Exterior Design And Engineering
9
The new F74 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe, built on the UKL2 platform, has grown in size, though the wheelbase remains the same. It features sharper, more refined styling with a shark-nose front, redesigned adaptive LED headlamps, and bold M Sport bumpers. A backlit grille enhances its night-time presence. Proportions improve with 18-inch wheels and taller tyres, raising ground clearance to 165mm. The coupe roofline and frameless doors remain, while the Hofmeister kink now includes an embossed ‘2’. At the rear, clean styling replaces flashy elements for a sleeker, more restrained look.

Interior Space And Comfort
6
The interior reflects BMW’s minimalist design, with most functions moved to a touchscreen and minimal physical buttons. The plush, padded dash features ‘M’ stitching and ambient lighting that changes with temperature. A curved glass panel merges the infotainment and instrument cluster, angled towards the driver. The interface is sleek but not very intuitive. Below the screen are a wireless charger, cup holders, and storage. Front seats are sporty and supportive. Rear space is tight due to the sloping roofline. Boot space is 430L, with a space-saver spare replacing run-flat tyres.

Performance And Refinement
6
The biggest update in the new 2 Series Gran Coupe is its 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder turbo-petrol engine making 156hp and 230Nm, similar to midsize sedans. Vibrations are noticeable at idle but settle once moving. Acceleration is linear but not exciting, and the engine gets audible past 4,000 rpm. ‘Sport’ mode sharpens response slightly, while ‘Boost’ mode tweaks gearing for quicker torque but adds no power. The 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox is smooth and responsive. Though it handles well, the car feels underpowered, and sedate driving suits it best. The chassis deserves more punch.

Mileage / Range And Efficiency

We couldn't conduct a full Autocar fuel test during the first drive, but BMW claims 16.35kpl. Unlike the previous generation, there is no diesel option – so the small-displacement petrol engine is the only contributor to efficiency.

Ride Comfort And Handling
8
The 2 Series shines in handling despite limited power. BMW improved chassis, steering, and suspension, with reworked dampers and front axle tweaks enhancing agility. Wider tires boost grip, making bends and corners enjoyable. However, the stiff suspension results in a harsh ride on city roads, with bumps and potholes felt sharply. While lacking straight-line speed, it feels like a true BMW behind the wheel, even with front-wheel drive. Overall, handling is sharp but comfort suffers.

Features And Safety
8
Most functions are integrated into the touchscreen, but better usability would help. Features include wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, a 360-degree camera, auto parking, and drive modes. Safety tech like Lane Keep Assist and emergency braking is useful but can be switched off in traffic. Missing features include ventilated seats and adaptive cruise control. New additions are a Digital Key for remote access via phone (shareable with five users) and a roof camera that captures exportable photos and video.

Value For Money

The biggest challenge for the new 2 Series Gran Coupe is convincing buyers there’s more to it than looks. Prices aren’t out yet, but it’s expected to cost around Rs 50 lakh-52 lakh, making it the entry point to the BMW brand. While it scores high on style, features and handling, it falls short on comfort, practicality and engine performance. That said, if you’re after design, tech, agility and the BMW badge, it still holds strong appeal.
