Mahindra XUV 7XO expert review
We like
Punchy performance from both powertrains
Ride comfort and high-speed composure
Feature packed
We don't like
Third row is tight for adults
Confusing infotainment UI
The XUV 7XO is instantly recognisable, albeit with an edgier treatment for its front fascia. The signature DRLs are still there but arenโt as large as before, the LED headlight flanks a new slimmer grille and below is a sharper bumper with four ICE cube-shaped lighting units.
The silhouette hasnโt changed, but wheel size has gone up from 18 to 19-inchers and trim around the wheel arches is gloss black. At the rear, the LED taillamps are taken from the XEV 9S and it gets a more squared-off bumper. Overall, the design isnโt quite as cohesive as the original design, but it is well executed nonetheless.
8.0
Comfort up front is excellent, with the wide seats offering good support and a decent range of adjustment. Both front seats are ventilated and powered, with the driver getting a memory function, while the passenger seat has powered boss mode. The steering wheel now also adjusts for reach as well as rake. The two-spoke steering is also lifted from the 9S, but this time gets physical buttons instead of the haptic ones. The middle row is similarly comfortable, with a wide bench or optional captainโs chairs โ both options are ventilated. The seat reclines, but it doesnโt slide like the one in the XEV 9S. While there is plenty of legroom in the middle row without it, a sliding function would have helped the third row. As it stands, the third row is cramped for adults. With it stowed away the luggage area is substantial.
8.0
The trio of 12.3-inch displays โ standard across the range โ are sharp and bright, and the infotainment and passenger display are responsive to touch, though the user interface does take some getting used to. The absence of physical buttons means adjusting the HVAC is now, at minimum, a two-step process. The passenger screen gets a privacy filter here unlike on the BEVS, so it no longer draws your eye when checking the far-side mirror. Also featured is a 1,400W 16-speaker Harman Kardon music system, a bring-your-own-device provision to mount tablets on the front seatbacks, with an integrated 65W Type-C charger. The all-important panoramic sunroof is available from the mid AX5 trim onwards, but for rear window sunblinds youโll need to splurge for the top AX7 L trim. Safety kit is equally comprehensive, with six airbags, four-wheel disc brakes, ABS, ESC, hill-hold and hill-descent control standard. The AX7 T trim adds a knee airbag and an upgraded Level 2 ADAS suite.
9.0
The 2.0-litre turbo-petrol makes 203hp and 380Nm, channelled to the front wheels via a six-speed manual or torque-converter automatic. It feels grunty, almost diesel-like at the lower end, but is happy to extend to the 5,800rpm redline. Itโs refined and smooth too, with no vibrations creeping into the cabin. The six-speed automatic is also well suited to the engine, but paddle shifters are still missing. The 2.2-litre diesel motor puts out 185hp and 450Nm (420Nm with the manual), and while itโs not as effortless as the petrol, itโs no slouch either. Refinement is good; the engine gets vocal when pushed hard, but in day-to-day driving itโs nicely muffled. Here too, the automatic is a good match for the engine, but the manual feels shorter geared than youโd expect. Itโs happy to chug along in third around town and rarely requires a downshift to make an overtake, but a taller sixth would help it settle into a cruise and eke out better efficiency still.
9.0
Mahindra hasnโt quoted fuel-efficiency figures, but we donโt expect them to differ much from the XUV700. The ARAI figures for the petrol XUV700 are 13kpl with the automatic and 15kpl with the manual โ in the real world, these often drop into the single digits. The diesel XUV700 is more frugal, with ARAI figures of 17kpl and 16.57kpl for the manual and automatic respectively, and itโs possible to get close to these numbers on a steady highway cruise.
7.0
Despite the wheel size going up an inch, the low-speed ride is even better than before thanks to the new DaVinci dampers. Thereโs a newfound plushness to the way it soaks up rough patches without letting anything through to the cabin. It also gets hydraulic bump stops that greatly soften that thud you get when the suspension bottoms or tops out. As before, high-speed manners are superb with an uncanny ability to mask speed as the dampers do a great job of keeping the body flat and composed. Confidence is high through the bends as the XUV 7XO unflinchingly sticks to the chosen line. Even unsettling mid-corner bumps and dips are dealt with in a fluid, one-and-done motion. The electric steering is light enough to be twirled with one finger at a standstill but weights up and provides good feedback as speeds rise. Braking performance is strong too, with disc brakes on all four corners โ now standard across the range.
