Subject: Seeking the Ultimate "Forever" Car for a Purist Garage Dear Autocar Team, I am a hardcore automotive purist looking to make a very special milestone purchase. I want to buy a car solely for the absolute joy of driving - a mechanical machine that will put a smile on my face decades from now. My goal is to find a definitive enthusiast car that possesses the reliability, emotional character, and timelessness to be a lifelong companion in my garage. I want to buy this car brand new and never sell it; it will stand as a symbol of my hard work and achievements so far. To give you a picture of my current garage, my daily drivers are a Mahindra BE6 and a Toyota Innova Hycross. My absolute maximum budget is Rs. 3 Crores. The shortlists currently on my radar are the BMW M2 manual, the Land Rover Defender 90, and the base Porsche 911 Carrera. I am also entirely willing to wait until 2027 if there is an upcoming launch that stands out as an absolute keeper with future-classic potential. Given these choices, which route would you recommend for a true "forever" car? Looking forward to your expert guidance and recommendation. Best regards, Brijesh Devareddy Chennai

Go for the Porsche 911 Carrera, because nothing else on your list blends pure driving feel with decades-long heritage and timelessness the way a 911 does. It is the rare sports car you can enjoy driving hard, keep stock, and still use as a daily driver. The flat-six, the steering, and that rear-engined balance make even a slow drive feel special, and it will still look and feel “right” when everything else has dated. It fits within Rs 3 crores, leaving room for a few choice options. Plus, Porsche will support this iconic sports car well beyond this generation's life cycle. The M2 manual does sound like more bang for your buck, but it won’t age into a forever icon the way a 911 will, and though the manual is involving, in the long run, it's more trouble than it's worth. The Defender 90 is lovable, but it is a heavy off-road toy, not the car you’ll reach for when you want that last 5 percent of driver joy. If you can fit it into your forever-car budget alongside the 911, there's nothing like it.

Can you suggest an upcoming EV with sufficient ground clearance to comfortably clear Indian speed breakers, while also having a low enough seat height and easy ingress so that I can transfer from my wheelchair to the front passenger seat with minimal effort? We currently own a Mercedes-Benz E200 (2025 model). My wife's daily commute is generally only around 5 km. However, we would prefer a larger battery pack in case we decide to take longer trips, such as to Goa. The car should also offer a boot capacity of at least 575 litres, enough to accommodate my folded wheelchair along with additional luggage. We previously owned a Skoda Superb, which was excellent in terms of both ground clearance and boot space. Our budget is around Rs. 1 crore.

Try out the Tesla Model Y L. It is a three-row SUV with a fairly large 420-litre boot with all seats up, which expands to a massive 1,076 litres with the third row folded. There is also a sizeable frunk for extra storage. The claimed range is 681km, so in the real world, a Mumbai-to-Goa trip is doable with one or two top-up stops. Ground clearance is about 169mm, which is on par with your Superb. It is tall, yet the seat isn’t as high as some SUVs, so sliding across from a wheelchair should be easier. It won't be as easy as your sedans, so make sure you try getting in and out at least a couple of times. It also fits comfortably within your budget and comes very well equipped. It's worth noting that a lot of functions are baked into the large central touchscreen, and that might take some getting used to.

Hello, I am planning to buy an SUV for around Rs 1.5 crore. My options are the Mercedes-Benz GLS, Land Rover Defender, Range Rover Sport, and Porsche Cayenne. Which one should I go for?

