Jeep Wrangler
There are few SUVs that are as iconic as the Jeep Wrangler. The body-on-frame Wrangler has its roots tied to World War 2 Jeeps models made specifically for the US army in the 1940s. The American 4x4 is locally assembled at the brand’s Ranjangaon facility in Maharashtra, and it’s Jeep’s flagship product in India. The Jeep Wrangler’s price ranges between Rs 66.20 lakh and Rs 70.80 lakh (ex-showroom). More expensive alternatives to the Wrangler include the Land Rover Defender, Mercedes-Benz G-Class and Toyota Land Cruiser.
Powering the Jeep Wrangler is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine with direct injection, which means 270hp and 400Nm of torque. This engine is paired with an 8-speed torque converter automatic transmission and drives all wheels via a full-time four-wheel-drive (4WD) system. Being an off-road-focused SUV, the Wrangler can be had with front & rear differential locks, a low-range transfer case, heavy-duty Dana axles and multiple off-road modes. The claimed top speed of the Jeep Wrangler is 180kph.
Depending on the variant, the styling details of the Wrangler change. However, all of them get the Jeep’s familiar seven-slat front grille and deep-set circular headlamps, while also featuring short overhangs, squared windows, flared wheel arches, exposed door hinges and a tail-mounted spare wheel. The Wrangler’s modular design concept also means that its windshield, doors and hard-top roof can be removed. For water-resistance, the interior has polyurethane wrap on the dashboard, along with special switches and motors too.

This includes ‘Rubicon’ decals, chunkier off-road tyres, 17-inch alloy wheels, high-performance suspension, heavy-duty Dana axles, front & rear diff locks, an electronically disconnecting sway bar, Off-Road Plus drive mode, and pre-wired auxiliary switches. There’s also a windscreen with Corning Gorilla Glass, a front-facing camera, plus steel side rails & skid plates. Inside, the Rubicon gets Nappa leather seats, and a 9-speed Alpine audio system. Questions you may find useful
I want to buy a new SUV around ₹20 lakhs as my primary car. I really love the shape of the Thar Roxx. I want a capable, punchy engine that gives a feeling of great pickup. Mileage is not an issue for me. Most driving will be in the city. Can you suggest an SUV and variant (diesel/petrol)?
Yes, the Mahindra Thar Roxx has an iconic shape that resembles the Jeep Wrangler and has a lot of appeal. If mileage is not an issue, then go for the 2-litre petrol automatic, which is smooth, responsive and has a good pick-up. You don’t need a 4x4 for the city, and hence the rear-wheel-drive MX3 variant will suit you best. The Thar Roxx price starts at 12.52 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