9.0
The starting price of Rs 13.66 lakh โ exactly the same as the outgoing MX trim of the XUV700 โ is incredible bang for your buck. These prices are introductory and set to rise after the first 40,000 bookings, but it is still tremendous value for what you get. The strong engines continue to deliver the punchy performance weโve come to love, and the ride and handling balance is even better than before. If that isnโt enough, there is enough tech to shame some from segments above. Sure thereโs still bits that need improving like a less confusing UI and more physical controls and those who regularly seat seven will find more comfort in the back of some of the competition, but given the XUV7XOโs tremendous abilities in all other areas, this is something many will ignore.

Trending Questions on Mahindra XUV 7XO - Answered by Autocar Experts
Hi, Iโm planning to buy a new car in Delhi NCR. The car will be mostly used in the city, with occasional highway drives. There are some tax benefits if I buy a car with an engine larger than 1.6L. What recommendations can I get in that segment? My requirements are ride quality, safety, and reliability.
I have booked the Mahindra XUV 7XO AX7L AWD diesel automatic. My running will be very low, with drives only on weekends for about 150 km. Should I buy it, as AWD is only available in diesel?
Hi Autocar Team, I currently own a 2012 Hyundai Verna Fluidic diesel manual and have clocked around 2.2 lakh km. I am now planning to buy an additional car as an upgrade. I have shortlisted the Mahindra XUV700 AX7 diesel manual and the Renault Duster 1.3 turbo petrol manual. I recently test-drove the XUV700 diesel automatic and was impressed with its cabin space and ride quality. I intend to keep the new car for around 15 years and am specifically looking for a driver-focused car as an upgrade from my Verna. Could you please suggest which of these would be the better choice for my needs?
We would suggest going for the Mahindra XUV 7XO diesel manual. The biggest reason is that it feels like a proper upgrade in every sense. It is a larger, more spacious car, with a more premium cabin and a very comfortable ride, which you have already experienced in your test drive.
More importantly, the diesel engine suits what you are used to with your Verna. It offers strong low-end torque and relaxed cruising, which makes it feel effortless on highways and more satisfying to drive over long distances. Over a long ownership period, diesel also tends to be more efficient for regular highway use.
The Renault Duster 1.3 turbo petrol, on the other hand, is a good driverโs car. It will feel lighter and easier to drive, especially in tighter city conditions. However, while the turbo petrol is enjoyable, it wonโt give you the same sense of punch as the Mahindra larger 2 litre diesel, or the same space and long-distance comfort as the XUV 7XO.
We would still urge you to test drive the new Duster before taking a final call, but as an overall upgrade, the XUV 7XO is the stronger choice.
Hello Autocar Team, I am planning to buy a new car. My monthly running will be around 500 km, and I also have a second home that is connected by a 1 km stretch of rough, unpaved (kuccha) road. At times, when the entire family travels together, we require seating for up to 7 people. Considering these requirements, would the Kia Carens Clavis be a suitable option for my needs, or should I look at other alternatives?
For your requirement, the Kia Carens is actually a very good fit, and yes, it makes sense to consider it. Your usage is quite low at around 500 km per month, so a petrol automatic or manual is the right choice. Diesel is not required and may not suit such low running.
The biggest reason the Carens works for you is the flexibility of 7 seats. It is also a comfortable car, especially for family usage. The ride quality is well-suited for city and highway driving, and the second and third rows are usable, which is important in your case.
For your 1 km kuccha road, the Carens can handle it without any issues as long as you drive carefully. The suspension is compliant enough for mild rough roads, but it is not a hardcore SUV. So you will need to go slowly over bad patches.
If you want something more rugged with better ground clearance, you can also consider the Tata Safari. It is better suited for rough roads and has a stronger SUV stance. While it is not as flexible or practical as the Carens as a 7-seater, it is still decent for family use. It is also a better 7-seater than something like the Mahindra XUV 7XO, where the fixed middle row makes the third row less flexible and more cramped.
Go for the Kia Carens if your priority is comfort, space and flexibility for family use. Consider the Tata Safari if you want better rough-road ability and a more rugged feel, but with some compromise on third-row practicality.
I am planning to buy my first car with a budget of around โน17-18 lakh, which I can stretch up to โน20 lakh since we do not plan to upgrade anytime soon. We are a family of six, including elderly parents, so we are specifically looking for a 7-seater vehicle. Our top priorities are safety, long-term reliability, and overall comfort for family usage. Our usage will be minimal, with around 100โ200 km per month in the city and occasional long trips of about 500 km. Given these requirements, could you please suggest the best 7-seater options available in the market and recommend which would be the most suitable based on long-term ownership experience?
Go for the Mahindra XUV7XO, it meets your safetyโfirst brief with an extensive safety features list and a 5โstar Bharat NCAP crash rating. The 7XO offers decent cabin space, and while the third row is not as comfy as the Safari, it's still fairly useable and the SUV has a very good ride quality too. Mahindra has proven that its new-gen products are quite reliable, so your other two requirements of comfort and long-term reliability will also be met here.
