Tata Motors has added a petrol engine option for the Harrier, which, until now, was only available with a diesel engine. The Tata Harrier turbo-petrol range is priced from Rs 12.89 lakh to Rs 24.69 lakh, ex-showroom. Developed in-house by the homegrown carmaker, this direct-injection motor debuted on the 2025 Tata Sierra. The same has also been introduced in the Tata Safari flagship SUV.

  2. Fearless Ultra top trim and its Red Dark edition are available with Harrier petrol only

Tata Harrier petrol engine and gearbox options

1.5L 4-cyl unit with 6MT/6AT

Tata Harrier petrol engine

The 1.5-litre 4-cylinder turbo-petrol engine produces 170hp and 280Nm in the Harrier, 10hp and 25Nm more than the Sierra, to account for its heavier weight. Transmission duties are handled by a 6-speed manual or an Aisin-sourced 6-speed torque-converter automatic transmission (AT), sending drive to the front wheels only. For reference, the Harrier diesel has a 2-litre 4-cylinder unit with outputs of 170hp and 350Nm, paired with either a 6MT or 6AT.

Tata Harrier petrol features

New camera washers, bigger 14.53-inch touchscreen

Save for a new Crimson Nitro colour, there are no exterior design changes to distinguish the petrol SUV. Washers for both the front and rear cameras have been added, along with a memory function for the outside rearview mirrors (ORVMs), which now tilt down automatically when the reverse gear is engaged.

Tata Harrier petrol interior

Inside, the petrol Harrier gets a lighter colour scheme and faux wood with silver pinstriping on the dashboard. A Harrier EV-like 14.53-inch QLED touchscreen and Dolby Atmos are also available. Wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, and other goodies are still on offer.

Safety

On the safety front, 7 airbags, a Level 2+ ADAS suite, ABS with EBD, a tyre-pressure monitoring system and disc brakes for all four wheels are on offer. Availability of some features will differ by the Harrier variant.

Tata Harrier petrol rivals

MG Hector

With the new petrol engine, the 5-seat Tata Harrier is now better positioned against the MG Hector, which has offered both petrol and diesel options since its launch in 2019; prices for the diesel line-up of the facelifted MG SUV will be announced this year.

Compass petrol could be on the cards

The Jeep Compass, currently available only with the 170hp diesel engine, did come with a petrol engine earlier, but it was dropped in 2023 after the BS6 Phase II norms kicked in. Since then, Jeep hasn’t found it financially viable to bring in a petrol motor for its limited sales volumes in India. What’s interesting is that Stellantis (parent to Jeep) is now considering Tata’s new TGDI engine for the Compass. If that goes through, the partnership would give Jeep a ready, modern petrol engine from a carmaker it already has a long-standing relationship with.
