The Hyundai i20 set a high benchmark for premium hatchbacks when it launched. Its design blends maturity and style with crisp lines, a bold grille, swept-back headlamps and a clean silhouette that belies its compact footprint. The proportions are balanced and give the i20 a slightly upscale look compared with its peers.

The i20 N Line adds a sportier edge to the same platform. Aggressive bumpers, larger intakes, gloss-black highlights, 17-inch wheels and red accents lift its stance visually. The overall shape remains familiar, but the performance cues make it feel like a hatchback with intent rather than just another top-trim model.

The N Line MT ramps up those cues further with deeper front spoilers, gloss-black treatment and unique decals that underline its performance focus. Engineering fundamentals โ€” MacPherson front struts and torsion beam rear suspension โ€” are unchanged, but the N Line tweaks steering and damping for a sharper feel.

Inside, the standard i20โ€™s cabin impresses with fit and finish that punch above its price. The dashboard has a clean layout with quality plastics, a floating touchscreen, digital cluster and soft-touch surfaces in key areas. Seats are supportive, the centre console is logically laid out and rear passengers enjoy reasonable space for a premium hatch, with good headroom and luggage capacity.

The i20 N Line keeps the same ergonomic strengths but adds sporty touches like red contrast stitching, paddle shifters on the automatic and aluminium pedals. Materials and fitment remain high quality, though the overall space packaging is fundamentally the same as the standard car.

The N Line MT swaps automatic-specific trim accents for a more driver-centric feel with a sporty gear lever and stitched elements that feel purposeful underfoot and at the fingertips. Rear space and comfort remain unchanged across all variants.

Across the i20 range, features are generous. Standard kit includes a touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, wireless charging, digital instrument panel, connected car tech and automatic climate control.

The N Line adds performance-themed elements such as unique drive modes, paddle shifters on the automatic, sport seats and N Line badging. Safety kit stays robust with multiple airbags, ABS with EBD, stability control and ISOFIX child mounts across most variants.

On the standard i20, fuel efficiency is competitive for the segment. The naturally aspirated petrol returns good real-world figures in city use, while the turbo petrol with DCT is efficient on highways if not aggressively driven.

The N Line variants share similar efficiency traits with the turbo engine. The automatic returns respectable economy for its power output in everyday driving. The manual, while slightly thirstier under spirited use, still delivers acceptable figures when driven sensibly.

Ride comfort in the standard i20 is one of its strengths. Suspension absorbs urban potholes and road irregularities with ease while body control stays composed within realistic speed envelopes. Steering is light at city speeds and builds confidence on highways.

The i20 N Line auto introduces a slightly firmer suspension tune and sharper steering calibration that adds confidence through corners. It feels more planted at speed than the regular i20, though the ride retains comfort rather than switching to hard sportiness.

The N Line MT further sharpens the experience. The combination of manual shifts, crisp chassis responses and confident turn-in make it one of the more engaging premium hatchbacks. Handling is predictable and controlled, with a direct steering feel that encourages brisk driving without instability.

Across the i20 range, features are generous. Standard kit includes a touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, wireless charging, digital instrument panel, connected car tech and automatic climate control.

The Hyundai i20 remains one of the most compelling premium hatchbacks in India with a strong balance of quality, features and everyday usability. It undercuts some European rivals on kit while offering a more refined drive than many peers.

The i20 N Line automatic adds a performance flavour without straying far from affordability in its segment, making it a strong choice if buyers want both refinement and a sporty character.

The N Line MT enhances value for driving enthusiasts who want a manual gearbox and sharper dynamics. It stands out as one of the most engaging premium hatchbacks available, merging performance-oriented fun with the practicality of the regular i20.

I am a 37-year-old self-employed male with two young kids. I loved the Virtus and decided to make it my first car. However, when I calculated the cost of ownership over 10 years, I felt I would be spending too much. My preference shifted towards the Hyundai i20 N Line after reading reviews that described it as a good driverโ€™s car with ample rear space and decent boot space. Mileage is not a concern. My question is: will it satisfy me, or will I regret not getting the Virtus? If I choose the N Line, should I go for the manual or DCT? My usage will be 30% city and 70% highway.

If you have set your heart on the Volkswagen Virtus GT 1.5 TSI, we would strongly recommend you go for one. It is enjoyable to drive, and the 1.5 TSI engine elevates the drive experience manifold. Yes, the total cost of ownership will be higher than the Hyundai car; however, the smiles the Virtus delivers per kilometer makes it worth the stretch. It is one of those decisions that you buy with your heart, and it'll bring you a certain satisfaction each time you are behind the wheel of your car. You don't want to be in a state where you need to compromise, buy a car you're not too keen on getting, and regret your decision every time you see a VW Virtus GT.
That said, if the Virtus GT is a financial stretch you're not comfortable with, then the Hyundai i20 N Line is an excellent hatchback that's both practical and fun-to-drive. The manual gearbox is more engaging than the DCT, and if you don't have to deal with a lot of bumper-to-bumper city traffic, it is the one that we'd recommend.