Opt for the petrol version, mileage in the city will be very low - likely in high single digits - but since you drive very little, this should not be a concern. Moreover, you will also not have to worry about DPF issues with a diesel engine, which, with very low running, can cause the DPF to clog.
I am planning to buy a 7XO diesel automatic. My daily drive would be around 60 km (Delhi-Gurgaon-Delhi). I was just reading about the DPF, so now I am in doubt whether I should go with the diesel option or not.
Hi team, Planning to purchase mahindra xuv 7xo AX7T AT in petrol, my monthly running is around 500 km. Is advisable to go for petrol? Shall I opt for AX7L model? Please suggest.
The diesel Mahindra XUV 7XO is significantly more efficient than the petrol model. However, given your limited running, the near Rs 1 lakh extra spend for a diesel version of the same trim level doesn't add up. Further, modern-day diesels need a bit of extra care to keep running flawlessly. A steady speed highway drive, for instance, every couple of weeks helps in DPF (diesel particulate filter) regeneration. For someone with such low running, you might have to specially work a long drive into your schedule for this process. The petrol engine doesn't have any such extra requirement and is, hence, more suited to your kind of usage.
The AX7 T is already well equipped and offers plenty for the money. Among the features exclusive to the AX7 L are powered front seats, configurable ambient lighting and larger 19-inch rims. To us, the features of more interest are concentrated at the back. Features such as a boss mode, rear wireless charger, and middle row ventilation do a lot to up the experience at the back. In a nutshell, it's worth considering the AX7 L only if the middle row seat will be used often.
I am planning to buy the Mahindra XUV 7XO AX7T. My monthly running is 500km. Should I go for petrol or diesel? I am also confused between AX7T and AX7L. Please suggest.
Iโm planning to buy a new car with a budget of around โน25 lakhs. My requirement is a three-row (6-7 seater) vehicle with captain seats in the second row and an automatic petrol transmission. Currently, Iโm deciding between the Mahindra XUV700 AX7L and the Toyota Innova Hycross GX(O). My daily usage is relatively low (up to 25 km per day), with occasional long road trips about 3-4 times a year. I intend to keep the car for around 4-5 years before upgrading. Additionally, I would prefer a vehicle that is available for delivery as soon as possible.
The right choice essentially boils down to your priorities. If the driving experience and general feel-good factor are important to you, the Mahindra XUV 7XO AX7 L has more to offer. The 200hp petrol engine is strong and refined, and delivers an enjoyable drive experience. The 6-speed AT gearbox that's well in tune with the engine's character and well-balanced ride and handling also easily makes the XUV 7XO a better driver's car. Mahindra has also gone to town with features on the XUV 7XO, and elements like the triple screen layout do add a wow factor to the cabin.
On the flipside, the 7XO isn't the best vehicle for 6/7 passengers. The middle row seats don't slide fore and aft, so there's no way to balance space for the third row of occupants. Space in the last row is tight, and there's also very limited luggage room with all seats up.
The Toyota Innova Hycross with the 2.0-litre petrol engine does little to excite. Sure, engine refinement is good, and performance is pleasant, but the CVT gearbox really takes away from the experience. Fuel economy is also very poor (to be fair, the XUV 7XO petrol is also poor on efficiency). Also, the GX(O) is a mid-spec variant of the Hycross.
The interior looks and the fabric upholstery are not in keeping with a vehicle of this price. Where the Innova Hycross excels is in seating comfort and space. The second row is flexible, and there's loads of room even in the last row. It's easily the comfiest vehicle on long distance journeys. Further, the Hycross also offers reasonable space for luggage with all seats up.
An alternative you could consider is the all-electric Mahindra XEV 9S. It has all the wow factor of the XUV 7XO and also adds in seating flexibility with sliding middle row seats. Other highlights include refinement and strong power. The XEV 9S offers more than enough range for your daily drives and, if you choose a route with ample charging stations on the way, can also be used as a long-distance vehicle.
I am planning to upgrade my car, which I purchased back in 2014. I currently reside in Bangalore, and my budget is in the range of โน20-30 lakh. My daily commute involves 30-40 km within the city, mostly in bumper-to-bumper traffic, along with occasional weekend trips out of the city (about twice a month). I am looking for a vehicle with a powerful engine and modern features, including ADAS. Would you recommend opting for the XUV 7XO for weekend trips while using an EV for city driving, or would the 7XO be suitable for both city and highway use? I am also mindful of potential DPF issues with diesel engines.
