I want a 7-seater diesel car with good mileage. My daily driving is around 30 km on the city or village roads. Iโ€™m confused between the Alcazar and the XUV700 - which should I choose?

The Hyundai Alcazar and Mahindra XUV700 are both competent SUVs. However, given your requirements, the Hyundai Alcazar would be a better fit for you.

The Hyundai Car is slightly smaller in terms of dimensions, and that, coupled with its light control, means it's easier to drive in the city. It also gets a refined 116hp, 1.5-litre diesel engine that can be had with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. The Hyundai Alcazar mileage is 20.4kpl for the diesel manual and 18.1kpl for the automatic (company claimed).

Hi, Iโ€™m looking to buy a new (non-electric) car with a budget of โ‚น10-12 lakh. Iโ€™ll use it mainly for office commute (about 35-40 km one way), with monthly running around 1,200 km. Please suggest the best options.

Since you are looking for an additional car and mainly for office commutes, a sub-4-meter car along with an automatic transmission would be best. Check out the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, it is compact enough for the city, and the automatic gearbox is a torque converter unit. It is much smoother than an automated manual (AMT), which is what most others at this price offer.

Having a Mahindra XUV 400 means you would be used to a smooth drive and a higher seating position, too, both of which you will find in the Brezza. It also fits within the sub-4-meter dimension and thus would be a tad easier to find parking in the city.

I want to buy a high-seated 7-seater car like the Scorpio N (diesel manual). My daily running is around 50 km, but my family wants to buy an EV for the 50 km per day drive. Since we have mixed opinions, what would be the better decision, an EV or a diesel?

The type of powertrain depends on your usage. If you cover 50km daily in the city and the car will mostly be used in the city, then an electric car makes sense. The Kia Carens Clavis EV is a good choice as it has a good range and spacious seating for 7.
However, if you plan on doing outstation trips often, then a diesel will be a better choice. The Mahindra Scorpio N has good performance and is comfy, but not as spacious as the XUV700.
The Mahindra XUV700 would be a better buy than the Scorpio N in your case.

I want to purchase a 7-seater automatic with good ride comfort, strong suspension, and top safety. Iโ€™m considering the Innova Crysta, Innova HyCross, and XUV700. Which is the better choice?

Both the Toyota Innova Hycross and the Mahindra XUV700 are good options considering your requirements.

Between the two, however, the XUV700 would have the edge with respect to your two requirements for ride comfort and safety. Do bear in mind, though, that a facelift is due next month, and thus, if you are going in for the Mahindra Car, we would advise you to wait.

I am confused between the XUV700 petrol and diesel. My monthly running is 700kms, 70% in Jaipur city. Please advise.

Considering your low monthly running of, which the majority is in the city, a petrol version would be ideal. While the diesel is more efficient, the higher up-front cost you pay will require you to drive a lot more to offset the delta in price. Go for the Mahindra XUV700 petrol as it would be more economical overall.

Asked by: DEEPANSHU PANCHOon Nov 24, 2025

I am planning to buy an XUV700 in January. My monthly running is 600-700 km, about 70% in the city. I live in Jaipur, Rajasthan, and Iโ€™m confused about the fuel choice. Should I opt for petrol or diesel? Please advise - thanks.

Considering your monthly running is under 1000km, and most of your driving is in the city, we suggest going for the petrol version of the Mahindra XUV700. While the diesel will be more efficient, it is over a lakh more expensive than the equivalent petrol variant, and with your limited usage, it will take years to recover that cost. Additionally, since around 70 per cent of your driving is in the city, there is a higher chance of facing DPF clogging issues with a diesel engine.

We would also recommend waiting a bit before making the purchase, as the XUV700 facelift is just around the corner. It is expected to come with updated styling, more features and possibly changes to the suspension.

Given your limited city running, you could also consider the soon-to-launch Mahindra XEV 9S, which is a seven-seater. We expect it to be priced slightly higher than the Mahindra XEV 9E five-seater, and it should carry the same battery size, offering a good range. With home charging, its running costs will be much lower than the petrol or diesel XUV700.

Hi team, I purchased a Tata Nexon Creative+S (manual) 2023 model in December 2024 due to discounts. I recently drove the AMT variant of the Nexon (top-end) from Ooty to Masinagudi and back, and completely fell in love with the ease of driving it. Now I only want an automatic. I want to upgrade my vehicle and, with the advent of the Sierra, new Seltos, new 7XO, and the petrol Adventure+ Safari, what should I choose? Mostly the city use and highway once a month.

Since you are familiar and happy with your Tata Nexon, it's probably a good idea to stick with Tata Motors and check out the new Tata Sierra, which is launching tomorrow. It is a size and segment up on the Nexon, so it should feel like a considerable upgrade. This Tata car is also expected to come with larger 1.5-litre petrol engines, naturally aspirated and turbocharged, although the 1.5-litre diesel engine is expected to be the same.
The Mahindra XUV700 or XUV 7XO facelift is expected to gain a lot of tech from the XEV 9e and 9s, including a triple-screen infotainment system, but that aside, it should largely be the same.
Similarly, the Tata Safari petrol will gain the same 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine as the Sierra, but should otherwise be the same.
The new Kia Seltos is, for now, an unknown quantity, but it is expected to grow in size, as well as tech, which also likely means a jump in price. Hence, given most of your usage is in the city, we recommend going with the Sierra, as it will be a big enough upgrade without having to get an overly large SUV.

Looking to buy a vehicle for city use with a daily running of 40-50 km and a budget below 20 lakhs. My top priority is back seat comfort, as it will be chauffeur-driven since my wife doesnโ€™t drive. Vehicle safety is also a top priority. I am open to any body style. Kindly suggest.

The MG Hector is a great pick if rear seat comfort is your top priority. It has a very spacious and airy cabin, and rear seat comfort is good too. What also strengthens Hector's case is that ride comfort at low city speeds is plush. The Hector petrol makes sense given that you arenโ€™t looking for a vehicle for city driving. Do bear in mind that the Hector petrol's fuel economy is poor.

There are also other options that deliver a good rear seat experience. Our top picks include the Hyundai Creta, Mahindra XUV700, Honda City and Kia Carens Clavis.
You could also wait for the Tata Sierra, which could be a comfortable option worth considering.

I'm looking to buy an SUV (petrol or diesel) with strong road presence, good fuel mileage, and low maintenance. My budget is around โ‚น25 lakh. I'm also open to a quality used model (post-2023) with under 20,000 km. Can you recommend options?

The Mahindra XUV700 is a reliable and well-packaged SUV that is strong on road presence, has a good amount of equipment and a strong set of powertrains. Both, the petrol and diesel engines are strong, and while the diesel is more efficient, check if your annual mileage is above 15-20,000km. The Tata Harrier/Safari have a stronger road presence but are not as reliable or efficient as the Mahindra.

Asked by: Kiranon Nov 19, 2025

Should I choose a diesel or petrol engine if I select an SUV like the XUV700 or Safari automatic?

Currently, the Tata Safari does not offer a petrol engine; however, that will change next month. Regarding your query, it really depends on what you want out of your car.
A petrol automatic Mahindra XUV700 will be refined and very peppy to drive; however, the fuel efficiency will be very low, expect a single-digit figure in the city. This is where the diesel option is better. In our opinion, the diesel engine in the Mahindra SUVs is refined enough and in our opinion the better all rounder offering a good mix of performance, refinement and efficiency.
