Tata Motors crosses 2.50 lakh EV sales milestone

Tata Motors has sold over 2,50,000 EVs since launching the Nexon.ev in early 2020. The Nexon EV has also become the first electric car in India to surpass 1 lakh units in cumulative sales. Tata currently has the widest EV portfolio in the Indian market, with ex-showroom prices for its cars starting from around Rs 8 lakh and going up to about Rs 30 lakh. The company also has a leadership position in the EV segment, supported by its extensive charging ecosystem.

  1. Tata Motors is the first brand to drive past 2,50,000 EV sales in India
  2. Its portfolio spans six electric models across all mass-market segments
  3. Tata’s charging network includes over 2 lakh charging points

Tata’s electric portfolio

Six EVs cover entry to premium segments

Tata’s turnaround in the EV space can be attributed to the quick and direct adaptation of its ICE models into EVs – apart from the Altroz and Safari, all ICE-powered Tata models have an electric counterpart. The company’s EV range starts with the Tiago.ev hatchback, which is priced from Rs 8 lakh. Tata also serves fleet buyers with the Tigor.ev's Xpres-T version, while the Punch.ev bookends the compact segment. The Curvv.ev and Harrier.ev, catering to more premium buyers, complete the line-up.

Tata Motors crosses 2.5 lakh EV sales milestone

Notably, Tata Motors manufactures its EVs with over 50 percent locally sourced content, including localised power electronics and thermal management systems. The company claims that over 26 percent of its EV customers are first-time car buyers, while 84 percent use their electric vehicle as their primary car.

Tata Nexon EV sales

Nexon EV comprises 40 percent of Tata’s EV sales

The Nexon EV’s cumulative sales crossed 1 lakh units in about six years, with the 50,000 milestone coming in June 2023. This accelerated pace of adoption can be attributed to the mid-lifecycle facelift that Tata rolled out for the Nexon in September 2023, bringing in major technical and equipment upgrades. The Nexon EV is currently priced between Rs 12.49 lakh and Rs 17.49 lakh, ex-showroom.

Charging ecosystem

Tata’s charging network includes over two lakh charging points

This uptake in EVs has been supported by Tata’s widespread charging network. The company claims it has over 2 lakh charging points across the country, including home charging, community charging and public charging points. These also include 100 MegaCharger hubs across key highway corridors, offering up to 120kW charging speeds with 16 charging points per hub. Tata says it aims to increase public charging points up to 30,000 by the end of 2027 and up to 1 lakh by the end of the decade through its Tata.ev Open Collaboration framework.
