Toyota’s next-generation Fortuner has been spotted testing in Thailand, signalling that development of the new model is well underway. The heavily camouflaged test mule suggests a full generational update rather than a mid-life refresh.
The sighting follows Toyota’s unveiling of the ninth-generation Hilux in late 2025, indicating that updates to the brand’s ladder-frame SUV and pick-up line-up are progressing in tandem. The current Fortuner has been on sale for nearly a decade, with multiple updates over the years, making a generational change long overdue.

Split headlamp layout and boxier rear profile spotted
The test mule is fully camouflaged, but its proportions point to a familiar Fortuner silhouette with noticeable changes. The SUV appears to have a more upright stance, with a flatter bonnet and a wider front end.
At the front, the new Fortuner is expected to take cues from the latest Hilux. Slim LED daytime running lamps (DRLs) are positioned high on the fascia, while the main headlamp units sit lower, creating a split-headlamp layout in line with Toyota’s newer global design language. The grille appears noticeably larger, paired with a redesigned bumper and integrated fog lamps placed lower down.
The rear remains largely concealed, but the outline suggests a more squared-off profile than the current model. Revised bumper contours are visible, and the tailgate design appears new. While the final tail-lamp detailing is hidden, the shape hints at slimmer, wraparound units, possibly linked by a light bar.
Overall, the next-generation Fortuner looks set to retain its rugged, upright character, while adopting sharper surfacing and more modern design elements inspired by Toyota’s latest ladder-frame models.

Interior details are not visible in the current spy images, but the next-generation Fortuner is likely to receive a major cabin update. Borrowing cues from the new Hilux, the SUV is expected to get a fully digital driver’s display and a larger 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
Spy shots do, however, reveal an ADAS radar module integrated into the lower bumper, along with cameras mounted behind the windscreen. This confirms the addition of Toyota Safety Sense, marking a clear step forward in active safety for the Fortuner, an area where the current model has been seen as lagging behind newer rivals.
Expected feature upgrades include dual 12.3-inch displays, Level 2 ADAS, a 360-degree camera, wireless charging, ventilated and powered front seats and a sunroof, depending on variant and market. Improved connectivity features and over-the-air update capability are also expected, addressing long-standing criticism around the current Fortuner’s dated cabin and limited technology.

Familiar petrol and diesel engines likely to continue
For India and most global markets, the next-generation Fortuner is expected to carry over the familiar 2.7-litre petrol and 2.8-litre diesel engine options, with the latter expected to continue with Toyota’s 48V mild-hybrid system, already introduced in our market on the Fortuner Neo Drive.
Both engines are likely to be available with a choice of a 6-speed manual and a torque-converter automatic transmission. Four-wheel drive will continue to be offered on select variants.
While Toyota is exploring electrified versions of its ladder-frame models for some global markets, the India-spec Fortuner is expected to remain focused on internal combustion engines with mild-hybrid assistance.