Namaste Team. I own a Wagon R VXI 2015 and now wish to upgrade. We are a family of five, and my monthly driving is not more than 600 km. I am a driving enthusiast, and my budget is โ‚น13 lakh on-road. I do not want to consider Tata. My family has been associated with Maruti Suzuki for the past 30 years, but I am open to other brands.

If you're an enthusiast and a keen driver, your best bet is the Hyundai i20. It is a much larger hatchback than your Maruti Suzuki Wagon R, which should be comfortable for your family of five, and in your budget, you should get the fully loaded N8 variant too.
It is available with a 6-speed manual or 7-speed DCT auto gearbox, and both are a good mix of fun and ease of use. However, it has to be said that the i20 is now starting to show its age, and fun as it is to drive, you may want to look at a more modern offering.
If so, check out the Skoda Kylaq, which is even more spacious and practical, but also comes with a punchy and enthusiastic 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine. It's got great dynamics and a smooth 6-speed automatic gearbox, if you want it. However, do note that it is more expensive, and you will have to settle for a mid-spec variant in your budget.

I want to buy a base-model car for city use. Please suggest which is better between the Hyundai Aura and i20 Era, or recommend another car in the same price segment.

The Hyundai Aura and i20 are powered by the same 1.2-litre petrol engine, which is refined, peppy and fuel-efficient. They also use the same smooth 5-speed manual gearbox with a light clutch and steering. Both of these Hyundai cars are equally easy to drive too.
Go for the Aura if you need a big boot. Otherwise, the Hyundai i20 is the one to pick - it is well-built, its interior is nicer, the cabin is more spacious, and overall it is the better car.

Iโ€™m planning to buy the Hyundai i20 N Line N8 Manual. My monthly travel will be under 500 km. Will this car be economical in terms of maintenance costs and mileage? Also, should I wait for the upcoming i20 facelift or go ahead with the current model? Finally, should I choose the i20 N Line, or are there better alternatives I should consider? Please suggest.

The Hyundai i20 N Line is the sportiest hatchback for the money. It is powered by a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine that's zippy, and its 6-speed manual transmission is slick in operation. Moreover, the N Line drives well and certainly feels more special than anything else in the market.
As far as maintenance costs go, the i20 N Line is likely to be slightly more expensive than the standard i20 petrol, but the difference should not be significant. In terms of fuel efficiency, the i20 N Line is likely to return around 10-12 kpl in the city and 15-17 kpl on the highway.
Sure, the N Line is a bit pricey, but it is more of an emotional buy. If you love to drive, go for it. However, if you are trying to rationalise this purchase, there are more affordable and more fuel-efficient, equally (if not more) practical hatchbacks that are cheaper to maintain, such as the Maruti Baleno/Toyota Glanza, Tata Altroz, or even the standard i20 petrol.

I am in Bangalore and planning to buy my first automatic car as a new driver, with a budget of โ‚น10-12 lakh. I am confused between the Baleno AMT, i20 iVT and Sonet. Earlier, I was thinking of buying the Punch, but due to service issues, I am not considering it. The Exter AMT also seems like a good option.

Given your requirements, you should consider the Hyundai i20 IVT. Unlike the Maruti Baleno and Hyundai Exter which get AMTs, the i20 offers a more seamless drive experience thanks to the CVT automatic, which is smooth and user-friendly. The Sonet, meanwhile, comes with a DCT automatic, which is more jerky in stop-and-go traffic than the CVT.
The Hyundai i20 IVT is powered by a refined 88hp, 1.2-litre petrol engine that has a claimed efficiency of 20kpl. This hatchback offers a spacious and comfortable cabin and comes with all the features expected in this class. Being a Hyundai car, the i20 will also be reliable and easy to maintain. Hyundai i20 IVT prices range from Rs 8.13 lakh to Rs 10.34 lakh (ex-showroom).

Iโ€™m planning to buy an automatic car for my parents, and Iโ€™m really confused between the Hyundai i20 and the Honda Amaze. The car will be used mostly in city traffic, so comfort, ease of driving, and reliability are very important to me. Which one would suit elderly drivers better and be easier to live with in the long run?