Verified

At this budget and with these options, there are many directions you could go, all of which have some distinct advantage. The easiest one is the Mercedes-Benz GLS, which offers maximum space for your money, including a third row of seats. It offers the choice of smooth six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, and Mercedes has the widest sales and service network of all these brands, so you're in good hands. Do note that, of these SUVs, this is the most common, and its large size can make it cumbersome to drive around town. The Land Rover Defender could be seen as the best value for money, and the one that offers the most variety, including four- and six- cylinder engines, and various body styles and seating configurations. With a slight stretch in budget, you can even get a supercharged V8 engine, which is incredibly characterful. However, quality in the Defender isn't quite as good as the rest, including its own sibling, the Range Rover Sport. The Sport will push your budget, and even then, it offers a 6-cylinder petrol or diesel in a single HSE trim. However, it is the most rounded offering, mixing sumptuous luxury with good dynamics and characterful engines, not to mention excellent badge value. If you can stretch your budget slightly, this is the one to get.The Porsche Cayenne is the one to choose only if you put driving above all else on your priority list. It is exciting from behind the wheel and is a high-quality, solidly engineered product that also has great badge value. However, its performance focus means it's not as comfortable or easy to drive at low speeds, and many seemingly basic features are optional extras, which means it too will push the limits of your budget.Overall, the Range Rover Sport is the best bet for you, or if you want a bit more space, the Mercedes-Benz GLS.

I am looking to buy a car for around Rs. 1 crore by the end of this year. I love sedans, but I am horrified about ground clearance, as my current C-Class scrapes over speed breakers quite often in my city. I am only considering hybrid or electric vehicles. I do not see diesel as a viable long-term option, as I typically keep my cars for around 10 years. Petrol is also not ideal for me because my monthly running is around 2,000 km, making it less economical. Could you please suggest suitable options?

For the moment, there's no hybrid sedan that fits your requirements. The Lexus ES 350h hybrid is due for launch, though. The Lexus ES is already on sale in a full electric Lexus ES 500e avatar. It packs in crisp styling, a lot of features and the promise of a reasonable range. However, we have yet to drive one and cannot comment on ground clearance at this time.Since you are open to buying electric, an enticing option is in the works. BMW is readying a long wheelbase version of the all-electric i5, and a key engineering job on the project is to ensure ample ground clearance for Indian conditions. The BMW i5 M60, sold in short wheelbase form, was notorious for scraping its belly on speedbreakers and bad roads, and the promise is that this won't be an issue on the i5 LWB. The model is expected to go on sale in the coming months and could be an exciting option to look for.

Which car should I purchase with a budget of ₹1 crore? My usage is mostly city driving (around 30 km daily and approximately 10,000 km annually). Should I choose the Mercedes-Benz GLE or GLC, or wait for the BMW iX3? My priorities are a reliable engine and gearbox, good seat comfort (as I have a back problem), and reasonable mileage. Please suggest.

For your needs, we'd recommend the Mercedes-Benz GLC from your shortlist. The GLC’s front seats have good lumbar support and wide adjustment, so it is easy to set up a posture that is kind to a weak back, and the cabin is quiet which reduces fatigue on longer days. Between the petrol and diesel, it's a trade-off between mileage and maintenance - the diesel's fuel economy is no doubt better, but it also requires AdBlue topups and DPF regeneration every so often, so keep that in mind. You'll have to stretch well beyond ₹1 crore on-road for the GLE, but then it does ride and drive better, especially if you choose a six-cylinder model with air suspension. As for the BMW iX3, it is still a while away, with a launch not expected before 2027. If you can wait that long, however, it is coming here in long-wheelbase guise, so space and comfort should be plenty. Another offbeat alternative you should consider is the Lexus RX 350h. It fits in your budget, is spacious and comfortable, and offers a unique take on luxury with all the features you might want. Its biggest strength is its hybrid powertrain that is incredibly efficient and reliable too. Lexus' network in India, however, is smaller than Mercedes' or BMW's.

Hi Autocar Team, I am based in Chennai and currently use a Toyota Innova Crysta, which is mostly chauffeur-driven. I am now looking to upgrade to a larger 7-seater with ample luggage space for my family. My usage includes occasional long drives of around 600-700 km once every five months. I have shortlisted the Kia Carnival and the MG M9, as both fall within my budget of ₹1 crore. However, I have never owned or used an EV before. Could you please suggest which would be the better option for my needs?

