the Jeep Compass Model S for its 4x4 option and the Mahindra XUV700 for its AWD option. I am open to other suggestions as well.

The Jeep Compass Model S is the more premium option, with a higher-quality interior and stronger badge value. However, it's also quite a bit more expensive when you consider the top 4x4 version, and most of all, for your requirements, the rear seat isn't all that spacious.

You should definitely go with the Mahindra XUV700 AWD, as it offers more space in the back as well as more features. Its 2.2-litre diesel engine is strong (and so is the 2.0 petrol, in case you're interested), and ride quality and handling are very good too.

My priority for getting a new car is a bit different from usual. I have three dogs (all medium-to-large breeds: Golden Retriever, Labrador and Indian Pariah), and I like travelling with them on long road trips once every quarter. My previous car was a 2014 Honda Amaze MT, which was very cramped. My requirements are an SUV that is powerful and safe. Maintenance and fuel costs can be a little high. My preferred budget is Rs 15 lakh, but I can stretch to Rs 20-22 lakh if it is worth it. I love driving and music and prefer a manual transmission, though I can consider an automatic. The EcoSport’s flatbed was interesting for my use case.

You may consider the Kia Syros for its roomy cabin. Its boxy shape makes it surprisingly spacious on the inside, and its rear windows roll down almost fully, which your four-legged members will appreciate.

The 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine of this Kia car is adequately powerful, and its controls are light, making it quite user-friendly. Its music system is quite good too. You could also consider entry-level variants of the Mahindra XUV700 for its sheer size and cabin space.

I am planning to buy the base model of either the XUV700 or the Scorpio N. I need a seven-seater. I am more inclined towards the XUV700 because of the last-row AC blowers and the split seats that allow it to be a six-seater with luggage space. However, the resale value of the Scorpio N is higher. I plan to use this vehicle for 5 to 7 years. My monthly running is over 2,000 km, including both highway and city use. Maneuverability is important, as well as ground clearance for bi-yearly trips to rough terrain like Leh and Spiti. Please suggest what I should purchase.

If you look at them purely as 7-seaters, the Mahindra XUV700 is the better choice. Its third row is more comfortable than the Scorpio N’s and, as you noted, it also offers added convenience features such as third-row AC vents. The XUV700 is far more comfortable for daily use thanks to its monocoque chassis, which delivers better ride quality and is easier to drive. Where it cannot match the Mahindra Scorpio N is in ruggedness.

The Scorpio N’s ladder-frame chassis makes it better suited to rough terrain, and its rear-wheel-drive setup gives it an advantage when things get tough in places like Leh and Spiti. The XUV700 has enough clearance for mild off-roading, but it will not feel as effortless as the Scorpio N.

My monthly driving is around 2,000 km, with 80 percent city usage and 20 percent highway. I want to purchase an SUV for a family of four. I am looking for an economical yet powerful car. I am confused between the Creta SX(O) Diesel AT, Seltos GT Diesel AT, XUV700 AX5 Diesel AT, and Scorpio Z8.