For your parentsโ€™ usage, mainly for city driving with a focus on comfort, ease of use and long-term reliability, the Honda Amaze would be the better choice.
The Hyundai i20 is a premium hatchback and comes very well equipped, but it isnโ€™t quite as effortless to live with as the Amaze. The Amazeโ€™s 1.2-litre petrol engine paired with a CVT automatic is exceptionally smooth and predictable, which is exactly what you want in stop-go traffic. The CVT responds gently and progressively, making it very easy for elderly drivers to modulate throttle inputs without any jerks.
The i20 also offers a 1.2-litre petrol automatic, but it doesnโ€™t feel as smooth or as relaxed as the Hondaโ€™s CVT in daily driving conditions.
Another important factor is accessibility. The Amaze is slightly easier to get in and out of, which can make a real difference for older occupants. The cabin also feels a touch more spacious and airy, adding to overall comfort.
Considering all these factors: smoothness, ease of driving, comfort and practicality, the Honda Amaze would be the more suitable and stress-free option in the long run.

Hi, I am planning to buy my first automatic car. It will be used mostly within Bangalore city, and occasionally, I will drive to my native place. Could you please suggest a good family car within a budget of Rs 10 lakh?

As your first car, we recommend the Hyundai i20 petrol-IVT for its smooth and refined powertrain. The interiors feel upmarket, and it is spacious and comfortable too. The Hyundai i20 Sportz IVT variant should fall within your budget, and despite being a mid-variant, it covers the basics well.
If you want a crossover-like option, you could opt for the Maruti Suzuki Fronx or Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor with the 1.2 petrol-AMT combination. Do keep in mind that it is likely to be more fuel-efficient than the Hyundai; the drive experience won't be as smooth or seamless.

Iโ€™m planning to buy an automatic car for my parents, and Iโ€™m really confused between the Hyundai i20 and the Honda Amaze. The car will be used in city traffic, so comfort, ease of driving, and reliability are very important to me. Which one do you think would suit elderly drivers better and be easier to live with in the long run?

The Honda Amaze is a no-nonsense, user-friendly compact sedan, with a smooth and responsive 1.2-petrol-CVT combination. Its large 416-litre boot gives it an advantage over the i20.
The Hyundai i20, on the other hand, feels distinctly more premium in terms of interior quality, as well as the equipment list. The i20's power delivery feels lazier than the Amaze's; however, it is much more refined in comparison. Moreover, the Hyundai also has broader, more supportive seats. Hence, for your parents, we'd recommend the i20 IVT for the more polished user experience it delivers.
That said, Honda and Hyundai are known for their service support and reliability, hence your ownership experience is likely to be trouble-free by opting for either of these two cars.

I am a first-time car buyer, but am confused between Altroz DCA and i20 IVT. I am 5.4ft, and have a family of four. City usage with 1/2 long trips in a month.

Considering your primary usage is in the city, a CVT gearbox is a better option than a DCT. DCTs can be jerky in stop-and-go traffic and are prone to overheating, which results in more frequent wear and tear. With that in mind, the Hyundai i20 CVT would be a better choice for you.
This Hyundai car is easy to maintain and comes equipped with most of the features available in the segment. Its CVT is also one of the smoothest on the market. The i20 has a larger wheelbase (2580mm) compared to the Tata Altroz (2501mm), translating into better second-row space. The engine is refined, and the power delivery is smooth, making it an overall easier car to live with.

I am 32 years old and have three other family members. I am planning to buy my first car and am confused between the Hyundai i20 and the new Hyundai Venue. Please suggest which one to pick, and also recommend a suitable trim. My budget is close to โ‚น11-12 lakh. I would prefer an automatic. The car will be used mainly for commuting and occasionally for long trips. Thanks.

It really depends on what you prefer: a car from a higher segment that is nicer to drive but has fewer features, or a car from a lower segment that offers far more premium features.
For daily commutes, the Hyundai i20 IVT (CVT) works beautifully. It is silky smooth, and the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine has enough poke for quick overtakes at lower speeds. Combined with its compact dimensions, it is very easy to drive, which is a big plus for a first-time buyer. It is only on the highway where it can feel a bit underpowered, and this is where the 1.0-litre turbo DCT in the Venue has a clear advantage.
The new Venue is spacious enough for a family of four. The 1.0-litre turbo engine with the DCT is smooth in the city, but what makes it more versatile is the fact that it feels far more effortless on open roads compared to the i20 IVT. It is also easy to drive, with good all-around visibility. That said, the most affordable Venue variant with the DCT is the HX5, which is still over โ‚น12 lakh on road and only offers basic features. With the i20, however, you can get the top Asta (O) variant, which comes loaded with premium features, including a Bose audio system.
So, the final choice really comes down to what you value more: driving ease and premium features, or an SUV that offers greater comfort and better highway performance.