Choose the Kia Carnival 7-seat Limousine variant for a chauffeur-driven family; it gives you the most space and comfort with a truly big boot within your budget. Coming from a Crysta, you will feel a clear step up in rear-seat comfort, a lower walk-in height and a quieter cabin. Also, the list of features your family will use every day, like power sliding doors, sunblinds, and a strong rear AC. The second-row lounge chairs are great for long city runs and for your 600-700 km trip every few months, and the boot can take large suitcases even with all three rows up, which is the main win over your current car. Kia’s service reach in Chennai is wide, so upkeep should be straightforward. One thing to be aware of: the Carnival is a very large vehicle, so tight basements and narrow lanes will require careful driving. Also, running costs in heavy traffic will be higher than those of your Crysta. The MG 9 is a good option too, but only for the city, and for your long trips, you will have to rely on public charging infrastructure, which can slow you down and spoil your trip. We would suggest you stick to the Carnival simply because of your long-distance runs, where you want peace of mind.

Hi Autocar Team, I am 60 years old and have been driving a Toyota Fortuner automatic for the past 14 years. I am now planning to upgrade to a more luxurious vehicle that offers superior comfort, especially for both city and highway use. My budget is up to ₹90 lakh.

After living with a Fortuner for so many years, you’re clearly used to a tough, dependable SUV and likely prefer diesel power. The best upgrade that fits your brief is the Mercedes-Benz GLE. It retains that solid SUV character you’re familiar with, offers generous space, and comes with a strong, refined diesel engine paired with a part-time all-wheel-drive system. While the GLE isn’t built to take quite the same rough-and-tumble punishment as the Fortuner, it delivers far higher levels of comfort, sophistication, and ease of driving, whether in city traffic or on long highway runs. The cabin feels genuinely premium, packed with features and excellent noise insulation, making every journey relaxing. In short, the GLE 300d combines the ruggedness you value with the luxury and refinement you now deserve. Compared to the Fortuner’s utilitarian nature, it feels like a quantum leap forward into the luxury SUV world.

I want to buy a new SUV for daily driving under ₹1.5 crore. My driving is around 3,000 km per month, including both city and highway use. I own a GLS Maybach and a Volvo XC90.

While there are a few interesting options in this price range, we feel you should pick the BMW X5 xDrive30d M Sport. Apart from being excellent to drive and very luxurious, it will feel like a nice departure from your GLS and Volvo XC90. BMW's straight-six engines are superb when it comes to refinement, smoothness and performance, and given your intended heavy usage, some of which is on the highway, we'd recommend the diesel, which is strong and efficient. You can easily get more than 700km out of a tank of diesel in your mixed driving cycle. An alternative is the Mercedes-Benz GLE, which offers more rear-seat space and a slightly more comfortable ride, though we feel it will be too similar to your GLS, or the Lexus RX 500h, whose smooth and efficient hybrid powertrain is an excellent alternative to the established order.

I am looking to purchase a vehicle worth around ₹1.5 crore. What are the best options in the market with good after-sales service?

Verified
19w

There are plenty of options available within your budget of Rs 1.5 crore from brands such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Porsche, Lexus, Land Rover and Maserati. However, since after-sales support is a key priority for you, we would recommend opting for Mercedes-Benz and BMW cars. These manufacturers have the widest service footprint among luxury carmakers, and since the majority of their products are locally assembled, parts are in ready supply. From Mercedes's line-up, we suggest that you consider the GLS from the ICE line-up or the electric EQS SUV. The best options from BMW for the money are the X7 and the all-electric iX. You could also consider the Toyota Vellfire. It's a supremely comfortable MPV with Toyota's bulletproof reliability.

I have a 2011 BMW 5 Series and am planning to upgrade to a performance sedan. I am interested in the BMW M340i, but am not sure if it will last another 10 years because of E20 fuel, and my budget is ₹1 crore - which car should I choose?

Verified

All new cars sold after April 2025 are engineered to run on E20, so you do not need to worry about long‑term reliability on that front. With that concern out of the way, you can confidently go ahead with the BMW M340i. It is a fantastic everyday performance sedan and will put a big smile on your face every time you drive it.
