BMW i5 design and interior

The i5 M60 xDrive shares its overall proportions and silhouette with the ICE-powered 5-Series sedan. Up front, the i5 features BMW’s illuminated kidney grille with the ‘M’ branding. It’s flanked by sweptback LED headlights with signature DRLs, while the wrap-around LEDs at the rear look equally stylish. This being the sporty M60 version gets more aggressive bumpers, side skirts, alloy rims and black trim.

Similarly, the interior of the i5 M60 xDrive isn’t too different to its ICE-powered sibling. The design, therefore, looks sporty yet positively upscale with a generous spattering of high-quality materials and finishes. The driver-centric dashboard and dual-digital displays add to the sportiness, while the comfy seats and well-insulated cabin boost the overall experience. However, the rear seats are best-suited for two adults as legroom is at a premium due to the intrusive rear tunnel. The dual curved displays comprise a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display and a 14.9-inch infotainment screen supporting wireless smartphone connectivity.

Exterior Design And Engineering

With classic 5 Series proportions and modern EV aerodynamics, the i5 looks sharp and purposeful. The M-specific bits add menace, but ground clearance is a real-world deal-breaker on Indian roads.

Interior Space And Comfort

The cabin is futuristic and rich in tech, dominated by a wide curved display housing a 12.3-inch instrument screen and a 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen. Quality levels are excellent, ambient lighting adds drama, and the overall experience feels cutting-edge. However, space isn’t great. The rear seat base is set too low and the large central tunnel makes the middle seat nearly unusable. It feels less roomy than rivals and doesn’t deliver on rear-seat comfort expected at this price point.

Performance And Refinement

Performance is staggering. The i5 M60 makes 601hp and 820Nm, launching from 0-100kph in 3.8 seconds. Boost mode delivers short bursts of maximum thrust, adding a sense of theatre, while the Hans Zimmer soundtrack gives it a sci-fi vibe. It’s ferociously quick yet smooth and silent in traffic.

Mileage / Range And Efficiency

BMW claims 516km, but spirited driving cuts that to around 300km. It’s best for short commutes and weekend blasts, not long-distance road trips.

Ride Comfort And Handling

The biggest surprise is the ride. Despite its 20-inch wheels, the i5 M60 soaks up bumps and broken surfaces with impressive suppleness, thanks to its adaptive air suspension. Rear-wheel steering sharpens agility and reduces the turning radius, helping the 2.4-tonne car feel far lighter on its feet. Steering is accurate, and cornering grip is high.

Features And Safety

The i5 M60 is fully loaded with high-end kit: adaptive air suspension, 4-wheel steering, a superb Bowers & Wilkins sound system, multi-zone climate control, and full ADAS capability. The infotainment interface is crisp but over-reliant on touch, especially for basic functions like air-con control. BMW’s iDrive controller is a saving grace. Voice commands are functional but not as intuitive as rivals like Mercedes' MBUX or Volvo’s Google Assistant.

Value For Money

At Rs 1.20 crore (ex-showroom), the i5 M60 isn’t cheap, but it delivers serious electric performance in a package that’s both luxurious and well-engineered. The lack of cabin space and electric change limits its practicality but bor buyers who want a premium EV that’s fun, fast, and future-ready, the i5 M60 makes a very strong case for itself.

I am looking to buy a car for around Rs. 1 crore by the end of this year. I love sedans, but I am horrified about ground clearance, as my current C-Class scrapes over speed breakers quite often in my city. I am only considering hybrid or electric vehicles. I do not see diesel as a viable long-term option, as I typically keep my cars for around 10 years. Petrol is also not ideal for me because my monthly running is around 2,000 km, making it less economical. Could you please suggest suitable options?

For the moment, there's no hybrid sedan that fits your requirements. The Lexus ES 350h hybrid is due for launch, though.The Lexus ES is already on sale in a full electric Lexus ES 500e avatar. It packs in crisp styling, a lot of features and the promise of a reasonable range. However, we have yet to drive one and cannot comment on ground clearance at this time.Since you are open to buying electric, an enticing option is in the works. BMW is readying a long wheelbase version of the all-electric i5, and a key engineering job on the project is to ensure ample ground clearance for Indian conditions. The BMW i5 M60, sold in short wheelbase form, was notorious for scraping its belly on speedbreakers and bad roads, and the promise is that this won't be an issue on the i5 LWB. The model is expected to go on sale in the coming months and could be an exciting option to look for.
