The new Mahindra Thar price in India starts from Rs 9.99 lakh, and rises to Rs 16.99 lakh (ex-showroom), with 7 variants on offer. The 3-door Thar facelift has a familiar silhouette, but the visual package is enhanced with a body-coloured grille and a dual-tone front bumper, adds practical interior updates and a larger 10.25-inch touchscreen with an updated off-road suite, while retaining the existing three-engine line-up. The 3-door Mahindra SUV slots below the 5-door Thar Roxx.

Just like the pre-facelift model, the new Thar offers 3 engine choices: a 152hp 2.0-litre turbo-petrol, a 119hp 1.5-litre diesel and a 132hp 2.2-litre diesel, along with their respective gearbox options. A 4WD setup is optional with the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, but it is standard with the 2.2-litre diesel motor. Thar RWD can only be had with the 1.5-litre diesel engine.

The 2025 facelift of the new Thar adds a body-coloured front grille, rear wiper and washer and a rear camera. New exterior colour options - Tango Red (which replaces Red Rage) and Battleship Grey - have been from the Mahindra Thar Roxx colour palette. The Thar interior has been upgraded with a 10.25-inch touchscreen, a new steering wheel, rear AC vents, door-mounted power window switches, individual centre armrests for the front passenger and driver with storage, a grab handle on the A-pillar and a fuel-lid opener button.

The Mahindra SUV competes with the Maruti Suzuki Jimny and Force Gurkha 3-door in the relatively niche mass-market off-roader segment.

Iโ€™m looking for a car for my wife, who is turning 30. Her daily usage will be short city drives, about 8 km to and from the gym, along with grocery runs and mall visits. Our budget is โ‚น15 lakh, and we already own an i20 and an XUV700. Is the Thar 3-door RWD a good option for her, or would something more practical and fuel-efficient be better?

Considering her use is mostly in the city, the Mahindra Thar 3 Door is not a great idea as it's too large and bulky. It is best suited to the off-road track, or at least if you travel out for weekend picnics or getaways often.
Consider a compact SUV like the Skoda Kylaq, the Kia Sonet, or the Hyundai Venue, as they are the right size, but also practical and feature-loaded enough, with efficient engines. Given the limited usage and considering you have two other cars, you could also consider a compact electric car like the Tata Punch EV.

Iโ€™m looking to upgrade to a new car. My monthly usage is around 1,000 km, mainly for city commuting as a college student. My budget is โ‚น10-15 lakh, and Iโ€™m considering the Mahindra Thar 4x2 or the new Hyundai Venue diesel.

Between the two, we definitely recommend the new Hyundai Venue diesel. Being a monocoque compact SUV, itโ€™s likely to be more comfortable, easier to drive, and more efficient than the Mahindra Thar or Thar Roxx.
Between the two Thar versions, the Mahindra Thar Roxx is the better choice as itโ€™s more practical and comfortable for daily use.

Hello. I am looking to buy the Thar as a daily driver. I already have the Crysta for touring. My daily use will be mostly within 100 km and my annual usage is around 10,000-12,000 km. I would like your esteemed advice on which engine and fuel type I should consider for my use case. Thank you!

Considering your requirements, go for the diesel variant of the Thar. The petrol engine is smoother and more refined, but it will be heavy on your wallet due to its low fuel efficiency. The diesel engine, on the other hand, is refined, punchy, and will serve your purpose well. However, keep in mind that the three-door Tharโ€™s ride quality isnโ€™t the most comfortable for daily driving.

Which is the best car in terms of safety, reliability, driveability, and fuel efficiency? The options I am considering are the Thar, Taigun, and Kushaq. Also, is it okay to go for a diesel car?

The Mahindra Thar is a bit of an outlier among these three options. Itโ€™s the only 3-door model, the only one built on a tough body-on-frame chassis, and the only one that comes with a diesel engine. Going for a diesel SUV is absolutely fine, in fact, the lack of diesel options in the Taigun and Kushaq petrol variants can be a disadvantage if you value fuel efficiency and torque for highway or off-road driving.

If the Thar is going to be your second or third car that will be used occasionally for off-road trips or wilderness drives, then itโ€™s a compelling choice, and the 1.5-litre diesel is significantly cheaper too.

However, in terms of refinement, comfort, driveability, and on-road sophistication, the Volkswagen Taigun and Skoda Kushaq are far superior. They are smoother, more comfortable, and easier to drive daily, making them better all-rounders for city and highway use.

Asked by: Tharunon Oct 7, 2025

The 2025 Mahindra Thar 3-door has been launched; however, the side-facing rear seats, which were available in the 2020 model, are still missing. Is there any indication that Mahindra will reintroduce the Thar 3-door with side-facing rear seats?

Itโ€™s unlikely that the Mahindra Thar 3-door will be reintroduced with side-facing seats, as these benches did not support proper three-point seat belts or ISOFIX child seat mounts, which could compromise passenger safety. Moreover, such a setup would likely result in a lower crash test rating.
